A little Laggy?
« on: October 29, 2007, 10:12:00 pm »

I have the new version, but I cant even enjoy the most simple things.
I have the default local area size and every frame is STILL very laggy.
Any way to reduce the 3 seconds per frame would help greatly.

Hrm, my PC is mid-range and I can handle large area's. It's only slightly slower than the last version of DF, but that'll probably change once I start getting more dwarves.

You might want to try turning temperature off, I seem to recall people saying that this provided a significant framerate boost in the previous version.

If you've got an area with a volcano that might shoot your framerate to hell...

My framerate is much much faster than the old DF (though dwarves seem to move around faster outside than they do indoors?).

That is until i dug myself out a 'waterfall' from the cave river and flooded a portion of my map. Now its very slow.

I'm using the default size start area (5x5 or so of the selector tiles, about 1/9 of the maximum area) and getting 10-20FPS at all times.  The old version runs for me at 100FPS all the time, so I suspect something might be funny.

I don't think there's any moving water anywhere (unless it's way high or low Z-wise and started out that way), so I don't know what might be slowing it down.

Runs very fine in wilderness, but in mountain I get around 30 FPS(and no, I didn't dig up or down, I just dig entry to the mountain)(But may be that that there was ARMY of troglodytes and ratman).

I have some slight lag at times, but nothing serious. And that was with an increased starting area. The default size works fine.

I get major lag (FPS goes from ~80 to ~15) for the same reason a lot of other people are:  More unknown/sky grids on-screen = more overhead.  The lag is bad enough in the mining areas that I have to be careful how I press keys (even when paused) because the game will sometimes issue commands more than once.

Knowing I'm not the only one having this problem makes me considerably less angry at my computer for having it. =)

Oh, the mouse seems to work when you're designating squares, if it gets very bad. It's slow, but you can always tap the right square.

Playing on an almost 100% flat forest map, my FPS plunges from 100 at ground level and one above to 20 in other areas. It's really strange. If I'm at that ground level though, DF runs much faster than it used to, which is wonderful.

I didn't have FPS turned on last night, so I can't really say (I'll try it out tonight)... but it took me eight hours to get my late-autumn immigrants.  That works out to about an hour a month, and I wasn't pausing THAT much.

Well, I thought I had some slowdown, but when I turned on FPs, it was even worse than what I really thought
I launched an old release with a fortress with more than 120 dwarves and still had 30fps (which is fine)
but with this new release, I have never more than 5 FPS!
it's really not playable this way.. I mean, I have to wait 2 minutes for a dwar to go to point A to point B when it should be 10sec max... damn :/

My zone isn't even big since it's the one by default :/
