Welcome to Shakecloistered, the succession fortress. Our job here will be to build a fortress to last at least 10 years. If you would like a shot at it, then post a comment! I'll put your story in a spoiler, but make sure that you put a link to your world after you finish your one-year turn. Now that that's out of the way, let's get started!

YEAR 1 (bsnott)Spring
We finally arrived after the long trek from the mountainhomes. My dorfin' head is burnin' after that desert walk! Anyway, I ordered some of the colonists to chop down some trees and pick some bushes as the navigators told me I should do. Their tips have gotten me this far, at least.
I decided that we should dig out the entrance to our outpost in the tiny valley area you can see on the left.
I knocked into some water in the side of the wall, creating mud for plump helmet farming. A little more than expected came out, but it's no big deal. I also arranged for a stockpile area, and the wagon to be taken apart. I then set a pasture for the animals (which are at the moment three dogs, a buffalo, and a donkey) to graze at. Next, I had the miners dig out the second layer, where I will put the stockpiles, sleeping wing, offices, and the workshops.
It wasn't really fun to keep telling the miners to go back and mine the damp stone that they're so afraid of. Luckily, I noticed that on the second floor the ground is fertile enough for underground farming. The area to the north on the second floor will be the stockpile/farm area.
I noticed that our dwarves are sleeping in the mud, or on the cavern floors of the fortress. I designated some beds to be built, and then designated a refuse stockpile away from the entrance.
Today I designated two large plump helmet farms to be made. Each has a food stockpile and a still near it.
To start the month of Felsite I have designated the dwarves to build us a trade depot near the gate.
Beds started getting put in the rooms, and dwarves started getting their own personal beds! They will probably like that much better than sleeping in mud or on a rock floor.
I end spring with a sleeping quarters for every dwarf, plenty of food and beer production, and with workshops and stockpiles set up! Summer
I let the first month of summer go by without any interruption, aside from getting trees chopped down and berries picked, and just let the dwarves get used to their new home for the time being.
I start the second month of summer by telling my miners to dig down a little bit, and we almost immediately strike ore. We have found tetrahedrite, which will give us copper! We also get a good bit of stone, which will be useful to build rock pots with. I also designated a large area on the third level to be dug out, which will serve as out blacksmithing area. We currently do not have a blacksmith, so I will wait until we get some migrants, to turn one of them into one.
I designated the miners to dig out an area on the first level, which will later serve as a barracks. (Heads up, future players!)
I also have the miners dig out a large room, mainly for stone storage (and gathering).
Yay, new minions! Sadly it was only three. Two farmers and a child. At least we get one new farmer, as I turned the other one into our temporary blacksmith and wood burner!
We got a wood furnace, a couple of smelters, and our forge set up today. I had our new "blacksmith" go and make charcoal so that we can smelt that tetrahedrite into copper.
One of the tetrahedrite ores had silver in it, that should come in handy for trading. The first metal object that I had the blacksmith make was a copper pick, and then an axe after that. Always nice to have some extra tools, just in case. And that was the end of summer, here is the situation at the end of it!
Autumn
I start autumn by extending the sleeping wing to support our 3 migrants. I also queue up some tables and thrones to be made, and have them placed in the dining room on the first floor, creating our chow hall!
Next, I have a bridge placed at the entrance (which I had to remove and replace because it retracted the wrong way) at the entrance, and had mechanisms queued up for it.
Today I had some more berries picked and trees chopped. I also had the dwarves dig further on the stone gathering layer.
More migrants arrived. Another small wave, four dwarves. I guess people really like the mountainhomes. We got a peasant, a weaver, a fishery worker, and a child. I set them to be full time farmers, with no hauling labors. We really need bigger migration waves. Autumn comes to an end with a trade caravan arriving, but I haven't traded with them yet.
Winter
Okay, this is my second time typing this out. I started the season by trading with the caravan. The merchant was shady, trying to get a big profit, but I sent him away with small profits. Next, I tried to build my outside farm. While I was starting construction of the walls, a gang of giant lengurs came out of nowhere and killed a peasant, then left. I now have a burrow set indoors, and the passageway to the stairs is now blocked off.
The rest of winter was pretty much uneventful, but we really need more manpower. We can't even fight the kobold thieves that come in every now and then. It's ridiculous. Anyway, one of our axes got stolen, so I made another extra, along with a sword. If we ever get a migration wave with a good amount of people, we need to get a military set up. I was in the middle of expanding the sleeping wing when spring rolled back around, so the next person will have to finish that up.
Here's the save! - http://www.mediafire.com/download/v3nz4btktpfibvq/region2.zip YEAR 2 (Mouseshy)SpringI have been enlisted to assist in overseeing the young settlement of Shakecloistered. The journey here from the Mountainhomes was uneventful, rather bland even, and I am eager to get to work.
