I'm good on Zinogre; in fact, I think that was probably the best run I've ever had. <15 minutes, 1 mega potion used, and it didn't feel like a struggle. And I think Zinogre's one of the faster monsters, since it's more difficult to roll through things like a Duramboros or an Uragaan than Zinogre.

And I'll probably get laughed out of town for this, but I use the SNS because I like it more. Imagine that. :P

I wouldn't laugh. I mainly use SnS, too. It's a good weapon. Much better than many people give it credit for, but you have to grind for weapons of multiple elements, though.

As far as I know, I've been the most vocal proponent of anti-SnS behaviour in this and the MH3 thread(which was used for MH3U and stuff for a while, iirc)... but that was based on MH3, while Ultimate apparently has somewhat radically re-balanced the damage formulae, so it could well be a perfectly viable weapon in comparison to the top players like Lance and GS which, as far as I'm aware(which is not very far) are still much the same as they were, which is to say very, very good.

While we're on SnS chat, do note that affinity boosts are great on SnS (and lower raw weapons in general, I think 3U added a like, crit multiplier for certain weapons? So like greatswords only get a small boost but SnS get a big one? I dunno the specifics, it may have been around before this), and wherever possible you should go for affinity rather then attack up.

Question regarding bowguns, light ones in particular.
I'm not very far into the high-rank quests, so I'm eyeballing the Alloy S armor. I'm close to making the Hunter's Rifle, so I'm wondering about the viability of a Pellet S focused build.
What barrel would you guys recommend using with a setup like that? Silencer or Long Barrel?

I haven't heard of a crit multiplier, but faster attacks does mean you get more chances to proc a critical hit. So when a GS or hammer is doing a slower attack with a 10% chance of a critical hit, a faster weapon could do more hits in the same time each with a 10% chance. Something like that, anyway.

If the gun you want to use has Some/Low recoil (Hunter's Rifle doesn't), it won't have a delay on Pellet 2 and 3, so go Long Barrel. If not, go Silencer. Another good, slightly-harder-to-get armor is Ingot S, which also has Pellet Up but also has Recoil -1 so you won't need a silencer on any gun for it.

As for the other question, Pellet is good alone. Just don't shoot your friends with it, because it does some pretty annoying stunning animations on fellow hunters.

None so far, though you can play Freedom Unite. You could also play Portable 3rd if you can get your hands on it.

MFKSSAGLKJALS
Jhen Mhoran, how do?
I mean, I just can't do enough damage to kill him before he kills the dragon ship. I manage to use all the cannon and ballista ammo on both parts of the fight, while beating down on him pretty hardcore when I could on the first, and he just doesn't die.

Any tips? The set-up I was using was the Jaggi S armor, and an Inceadeus Switch Axe.
Should I go for a heavy bowgun and just pelt him with that instead of using a melee weapon?

Bombs, Bombs and Bomb+'s! Also, attack his weakpoints for massive damage and use the dragon bomb. Use the dragonator and at least hit him twice, one each part.

I consulted the subreddit and it ends up it was critical eye that improves depending on your weapon, not affinity itself! So it has the same end result, but was still wrong.

There are some pretty similar games out there, like Toukiden (the demo at least) or Soul Sacrifice, though the amount of similarity could vary depending on who you ask.

Jhen Mohran is always a struggle for everyone the first few times. But after you learn what to do, it's pretty easy. Here's a quick dumb walkthrough written from memory.
Spoiler: What Usually Happens (click to show/hide)
The bottom line is: do not let him hit the ship. Use the ballista binder and gong as you need to. In the second stage, the dragonator deals very very good damage and also interrupts his attacks, but has a 10 minute cooldown. Use it as much as you can.

As for your equipment, your armor is okay, but Inceadeus isn't the strongest it can be. Remember that you don't actually have to beat Jhen Mohran to advance, so you can keep working through village quests and eventually get better stuff. In this case, you could upgrade Inceadeus to Great Inceadeus if you basically beat the rest of the village quests to get stronger weapons from stronger monsters, or you could use different weapons. Jhen's weaknesses are ice and dragon in equal amounts, though having a dragon weapon in only High rank is not likely.

Funny thing is, I used to keep killing Jhen back in P3rd without the ballista binder and sometimes killing him without the dragonator. It's just not satisfying shooting him dead with the ballista.

Gathering armors that increase gather speed and amounts is a good choice for maximum ballista and cannon damage. Using powerful combo weapons like dual sword's demon mode combo and long sword's spirit combo on it's back weak points. Also bombs, never enough bombs.
