Since MH4 is out now (in Japan) I'm really curious about one thing in particular.

Have they added the option to use the circle pad pro to mimic the classic controls where you attack with the right stick?

The lack of my preferred control options has been the main thing keeping me off handheld MH thus far. Though I'll probably break down and get this one regardless once it's out in NA, thanks to the online play.

When you start the game there is the option to enable the extra stick if you have it, so it is supported... though I do not know whether you can use it for attacking.  Haven't played earlier versions either, but MH4 has big-monster locking so it is kinda-easy to point towards when attacking, without the second stick.  Kinda.  I still wave my weapon around in thin air 50% of the time though.   :'(

Not sure if its a good idea to post this now, since there's been a month since last post..
I just got the game today for WII U.
Does the game support friend listing or something?

I believe so. Unfortunately, I think most of us have the 3DS version, which can only go online by connecting with a Wii U, so we'll probably never be able to play like in the old Tri days.

I'm having a Wii-u shipped right now, at which point I'll be playing Monster Hunter. I'm up for playing with anyone willing to downgrade armors and weapons to newbie stuff and wants progress with me again. It should be here by the 14th, at least that's what Amazon says. It hasn't progressed past the preparing to ship yet, probably because I've been watching it like a hawk.

I'll see what I can do on the Wii U front, but I almost definitely won't get one before that new Smash Bros game comes out. Sorry!

(I would totally downgrade armor, but I've upgraded most of my weapons and don't want to remake them. Unless I started pulling lances or other stuff I don't normally use; that'd be interesting.)

I'm still playing too. I'm in the latter half of HR7 right now. Some of my friends are HR8 already.

I've been playing the crap out of this since I got it for Christmas, and I have a question.
Do charged great sword attacks actually do any more damage?
Like, I did some testing on a High Rank Rhenoplos, and an Uncharged Overhead Swing and a Side Swing will kill one.
However, even with a Fully Charged (And not overcharged) Overhead Swing, I still needed a Side Swing to kill one.

Yes, they do much more damage. Small monsters probably work differently.

Holy jesus that's a lot of damage there.
Alright, maybe it was just the small monsters working differently. Thanks for the graph.

Any time. I'm a big fan and total addict. Nearing 600 hours and 38/44 awards, and got the piercings earlier today.

All I'm missing is the rare commodities (curse you Moga Woods), blacksmith hammer (10 maxed weapons of each kind, got at least one of each and finished the armor long ago), the million resource points (suppose the commodities will take care of that), the million HR points (only 6 ranks away), and the gold crowns for large and small monsters (there is no way out but death).

Yeah, total addict...

Well, I probably should play this more. Got to the Brachydios before getting stuck, because holy crap he's hard to kill. I mean, goddamn... enraged, you can't even dodge. And I use a switchaxe, which at least gives me some maneuverability... Sadly, it's never enough. Any tips?

I don't have any tips for evading him, really. I just know that he's weakest to water element and secondarily weak to ice. I'm mainly a SnS user with a preference for mostly evasion+ sets, so if I remember rightly, I fought him using the Barioth SnS for its decent stats and a set of Volvidon armor. Dunno if it's the best set, but I did manage to beat him. Not sure if it's really applicable to a switchaxe user, though. They're much less mobile than a SnS.

I believe I used the... speartuna greatsword because it was water element, had okay sharpness, and decent raw (wtf was i thinking?!). Volvidon (S or upgraded normal) armor is great; Attack and Evasion are useful for everyone, and Tremor Res is a nice bonus for monsters that can tremor. Remember to roll towards him rather than away (he'll leap or swing over you), run like hell (not roll because it's not fast enough) if he uses the horn explosion, and stay on the offensive as much as possible. The heavy guarding weapons are no good IMO because he moves too fast, does good amounts of damage through the shield, and because slime only gets off you if you roll, not backhop, forcing you to waste time sheathing or risk getting blown to bits. As I was learning, I used to just run away and hang out until he calmed down, but that wastes time and doesn't help improve much.

What equipment are you using? I really ought to practice more in the lower ranks so I can give better advice.

You can avoid him when he's enraged by sheathing and just staying at a decent distance. Only real danger if you keep some distance is the jump and you can run just fast enough to avoid it. Makes it a longer fight but far safer. I beat him in Rathian armour with insectiripper dual swords (dragon damage) though it took me ~45 mins, of which I ran out of potions at the 20 minute mark, so a lot of time was spent desperately staying alive, so it's definitely possible to dodge his hits once you get used to them (I had to!). He also seems to slow down (I think) as you deal damage, so if you can rough out the start and get some damage in it starts getting easier, by the end I was able to start getting hits in during his rages fairly well but at the start they just wrecked me.

When he isn't enraged (or when he slows down) keep behind him as much as possible and wail away, I found tail swings were rather rare. I found it to be a rediculously fun fight once he stopped wiping the floor with me (about the time I ran out of pots).