To determine how to proceed I examine the forts inventory records. Only to find there aren't any! I find the workers estimates to be dubious, at best, so I appoint an idle peasant to keep stock and help manage the other dwarves work.
While surveying the surrounding area, I find the mutilated remains of a fellow dwarf.
Apparently he had a fatal encounter with some sort of oversized monkey.
Burial arrangements were made. I should see about recruiting some guards to protect against any more rampaging wildlife.
Part way through spring a large wave of migrants arrived at our gates, 39 to be exact. Half of them were young children. I'm trying to run a fortress here, not a grade school! At least we'll have plenty of fodder for the milita.
We need to build a bigger dining room and/or daycare.
In the last part of spring I dug out and fortified a small area outside fort entrance. Primarily to facilitate expanding and diversifying our farming operations. One can only drink so much plump helmet wine.
Warning. Images are a bit big. Sorry about that. I'll make sure to resize them next time.
Worked on organizing the stockpiles and improving residents living quarters. I hope to get a new dining room and additional bedrooms dug out and furnished during the summer.
[/size]
Summer
In early summer a wave of new migrants arrived. Eight adults, no children.
The new dining room has been finished. Bedrooms have been dug out and are awaiting furnishings. Additional quarters have been designated to be dug out on the next level.
One of the forts stray canines has earned a name for her prowess in fighting off thieving goblins.
A child was taken by a mood. He claimed a craftsdwarf workshop and starts working furiously with piglet bones, tetrahedrite, and copper. Upon completion he presented a sceptor worth 10800.
I've recruited and mostly outfitted five dwarves for our first squad. They have yet to start training, however. A mayor has also been elected. He is rather unhappy about his living arrangements, or lack there-of.
So ends summer. I didn't get quite as much done as I wanted. Hopefully autumn will be more productive. Autumn
[Nothing particularly exciting happened in autumn. Been working mostly on getting bedrooms made.
We breached the cavern while while digging deeper looking for different ore. We're right over a large chunk of water. I plan to start digging a well shaft down near the soon-to-be hospital.
I set up a barracks to start training our soldiers. I put in orders for armor and weapons to outfit an additional squad. Contruction of quarters for the mayor and military commander are also underway.
A new wave of migrants arrived. Six adults and one child.
Merchants came to trade goods with us. At first they claimed they could not reach our depot. They seemed manage just fine though. The depot needs to be moved from the main hallway though, as it was causing some major traffic jams while the merchants were there. I didn't get around to it though.
I traded our rock and bone crafts for meat and fish, as we were subsisting only on plants for food at that point. I also traded for some crates of cloth and leather. I requested cats(as we have none), turkey hens, steel/iron bars, and a few other things for the next caravan.
Here is the export agreement:
I finished up the well as winter started. It's in its own room, and I have stationed a couple war dogs there in case something tries to sneak in that way.
Winter
Winter was uneventful too. Finished up furnishing quarters for both the mayor and military commander. They still aren't quite satisfied with the quality, but it'll have to do.
The worker bedrooms that I previously dug out have been fully furnished. More are still needed to fully provide for our population.
Hospital has been finished as well.
A roof and an area for archers to safely shoot from has been started above the farming area and main gate. It will not be complete by the end of the year.
Just as the season came to a close a drafted another squad of five to start training. The first squad has been making decent progress.

YEAR 3 (BlackOctoberFox)Spring
As I trudge across the lush green fields I come across Shakecloistered. I must admit I am a little fearful as the first thing I see is a wall that looks like it's been knocked down, over a pit. Peering into the pit though, I breathe a sigh of relief seeing farmers hard at work. They look up, smile and wave. I smile and wave back, knowing whatever pleasantries I receive are going to dwindle rapidly when they hear that I'm going to be the overseer for the next year.
I make my way over the bridge, pushing my way past the 2, 3, 5, by Armok how many guard dogs do we need? Sheesh.
I walk down towards the store room, gather the crossbow I requested. Grimacing at the smell as I approach what appears to be a trade depot. Looking about for the source I am somewhat disgusted by the prescence of a wooden, dwarven sized coffin. I swore then and there to prepare a proper burial site.
There are those who call me the Black October Fox, a ranger by trade. And today, at the start of Year 135 I begin my duties.
Spring.
Let me just clarify something. I may be a ranger, but that just means I know how to point a crossbow. I don't care for military. Running drills, being under some big wigs boots. I don't care for it, never learned how it worked. If I see it a threat, I'll leave it to them to kill it.
The first thing I notice is that the place is built out of clay. Clay?! That's hardly a dwaven material. No, no, no. If I'm going to do this. I'm doing this in style. First things first. I'm building a Great Hall. A grand meeting place for all of us to meet, eat, drink and be merry.
