It makes me sad that there's not much talk here.

Anyways, what LBG has rapid normal shots? As much as I like the pellets, I miss pure power of Rapid Normal shots.

On one hand YAAAAAAAAAAAAY On the other hand, 2015?! Such a long wait T_T

Finally! So excited for this. I have a 3DS, not a Wii U, so maybe I can finally play online! Maybe! I just wish I didn't have to wait so long...

I've played a bunch of this recently. I finally completed my Goldbeard blademaster set, which is the armor set I've wanted since before I started the game. That was a fun milestone.

I also started switchaxing. It's radically different from dual blades but I still love it. It's also my first real experience of being able to cut tails while the monster isn't knocked down.

Here's the LBG page on a great MH3U site. Any shot with a gray background has rapid fire.

Huh, there's not a single bowgun with rapid fire Normal 3 shots. For Normal 2, I'd build toward Blossomayhem (Gold Rath+Silver Rath) or God's Archipelago (Ancientshard), which has wonderful access to the various explosive shots.

Makes me sad too. Some LBGs with rapid normal are Rathian, Rathalos, Lagiacrus, Zinogre, Nargacuga, Barioth, and the Ancientshard guns. At least, those are all the ones I could find in my box.

Yup, learning new weapons is good fun. It's my goal to be proficient in all of them. Right now I'm working on Gunlance, but I don't think I'm really getting it. How are you supposed to stick to enemies and keep poking them when you walk super slow and only have that rushing upward stab as an advancing attack? Sheathing takes a while too so I can't do it GS-style.

get hype everybody

There are some sweet MH4 teasers and other videos on the subreddit. They seem interesting, but I haven't found time to watch any yet.

As for what I've been doing, I've been helping out 2 friends. Just helped them out on their urgent quest to HR3, the Rathian/Rathalos one. I think it's always good to step back, dust off my Arzuros set, and pick up a weak weapon.

I can confirm, lance/gunlance is a "wait for them/cautious approach" sorta thing, chasing dudes is mostly gonna get you smacked around.

I guess it all depends on play style. I play Lance very aggressively due to the counter attack, and only block when strictly necessary.

To be fair I've only played gunlance and just assumed lance played similarly! :P

Although yeah, there's probably some wiggle room.

My use of gunlance is more gun than lance. I either go for shelling or the full burst combo then wyvern fire when it's knocked down or sleeping.

I play lances myself and defensive-do-nothing and offensive-kill-shit-instantly both have their own places in the game.
IMO, the defense is there purely for when a really tough enemy is rage mode and want's to beat your ass hard. Not really necessary to do on the low rank quests, or the lower high rank quests.
All the other times, you should be playing offensive as hell chaining together side-steps and back steps with your combos to avoid getting hit and keeping your combo rolling, while counter-lancing as much as possible in place of normal blocking. (You can block a High Rank Raging Barroth with counterlance while still probably hitting a leg or it's tail with the counter. And it just looks cool.)

Thanks for the tips, everyone! I really don't think the shield weapons should be mainly used to block because that's time and stamina (and maybe HP) you could be using to murder the monster. I've at least been able to get around lance, but I just don't have gunlance down. Even Wroggis are a struggle for me. I've heard the gun part of the gunlance also isn't as strong later on due to its fixed damage in relation to buffed G-rank HP (at least they ignore defenses), but opinions seem to be out on that one. What I DO know is shelling is cool as hell.

Anyway, I've come back to ask a question about skills, specifically for Sword and Shield. I've been trying to use Athena's Armor Set Searcher, a great tool to help find mixed sets with skills you want using your charms, to come up with an armor set (well obviously it's right in the name of the program) for general SNS use. Here are the 3 skills I'm trying to nail down:
  • Sharpness +1 because it's essential to pretty much every weapon. Of course there are exceptions, but it's virtually always a good idea to include Sharpness +1.
  • Evasion +1 because I feel like it'll be a great help to avoiding attacks with my admittedly meager experience, and I feel like Evasion +2 isn't worth it.
  • Speed Sharpening because as you may know, sharpness drains super fast on SNS and other quick weapons, and I want to minimize time sharpening. I'd have gone for Razor Sharp, but that's difficult to get with Sharpness +1 because the two skills, Sharpness and Handicraft, cancel each other on their decorations. It'd be a real chore to get both, excluding use of Yamato Prime.

This would be fine, except with only these 3 skills, ASS (hehehe) gives a huge variety of possible sets which are a chore to wade through. Ideally, I'd also want to stick on another skill to narrow it down and make it easier for me to choose. Currently, I'm thinking of:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I know the various element/status boosts are good on SNS because of its high values and fast attacks, but I'm super lazy and want to avoid making multiple sets for the various elements. I also don't want to use all my Alatreon junk on Escadora X for blademasters because IMO Escadora X for gunners is much better. I know, that's entirely my fault, I'm a bad person, etc.

So the bottom line is: any other skill recommendations? If not, any suggestions on which skill to add? Thanks in advance for any advice and for reading this giant post.

Evasion is pretty optional if you can dodge right. It gives you a moment of invulnerability. It's more harm than good if you rely on it for too long. Evade Extender is overall better so you can roll further out.

Guard is especially useful if you're shield reliant.

If you have giant balls of steel, go for Adrenalin and keep HP below 40%.

Unfortunately, I don't fall under any of those. I'm not good enough to roll through with MoI without evasion +1, I rarely use the shield, and I lack giant balls of steel. I just decided to go Evade Extender. It's working out fairly well against Zinogre so far.

If you have the spare monies, bring some demondrugs and armorskins. Or if you have pale extract to spare, go for the mega versions. Use traps if you want to end the fight as soon as they limp.

Also drop the Evasion and learn to dodge properly, the sooner the better. If you're having trouble with Zinogre, you'll have trouble with the faster monsters.

If you rarely use shield, why SnS? Unless you want the ability to use items without sheathing your weapon. Dual blades is the better option in pure damage.

I have used SnS in 3U but I did in FU and the choice between SnS and DS is the option of having an 'oh shit' button that you can fall on when you don't have time to dodge a monster. Of course, in FU everything had the capacity to one-shot you so my opinion could be a bit skewed. With a SnS you also have the option to block a roar so instead of being stunned for a few seconds, you can pound on the monster while it's actively vocalizing it's hate towards you.
