New Noble "Counselor"
« on: June 15, 2013, 10:36:46 am »

When appointed collects info in the Status screen similar to DFHack's removebadthoughts --dry-run which effectively lists as a whole what the total thoughts are so we know what is pissing everyone off.

A secondary effect could also be that non-bezerk failed dwarves could be rehabilitated over time via the Counselor with the hospital handling the crazies (Or a new zone similar to a hospital 'Sanitarium' )

I'm not sure... a counselor type figure seems kind of advanced for the 1400s. That and insane dwarves really should stay crazy. Permanent repercussions for the player's actions are a necessity. I like the idea of a designated asylum-like zone though.

A more refined mayor system could provide better in-game management of sad dwarves, since that is where they go when they have problems.

Maybe we could bring back the the philosopher to handle the sad dwarves. A local peasant who lost his child recently would seek their wisdom on the subject, and receive a corresponding happy/unhappy thought from the conversation depending on their personality.

In 872, Ahmad ibn Tulun built a mental hospital. Even early scholars documented Egypt in the the BC area had camps\prisons for the disturbed. It might be out of place for 1400BC, but even Romans had islands they exiled the insane to.

They've been doing it since the 9th century.

I think there was actually a suggestion like this about 3 years ago that covered both of your two suggestion threads and also included a sub-suggestion for a Dwarven masseuse who would provide massage therapy to the Dwarves.

A spiked log rolled  across the back. Hell for us, possible heaven for Dwarves.

Massage therapy may be all your tantruming Dwarves need. Imagine mining, building, chopping trees, fighting - day in, day out. No amount of partying/sleeping/chilling out is going to loosen up all that tension.

I can only imagine that dwarf massage therapy would include magma and hammer strokes to the cranium.

The Dwarven equivalent of hot wax therapy. The horror. Also, when they talk about "hot rock" massages, they mean bauxite.

Perhaps there would be various Dwarven massage techniques called stuff like "magma flow", "hammer strike", "miner's pick", "glassmaker's bane" and so forth.

They can call them "Inquisitors", walking around evaluating and imprisoning miserable/tantruming dwarves in their dungeon.

An inquisitor wouldn't be a bad idea, although I'd maybe see them used more as a sort of evil outpost liason sent to dissenting baronies/provinces by the Mountainhomes to make sure everything is alright (i.e. murder your baron).

Wouldn't mind this kind of role being used for dwarven priests, when religion comes in. At the very least attending religious ceremonies should probably help traditionalist and devout dwarves with their stress.

That's not really rehabilitation though, it is more like "lets stick all of the crazies over here so they don't kill us". Hence an asylum system would be more appropriate than a rehabilitation system.

Probably should be something like a counselor/psychiatrist/philosopher noble who would handle dwarves who have just seen family members die or  have a pet die or lose a limb etc.

On deeper thought, the problem is that medieval allegories for mental illness (possession, lycanthropy) exist on a literal level in the DF universe. A mental stress counselor doesn't really fit a universe where 'lunacy' is associate with actual lunar transformation. A revamped 'dungeon master' who ushers wrong-minded (or cursed) dwarves into his gaol/dungeon on the other hand works much better.

I'd be happy just as long as we didn't have to leave our insane Dwarves to die. A dungeon master could keep and feed berserk Dwarves.