Remembering the coffin before, I decide the northern part of the hall shall lead to the graveyards for animals and dwarves. The south side shall be where the dormitories will be. To be fair to my predecessor he's outfitted all the rooms well, but what will happen when we get an influx of migrants? Chaos that's what, I don't want people fighting over something so simple as a bed.
Today I learned that one of the miners has a pet peacock. I couldn't help but laugh at that.
Suddenly one of the dwarves comes barrelling towards me, telling me he's seen a great one eyed beast, a cyclops heading straight for us. I tell the military and of they go... dragging me with them.
We slayed the beast. Apparently it was a female cyclops, odd, didn't know that they had genders.
There is a lot of blood near the entrance, can we get a maid in here guys? Seriously.
A war dog of note: Lethariicati, along with 4 other dogs died fighting the ogre. I have already commisioned a slab to be erected in her honour.
That night we partied, celebrating the defeat of the ogre and mourning our lost hounds.
One of my friends informs me that one of our fishery workers, has locked herself in the mechanic's workshop and refuses to let anyone in. I can respect her need for privacy but we need that workshop. Hopefully she wont take too long.
She comes running up to me showing me this mechanism she's made. I thank her for her contributions to the fort. Imagine my surprise when the broker told me it could be worth as much as 14400*!
I keep getting me messages telling me how many masterpieces Dumed has made.
After the next wave of migrants, we have 89 people present.
I set up a mason workshop in the great hall and started carting stone in there. Let's see if this Dumed guy can build some nice statues for us.
We've so many rock crafts now we're practically swimming in them, I've requested a trader at the depot to order a wagon from the dwarves.
Summer
I decided to visit the war dog's memorial. I adopted her son in her memory.
We've started putting tables and chairs in the Great Hall so we can have an upscale dining area.
Apparently we're out of wood from making the beds, so I decided to level a forest.
The new mayor making mandates is irritating the hell out of everyone. Next thing he says is he wants an office. I gave him one, right in between the boneyards. Should serve as a warning as to what happens if he messes up.
I commissioned a memorial to the Cyclops we killed. To serve as a warning about how dangerous this world can be. The new Hammer Lord Ushir gave me his approval, so I felt like it was a good call.
We appear to have a lot of idlers, I decided that rather than do nothing they can smooth down the stone in the Great Hall, you know, spruce the place up a bit?
Another migrant waves and a few births later and we have over 100 dwarves.
Autumn
The year has gone by pretty quickly and quietly, my term is almost up and so far I'm happy with the progress I've made. Nothing's blown up yet either so that's a plus.
I dug some exploratory tunnels looking for minerals, a few gems, some hematite not a bad haul to grab.
The fortress is pretty self-sustainable now, food and drink are increasing slowly and we have industry in wood, stone and metal so I feel pretty good for the next guy.
The big military men told me that they've improved one of their rank to Axe Lord and promoted a "Catten Berthesis" to Captain.
A report just came in, a minotaur lumbering over the mountain. The military dispatched and killed the creature, this time, no one was injured.
The minotaur, interestingly enough was also female. Can someone commission my tombstone to say "Chick Magnet?"
The woods are running out, fortunately Fungi wood has started growing all over the base. If we ever lock up we should have enough to keep the furnaces burning for a while.
I read an unusual report recently apparently during a digging expedition one of our miners gave birth. Okay then.
Winter
Winter has passed by pretty slowly and uneventful. Hmm what's that?
A what... and it breathes...what?!
Scrap that last note a Fire breathing, flying titan has just arrived...
Military our prayers are with you...
Post Battle.
Shortly I shall be passing over control to the next overseer and I wish them the best of luck. They will need it. The titan ignited the lush green I fell in love with, turning it into a giant field of ash. The woodcutters were caught in the forest fires, the military were also affected. Those trying to retrieve the dead woodcutters died of horrendous burns, as distraught as they were, they couldn't wait for the fires to die down to retrieve the bodies.
Amongst the dead lies Dumed, the master stoneworker whose masterpieces decorate the very hall which caused his death.
Their children weeped throwing tantrums, eventually becoming insane. They started wrecking the dining room. Some became reclusive hiding in their rooms. Sparking a cataclysmic tantrum spiral, that if not put in check could very well mean the fortress' doom. Myself? I survived, though some nights I wished I hadn't. I can't leave this place, not until I fix the problems my avarice has caused. My great hall is cursed, my beautiful hall. How did it come to this? To the next to travel across the ashen plains I beseech thee. Help us! Help us please!
As I write this, I learn that the successor to myself is nicknamed "The Child of Armok." Has the failings of my reign been preordained, I can only quake in fear as to what this hellspawn shall do, though if he can do any more damage, I'd be surprised.

