Reminds me - wasn't 4 or 4U or something confirmed Q1 2015? Could've sworn there was rumour or statement to that effect, but I don't remember which it is or what date.

No concrete date yet, but according to Ryozo Tsujimoto, the producer of the MH series, it's coming early 2015. Here's the source video.

So in MH4 you get Guild Cards from other players via Streetpass.  Mostly this is not so interesting, though the posed shots can be cool.  Mostly people are hunter rank 0 (myself on a new char 10 hours in, but I play slow) to 10.  People who play a lot can be 100-300.  Today I passed some dude who is Hunter Rank 999... take a stab at how many hours are on record.

The game was released last.. August?  So we're looking at a student who manages to play in every class without getting busted, or someone without a job but the financial means to play MH professionally.  Anyone here that nuts?

Wow, damn, that's impressive. I only have 780-something hours, and it's been a full year. HR160, and I haven't seen anyone higher than me even though I went to the Capcom community hunting event in San Mateo back in late June (though I was only 7 back then).

Heh, at the beginning of the game it talks about getting into "Hunter Life".  Now I'm beginning to understand.  Gotta say this game has a really good game-loop, pleasant downtime, easy exploring missions, light combat missions, then bam, epic battle.  Just downed a Tetsukabura IIRC with no recovery meds left and a smidgen of health.  Great feeling.

edit - how'd you even get 780 hours in a year?  Play a couple of hours every day?

Tetsukabura is the tusk frog, right? Yeah, that feeling is the best.

And it's more like super intense sessions interspersed with periods of inactivity.

Heeey everyone MH4G trailer

Looks like Monoblos and Diablos are back, with some new subspecies for Garara Ajara (snake), Zaboazagiru (shark), and Kechawacha (lemur thing). There might have been subspecies for Generu/Aruserutasu (the bug pair) and Tetsukabura, but I wasn't looking very hard. There's also some tactical upswing action and what's probably going to be the new flagship monster. It attacks a Rathian and appears to be standard flying wyvern body type.

Radical.

And yet for some weird reason the thing from that trailer I got the most excited about was the Cephalos coming back XD

Personally I wouldn't even touch Rath Heart because Rath Soul is much nicer. Also, what exactly is Uragaan doing to you? Volvidon's Tremor Res should let you get in a bunch of free hits whenever it does the super chin slam.

This is really late and kind of a necro but you should totally sleep bomb him.
Anywho, as I actually tracked this thread down to ask:
Thinking of doing stuff with a fire hammer.
Should I go for the Gun Hammer or the Peco Hammers?
Pink Rathian armor or normal Rathian armor?
Should I just not even do this?

Also, any tips for playing Hammer? Is my best bet for success just getting used to the short range? Should I focus on charge attacks?

I bought this game on the 3DS hoping to play with people.
Afterwards I learned that the 3DS version doesn't support online play because herpa derp lol screw you.
Then I hear Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will have online multiplayer on the 3ds, so hooray.
Then I learn that there's a new version of the 3DS coming out that's going to have much better framerates than the one I just bought can handle.
*Sigh*

This is the first Monster Hunter game I've ever played, and I've enjoyed it quite a bit so far. I just completed the Zinogre urgent quest for the village, so I'm getting close to the end of high rank village quests I think.

Get the Peco hammer, but then go up the Rathalos line. (assuming high rank) It'll have more raw, more blue sharpness, and more fire than the gun hammer at similar rank, and the Peco hammer doesn't even have a high rank version, skipping straight from low/early high rank power to G.
I can't even remember what those armors give but IIRC Pink is probably slightly better, so out of just those two, Pink.
No. Do it. :P

Move in with R attacks (not the spin though). The full X-X-X does more damage than a super pound (the one after holding R for 2 flashes where you do a tiny side hit and then a smash down) so do XXX-R-XXX-R-repeat when things aren't moving.

The head is usually the weakest spot but also the most dangerous. Just because you have a hammer and can do fancy KO stuff doesn't mean that you're only allowed to hit their faces. Go for the feet or wherever you like.

Fear not. Maybe you can just sell/trade the old one? It certainly won't be essential, and I hear that 4/4G have much better FPS than 3U does even with 3D draining away processing power.

You can disable 3D/Anti-aliasing in the main menu options.

Yeah, I know. MH4 didn't have that option but still ran fast.
