world gen forgot about the goblins?

Hi, I'm quite new to DF but have played a few games and know the basics. And I'm sorry for my poor english, it's not my native language...

I wanted to mod out the aquifers and followed the instructions in the wiki. To test it I created a new world (not advanced - minimum in size and history (year 6), everything else on standard) - I didn't wanted to play that map, just to check if the aquifers are out before I create a time-consuming large world.

Well, I found a nice starting spot with a volcano, loads of metals and ... no goblins. The other races are present and I didn't checked other locations on the map since I was too surprised and started playing, but my starting area is quite central on the map - not on an island - so I guess there were no goblins created? Is this possible due to the small size of the world? Do I have to expect them to be created later? I know that races can die out when playing with a long history but I guess that's not the case here?

They might just not be where you are. Civs only attack/trade with sites within a certain range, so if you're far away from any goblin civs then they aren't going to bother you.

Check legends and see if you can find any goblin civilizations.

On small maps, you can end up with missing civilisations. I had 'pocket' world with dwarfs and elves as the only sentient species, no goblins, no kobolds, no humans.
You can check for nearby civilisations while looking for an embark location - [tab] a few times until 'neighbours' are displayed. AFAIK this displays all 'settlement' entities that can actually reach you - civilisations and necromancer towers. If e.g. goblins aren't displayed there, they are either completely absent or cannot reach you. Since the overall world is static once the game has started, a civilisation without access won't be able to get to you, ever.
If a goblin site exists but is quite far away, it can take a while until they notice you and start harassing your fort, but rarely more than three years.

Okay thank you,
I have checked this via the neighbours-tab and goblins weren't listed there. Is it possible to enter legends mode after the game has started? I can only load the savegame or create a new world...

Theres a method. Go to the folder where all the saves are. Then duplicate the save where there are no goblins by copy-pasting. Then load the new save and abandon the fortress and start legends.

according to the civilizations menu there are two kobold and two goblin groups - however if I start a new game and check the map and the neighbors tab goblins are isolated on one small island near north pole - that's why I don't have them in as neighbours.

so - can they swim?

As long as you dont embark on the island, the goblins have no way of reaching you.

only thing that can reach you over lakes or oceans is your dwarven caravan.