I've just arrived at the fortress of Shakecloistered, where my king has sent me to live. More like die horrifically. Anyways, as I'm coming in, I notice that there is, in fact, quite a bit of blood splattered on the ground. One of the dwarves tells me it's from a hill titan. Rubbish, I say! Titans are just myths! They... They ARE, aren't they?
I looked around at what we had and I was appalled to see that we had no bookkeeper and no manager! This had to be filled AT ONCE! I've chosen a bowyer that had fairly little to do named 'Mosus Olengeb'. So far, this hasn't actually been that bad. Wait, the miners are doing WHAT? Well, evidently the miners are digging out a long, wide passage leading to nothing at all! I suppose I may as well let them get on with it, since there is not a whole lot that I need them to do right now, and they will begin to grow more experienced.
*Sigh* I've had some bad experience with nobles before, but mere minutes after I walk inside, they all start demanding that I give them better rooms! The mayor even has the beard to make DEMANDS this early!
You know, I thought the entrance actually looked quite nice. Then I looked behind the main gates. The land is turned to ash, only the occasional tree stands, and I think I see the charred remains of more than a few creatures.
Well, great. One of the kids just started foaming at the mouth, shrieking, and attacking dwarves. As much as I hate to do it, I think I may need to call in the militia.
It is done. The child is dead.
These owlmen are getting very annoying. I'm somewhat tempted to try and set up a squad of marksdwarves, if I could understand their rather suicidal tendency to run at the enemy rather than shoot.
GAH! Giant Gray Languors have invaded, and one made of with Kithaldumur! I've sent the military in full force to take them out! THOSE FILTHY MONKEYS WILL PAY!
Phew... They're all dead. In the mean while, I dug around the flooded caverns, and told the miners to start digging for the great Magma Sea. May Armok bless us with His Holy Fire!
The other two layers of cavern have been found, and in the third, a magma pool was present. I may begin plans soon for magma furnaces.
Ah, the Slate air has begun to descend. Spring is truly in its peak!
AHA! While walking through a layer of the caverns, one of the miners has found the magma sea proper! And he's not on fire, to boot!
Hmph! The goblins thought they could sneak in and steal from us! Of course, the war dogs took them down quickly.
Some miners have found some almost-melted rock. In the surrounding areas, we've begun strip mining, to see if we cannot find the legendary blue metal.
I have great news! We've found it! It's in the Great Magma sea, so it will be tricky to get it out, however.
Okay, I'm fairly certain that the Admantine is only partially within the GMS. I've begun mining on the side that is not submerged in magma. Soon, very soon, we shall have the single greatest metal.
We've begun extracting the admantine very, very carefully. Should a single miner dig even a Urist too far, then all four miners, their picks, and the admantine will be up in flames. The miners, the picks, they can be replaced. But the admantine? Damage the tiniest piece, and I will have your beard.
This is a sad day. A miner has been trapped by an unforeseen accident.
While mining, he accidentally uncovered a part of the magma from a lower part. This lead to it springing up. Luckily, it was only one. He is not dead, as the magma is flowing out of itself and then back in repeatedly. Plans have been enacted to try and save him, but the chances look grim.
We were able to rescue him! I've set up a Craftsdwarf workshop and I will soon have a forge ready for a peasant draftee-smith and the one dwarf skilled in strand extraction.
Unfortunately, BlackOctoberFox has been killed by an unknown dwarf. Our prayers are with him.
*Sigh* Migrants. More resource-leeching, complaining, idiotic dwarves. None of the look very useful. There is a pair of masons, a few fisherdwarves, and a Suturer.
Ah, felsite. It has to be one of my favorite months. It still has the crisp, clean aspect of Slate, and it's much warmer as well.
Hm. It would seem that a trader has come to trade with us, but we don't actually have a depot.
A couple of ghosts have risen from the grave. The aren't causing much trouble, but I would like to get them buried ASAP.
Oh great. I've started trying to make some admantine weapons, but guess what? The fortress has NO REFINED COAL! And then, when I went to refine some, I found that the fortress also has nothing to refine into coal! I've ordered the fortress to produce 30 units of coal to compensate.
Lovely. Just lovely. Apparently, I neglected to give orders to make the admantine thread into wafers. Honestly, if I hadn't seen it in action for myself, I'd declare that it's more trouble then it's worth!
Well, I've looked at the crimes that have gone on. Nothing had happened recently except for the mysterious murder of BlackOctoberFox, but I just decided to weave some wild tale about how a giant grasshopper came into the fort and killed him. The nobles ate it up and FINALLY left me alone about something.
And with that, spring has come to the close. Hematite has started.
