Space Empires V MP - Interest Check
« on: June 17, 2013, 04:48:33 pm »

So... I've recently started to play SEV again, and the given the AI, I've been wondering if there's interest for a multiplayer game. We could do it PBEM (well, or Play By Dropbox but that doesn't make a nice acronym. :P) or try to set a time for the game. And unless someone objects, I'd say we can use the Balance Mod 1.19i.

Opinions?

I'd be interested, but I do not have a big enough screen to windowed mode my way away from the bloody annoying random flicker effect, so I haven't even finished the game I'd started yet.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Hmmm, any preferences for game settings?

Small quadrant, big quadrant? Research speed? Starting tech? Racial points?

There's no real need for extra racial points in my opinion - you don't need deeply religious and advanced storage techniques and advanced power conservation all on the same race. If everybody gets lots of points, they'll wind up buying some very similar stuff I'll bet. Few points means hard choices - do I want advanced storage techniques or crystallurgy?

If we play with starting tech points, it's gotta be medium or nothing. Medium is a bit too much in my opinion, but it allows starting empires to be diversified somewhat - somebody who starts out with mines will play differently from someone who dumped all his points into getting another colonization tech. But there's the problem, who do you think has the advantage, the guy with the mines and advanced weapons, or the guy with twice as many planets to colonize? Or how about the guy who got as many levels of applied research as he could?

So I'm going with low racial/no tech points. Don't care about quadrant size.

I'm in!

Also, Balance Mod or vanilla?  To me, the biggest benefit of Balance is fewer number of tech levels and less time spent refitting ships who are 3 levels behind.

i agree with low racial, and i'll back boksi for medium/no tech, preference none.

I feel like a medium sized quadrant would give the best variation in strategies (rush/turtle), but I'm not really too sure. Also, what about neutral civs? I believe those are the ones that stay in their starting quadrants, and what sight rules?

Quadrant size depends entirely on number of players.

Neutral civs can be fun, I'd support a few.

Well, about medium/no tech and quadrant size, I'd say the main question is what kind of game we want. A no tech/bigger quadrant allows for a slower, more strategic and diplomatic game, while a med tech/smaller quadrant gives a shorter game with less chances of dying.

What's wrong with PBDB? I like it.
However seeing as how this game isn't TBSE, won't it take both For and Ever to play? Last game of PBEM I was in (EoFS, not SEV) took 2 months to get 14 turns in (and that was the relatively fast early game). Then died, making all that wait basically for nothing.

You can speed progress up quite a bit by limiting the game to only Americans/Europeans/Other Continent, which will likely allow you to hit more than one turn a day. Without that, you can order players by timezone to ensure that gameplay is as smooth as possible.

Also, I'm seeing a bit of weirdness with regard to pop growth in this game - it seems like population is being auto-transferred from my homeworld to my colonies, without ships or anything. I'm in turn ~3.4 and I have a colony at over 300m, starting from 8m, with a yearly of ~13%. Is this normal/expected? I'm used to having to move pop myself.

There's fleets of civilian ships that go unlisted, shuttles and cargo haulers, that ensure resources get shared to the empire treasury, and population moves around.

I'd suggest we region-lock the game, but we'll likely have enough players for multiple tables, one for US, another for Europe.

I may eventually play with you guys, but my last taste of SEV was bitter. (I started at SE3)
