Hardcore Hitman: You are never given the option to take guns at the start of a mission and are almost incapable of handling firearms. All guards know to look out for your trademark suit and bald head, even when you're not in a restricted area. Level layout is semi-randomised while still maintaining puzzle aspects.
Implying that Hitman isn't (or can't be) already fairly hardcore :P

Hardcore Call of Duty: Play the original on Veteran difficulty. Where's your regenerating health and God now?

I'm not a big fan of enforced hardcoreness, except for certain titles. I'd rather games have options for players of all skill levels, though obviously there are some limits to how much this can be done.

Before I finally exhausted Hitman: Blood Money, I used to do runs through the levels where I pretended my avatar wasn't actually a highly-skilled and trained assassin. I'd show up to the level without any guns, and refuse to use the fibrewire or mines. I also wouldn't trigger the contacts (such as the coatcheck in the opera mission). Really made things tense on Professional. Some of those guys are hard to kill stealthily without silenced pistols or being able to drop stuff on them. Ridiculously easy targets, like the senator's son in the Christmas mission, also get a lot tougher.

How do you do anything without fibrewire or mines? Punch people to death?

Poison syringes? Those and the sedative versions are some of my favorite tools.

BEJEWELED EXTREME

In a world where life has no meaning, you must match 3 gems in a row according to shape and color! The colors are practically identical and the shapes are degraded from eons of jewel-slavery. You have to do enough of this before the fires of hell reach your soul on the sidescreen, causing permanent visual distortions in the game area, until you start a brand new game from the very very beginning.

After each level there is a cutscene. Most of the time, people die in the cutscenes. It depends on if you get enough "soul jewels" during the previous level. Soul jewels are identical to regular jewels, but slightly browner. "Enough" usually means 200 or so. Sometimes it doesn't even matter.

Play through and see if you can get the best of 29 possible endings!

Casual Asteroids:

- Your ship doesn't need to turn and accelerate separately. You move in the direction that you point your control stick/use WASD.
- You have a mouse cursor/right control stick for shooting wherever you want.
- Your bullets are replaced by a continuously firing laser.
- Asteroids do not kill you in a single hit. You must be hit several times before you die.
- Your health regenerates. Fast.

No syringes, either. The idea is that you have a personal vendetta against the mission targets, and you just kinda show up after your 9-5 business job.

Ha. No. Asteroids gets real hard real fast. Thing is, there's really no way to "win". The game ends when you run out of lives. But if you've played it, you would know that driving your little ship and counteracting your momentum while trying to shoot all those rocks is really anything but easy.

Something can be difficult and casual. There's no real investment into playing asteroids. You just start playing, and if you lose you lose. You don't really lose much by dying, apart from the chance at a higher score. Whereas I would put Dwarf Fortress closer to hardcore because you put in a lot of time and thought into building your fortress, and then if you lose the fortress you lose all that work. With asteroids the stakes are pretty much nothing. You lose, you lose. No real big deal. Unless you're really obsessed with high-scores.

Hardcore DCSS: knowledge bots don't exist.

(It's funny because DCSS isn't exactly a casual game, see?)

Casual anything: pay to win

(Also ironic because few people consider throwing gobs of money at something as a "casual" level of interest.)
