Got a DS and game today and the controls are throwing me off. Who the fuck tough to put the thumb stick above the d-pad?

You can re-arrange the bottom screen layout, I put a virtual D-pad on the right side for easier access to the camera. Even then, while back on the psp my friends used "the claw" method to control the camera, I simply learned to quickly fiddle with the camera whenever I had an opening, for example while I'm dodging or attacking since I can't really move during that time anyways.

The controls are kind of clumsy, but don't let that discourage you, stick with it and you'll find a great game.

My first instinct is to use the claw method on the thumb stick. It awkward and uncomfortable.

Use the monster camera and make the digital d-pad bigger. Works for me.

The claw doesn't really work with the 3ds since the the thumbstick and D-Pad are reversed compared to the psp. At least I find it doesn't work for me, you need pretty accurate control of the thumbstick if you want to attack accurately.

If you're willing to pay 15-30$, I highly recommend the Circle Pad Pro, especially for Monster Hunter. Here's my current setup for MH3U.

SirAaron, I have to ask, do you have similar charts for Lances and Switch Axes?

Unfortunately, I don't have any charts. However, there are lists of attacks for lances and switch axes that tell the percentage of raw damage that each hit does. Press Menu, and then click Damage.

Incidentally, that site is also a great resource on weapon paths, drop rates, and quest reward percentages. It's pretty sweet.

Wow, that is all AMAZING!
And I had no idea that Lonkswords actually did such lowish damage...
I FEEL DIRTY.

Longswords have the highest sharpness. There is also Demon mode for that extra kick.

Try hunting with bows for that low damage.

Actually, longswords have the spirit gauge. Demon mode is for twin swords. [/nitpick]

I think using the spirit gauge is called demon mode. You could also keep it as passive sharpness boost. Can't remember the exact details, I mainly use switch axe and gun lance.

Nah, DS is demon mode, maxed out demon mode meter is archdemon mode, longsword meter is the spirit gauge.

And yeah, longswords are perfectly serviceable, but quickly become an enormous nuisance in multiplayer if you don't know how to handle them.

Seconding the Circle Pad Pro. Except that I have the Circle Pad Pro on my 3DS almost all the time. It makes the 3DS a bit bulky, though, but way more comfortable, especially since I have long fingers. I do not regret the Circle Pad Pro purchase in the least. I only wish that I could have an option to use the extra circle pad however I want and to allow the extra shoulder buttons to work like the normal shoulder buttons.

Longswords do low damage? :(

They were far and away the best weapons in Tri, because with red gauge they had damage comparable to a GS L1 charge or something, except hitting much, much faster.

I guess it's good that they're not so overpowered, but damn, I enjoyed facerolling fights with level-equivalent equipment.

Well, not really LOW, just, lower than I expected. They still do respectable damage. And I forgot to take into account the spirit gauge.
Hell, they did enough damage to take down the Ceadeus in the time limit, :P
