Do haulers respect burrows?
« on: June 16, 2013, 03:21:29 am »

If I have a farm in a burrow growing pigtails, and I have a stockpile that accepts pigtails inside that burrow. Outside of the burrow there is another stockpile that accepts pigtails. If a pigtail grows, will they always take it to the one inside the burrow, and if full just leave it on the plot? or will they sometimes take them to the outside stockpile?

they can't bring it outside the burrow, so either let it rot or bring it inside the burrow. My money is that they bring it to the stockpile inside the burrow. If it's the closest stockpile, it's what they'd do in any case

so in that case what happens if there is no stockpile for pigtails inside the burrow? Will it just be left to rot?
is the only way to get resources out of a burrow via another stockpile that perhaps has an explicit take order?

I'm just trying to see how I can set up some management. I want to make an area growing pigtails, attached to an outer courtyard for ropeweed and then make sure those particular plants are kept inside the burrow for processing to thread for the clothing industry only. I want to make sure no one uses those pigtails and ropeweed for brewing/cooking. I'll have another farm setup for kitchen food that will make a few pigtails for brewing for variety.

You can define overlapping burrows, so there can be one to control where the farmers are allowed to go, and another to control where the haulers are allowed to haul the products to.

I was just going to say "change there options in the foods screen so they cant be brewed or cooked" but...
Well, you can do that for the ropereed but the pigtails... Dunno. have a stockpile for them where part of it can be accessed by the brewers while the rest is for the spinners?

Ropereed can be brewed as well. Essentially I want to create more isolated contained production chains. Farms just for clothes.
A seperate farm closer to the kitchen area just for food/drink
At some point I have some kind of vision of a very efficient layout. Until now I have this central staircase that goes down and everything just builds off that..but in reality, I'd like something a little different.. Something that might seem a little more contained. For example each area would have bedrooms for the main workers living and working in those burrows, and I might even create multiple dining halls or something just to see how that works out.

Perhaps just have them walled off with some network of minecarts under? and above of course...

actually, I forgot something. If the farm and the stockpile are in a burrow it will indeed limit where the crops are brought - By dwarfs assigned to the burrow. Other dwarfs are perfectly capable of walking into the burrow, pick a plant and bring it somewhere else if "all dwarfs harvest" is enabled or if farmers are not all assigned to the burrow

Ah. then, the hauling job of the farm can bypass the burrow? If there isn't a dwarf in the burrow to take the job, or he doesn't get the job, then an outside dwarf might come in and take it somewhere else?

So there isn't anyway to explicitly keep materials inside a burrow without walling it in?

If you setup the burrows in such a way that only dwarves assigned to that farm/stockpile burrow can reach it then they will always take it to that stockpile.  However if there is even 1 dwarf floating around that is not assigned to a burrow you could potentialy have him get the hauling job and he could take it on a fortress tour.

while you can do what you want with burrows it not only takes a fair bit to setup but you need to keep micromanaging it as new dwarves arrive.   if you want to isolate production chains your far better off just physicaly isolating them, seting up a small self suffecent community.   Either ship stuff in and out through dump zones or minecarts going over drops so theres no path for the dwarves or just make sure the dwarves inside can subsist and just dump finished product out to be picked up by your other dwarves.

Quick and dirty carve out some nice rooms, a dining room with lots of fancy statues and chairs, setup a 3x3 plump helmet farm and a still, give em a few barrles to store booze in, and just burrow in the needed farmers/haulers/threshers for whatever your production line is and put a locked door between them and the rest of the fort.  they wont like living off helmets and wine only but the furnature should keep em happy enough to not spiral.   Either drop shaft out the finished product or just open the door once a year to let haulers move it out of there and new clothing to arrive(if not produced on site).
