Shotguns

The Shotgun is always legal, even at L+ Gun Control.

Presumably, this is because shotguns are used for things like hunting and protecting oneself from grizzlies attempting to chew one's face off.

However... at L+ Animal Rights, hunting is illegal and one is encouraged to negotiate with the grizzlies. (Perhaps they'll settle for just an ear?)

I think that Shotguns should be illegal at L+ Gun Control and Animal Rights. This would mean that it is possible to play in an environment where no firearms at all are available (and easy to do because the cosmetics lab is a good target for the LCS's shenanigans). It would add some difficulty to the game as laws become more Liberal.

Hm, real gun control/bans shouldn't have shotgun-sized loopholes. After all, shotguns have really big bores so they must be really bad and ban-worthy guns.  :o

Are there any real life countries that ban shotguns?  Generally they get exempted due to their heavy use in hunting and lack of concealability.  I agree that an L+ nation would ban them though.

Come to think of it, sawn-off shotguns could be a good addition to the game.

Yeah but this is America, and even in extremely bleeding heart liberal states, rifles and shotguns are still allowed. Something might be different in this game for a L+ thing, but I'm not sure about the banning of them too. Maybe limit everyone to a one shot weapon or something weird.

Well, many L+ ideas will never be a reality even in extremely liberal states. For example:

Recreational drugs are regulated and taxed.
Rich people are virtually unheard of, due to taxation.
All law enforcement positions are subject to election and recall.
Corporations are subject to intense regulation, and there is a maximum wage law.
Animals are people, too.

These are unlikely to ever happen in the US; heroin will probably always be illegal, there will probably always be some rich people, and I don't think the cops would agree to becoming elected officials.

So I think we are okay with unrealistically extreme L+ positions like making shotguns illegal. Part of the humor of the LCS is that they go way too far in the Liberal direction, while using often outright hypocritical methods. Outlawing shotguns and hunting while giving man-eating grizzlies equal status with humans sounds like something that'd be right up their alley.

The sawed-off shotgun could be added easily. Just have a shotgun that's easier to conceal and less accurate--voila, sawed-off shotgun.

I XML'd a sawed-off into the game, but I probably made it too powerful.

The UK isn't an Elite Liberal country, though. More liberal than the US, but I don't think there's a country on the planet that goes to the ludicrous extremes that the LCS is trying to advocate. (Unfortunately, the Conservative Nightmare is a reality in some places, but that's a different story.) Some things happen in some countries, like the wage/tax/labor in Communist countries, or drugs being legal in some places, but overall there isn't any place that is actually fully Elite Liberal by LCS standards, simply because such a country would implode under the totally unrealistic laws and structure that would require. (IRL I am a political moderate and tend to be focused on what works best--extreme positions tend to be simply impractical, unsustainable.)

Remember here, we're not trying to simulate the real world. LCS is more like a political cartoon than a photograph--a world in which Obama's ears really ARE as big as his head.

Well, gun laws around here are pretty much as L+ as you can get without moving to the PRC or the DPRK, and shotguns are treated like any other firearm - you can have one after you prove firearms expertise, need (no, self-defense doesn't count) and reliability. Oh, and you're subject to unannounced, unfounded, warrantless visits from "the government" to check if you're storing the thing the prescribed gun safe. And they make you pay for those visits, too.

One country I know of banned (as in "total ban") pump-action shotguns because, um, probably because only bad people use them. You can still get a semi-automatic shotguns though (with the magazine capacity limited to 3). Talk about not making sense...

Heh. Muzzle loaders only. After all, that was what was available when the second amendment was coined.  ;D

Here in MA you can just have those without any sorts of licenses I think just because of the historical matters.

I like the idea of keeping shotguns legal at L+ because then I'd like to see the LCS rationalize why shotugns aren't really guns.

I agree with Callista. A true L+ country wouldn't have legal shotguns. Hell, it probably would have legal restrictions on the knives/axes/maces etc in the game too.

For a real life example: In Russia, gun control is taken quite seriously. Even cold weapons are quite tightly controlled (certain types of knives are illegal to produce), while owning even non-lethal weapons requires a permit.

And Americans consider axe murderers a matter of jokes ... Russians don't.  :o
