Dorfs in Glass Houses...
« on: June 16, 2013, 10:11:15 am »

I saw in a picture somewhere that someone had built an above-ground apartment complex using green glass, and this made me think, can you build on top of constructions, when they are made of glass (like floors)?

Yes. The only limitation is that you cannot build where there is already a pre-existing construction, so you cannot build on the same tile as a constructed wall, floor, ramp or track.

I have built traps on constructed floor tiles.

Something to remember though, you can build constructs on top of walls, that is one z-level above them on the 'floor', but not on actual constructed floors. So make sure you have a floor plan unless you want every floor looking exactly the same as the one below it.

I prefer working with glass. In fact I most commonly do strictly overground embarks with no digging allowed. Glass is really versatile and easy to work. Not being able to build on top of constructed floors isn't a problem because you can deconstruct and rebuild really easily. In fact the key to building outside corners is pretty much having temporary floors for scaffolding. That said, you shouldn't need to build build outside corners unless you build the higher floors larger than the below ones, which will be the case for example if you are making an upside down green glass pyramid...

I like making apartments above ground with glass windows all around the buildings. Usually this is made of blocks with clear glass windows, but it would be neat for the structure itself to be green glass blocks. By the time you've made enough blocks for a couple of apartment buildings, your glassworkers should be good enough to make some really spiffy windows. Trade away all the non-masterwork windows to ensure that all your dwarves are super happy about their houses.

The only downside is that glass block production can grind to a halt rather abruptly once your workforce runs out of either empty bags or full bags. If your sand-collectors fill all your available bags before one of your glassmakers empties one, they all stop working. On the other hand, if your glassmakers empty all the sand bags before more can be filled, they cease working too, so it becomes a massive balancing act.

Personally I find it worth the trouble to construct my own above-ground Emerald City for no true materials cost.

For that reason I have the same dorfs collecting sand as are making the blocks. Set both tasks on repeat in the same workshop and you'll never have problems. Works best when the sand source is close by. The other option is to disable notification of job cancellations and use a manager.

Here is a nifty trick that I do, I find this incredibly helpful with a lot of projects.

dfhack is an awesome tool anyone that plays dwarf fortress should use it.

Make sure you have a farm for rope reed and have brew turned off on the z kitchen screen (pigtail's will work as well but don't grow all year round)

enter the following commands into dfhack

Code: [Select]
workflow enable
workflow count THREAD [enter # here]
workflow count CLOTH [enter # here]
workflow count BOX [enter # here]

-Set your farmer's workshop to process plants on repeat
-Set your loom to weave plant cloth on repeat
-Set your klothier to make bags on repeat

You should be contentiously making empty bags for use. (Workflow will stop once it reaches the number you designated and start again if the items are put to different use... for example lets say I entered 'workflow count BOX 10' the the klothier workshop will stop once it detects 10 empty bags but start making them again once you start filling some with sand)

Code: [Select]
workflow count POWDER_MISC/SAND [enter # here]
workflow count BLOCKS//GLASS_GREEN [enter # here]

Set some regular glass furnaces near your sand collection site and have them set to collect sand on repeat

Have your main glass furnaces (these ones I have powered by magma) to make blocks on repeat (It will stop making them once it reaches your set number of blocks)

I am no dwarf fortress pro, so if there are mistakes or things that work better and simpler it is because I'm a total newb. But as far as I can tell, if it is simple it is not dwarf fortress.

*edit* "contentiously"? Where did that come from?  I meant continuously. But I guess one may be contentious if they so desire.

One thing that's very helpful with making lots of glass stuff is a DFHack plugin called Workflow. With it, you can set your dwarves to always keep, for example, 10 spare bags of sand, and 20 glass blocks, available at all times.

Workflow stuff
Most of that isn't even needed. If you have DFHack, rename the dfhack.init-example file into dfhack.init. this will allow you to press alt-w on a workshop with a repeating job selected, and it will bring up a GUI where you can set limits.

That's a lovely dwarven apartment complex!  Is that surrounded by water?

On five sides, yes. The top isn't finished, but it will be fully submerged eventually.
