There's been some discussion about whether shops are better off in one district, as has been the case in recent releases, or if they should be spread around the city, as has been the case in older versions and in the National LCS test releases. Since I'm pretty familiar with the pros and cons of each, and it has a lot to do with preference, I'm interested in just a straight up poll on preferences.

Feel free to elaborate in comments if you'd like!

I feel like it adds more flavor to have them in separate places, gives more life to each area.

But it's just too damn handy having them all in once place, makes it so much easier to sort through. I want to buy stuff, commercial district, no looking around for the right shop ever.

For flavor and realism, which are things I tend to like, it's great to have shops all over the place.  From a gameplay perspective, I'd rather be able to just come in and get what I want.

EDIT: I've only been playing National LCS since it's been available, but has the Commercial District been removed from the classic single city mode as well?

ANOTHER EDIT: If the Commercial District is brought back, would it keep the name "Commercial District" for each city? Or would the name vary depending on the location?

Create a new "Go Shopping" activity in the "Activate Liberals" menu. Players could select a shop from the menu, wait a day, and proceed as normal. It would be no different than stealing a car in the game. The LCS is already prevented from causing trouble at any of the shops, so I don't think too much would be lost by changing shopping to an activity.

I don't really like that idea, the point of having all the shops in one place is to make it easy to find the place you want stuff from, and go to the place to sell stuff.

I personally prefer the separate places thing, since it also gives more information about what the store is like based on the area.

Just for fun, I went and did a mock-up of what it might look like if shopping were moved to the Activities screen:



What's shown in the screen doesn't actually work, but I think the idea's a workable one, and I'd like to get other people's thoughts as well.

I'd support that over any other option, but with the request that an alternative name be created for the Oubliette - The other shops have very generic names that reflect what they sell, and the Oubliette doesn't fit.

The third option (Activated, not Squad) makes some sense.

BUT

Two points: 1) currently driving to a shop provides Driving skill, IIRC, and if your drivers aren't that great every little bit helps.
2) I've seen the CCS raid shops before, and I'd like to be able to protect them at some point.  Keeping stores as locations seems like it'd help that, somehow.  No idea if it actually would though.

I think if moving shops to an activity, I'd also have them as possible squad destinations.

Those conservative stores are knowingly supplying the likely highly illegal LCS.  Are you sure they aren't a touch liberal?

We could add the ability to "cause trouble" and walk around the shops, but we should certainly retain shopping from a menu.  I don't expect that it would be necessarily productive to risk shutting down the LCS' suppliers, but having the ability to do so in desperate times might add some spice to the game.

I'm not sure I like Capital Fish's idea for making shopping an activity.  I really don't think I like the idea of having it in multiple places, though.  I feel like that's just asking for trouble somewhere.

I kinda think the abilities currently presented with the shops could be expanded.

For example, say, a heavily armed squad (probably with weapons taken from the army base) enters a pawn/gun shop, causes trouble, thus making a point about gun control. As a drawback, the shop will close for a long time, and the squad will lose the ability to buy weapons AND pawn their loot. (Of course, the place would be full of conservatives, probably CCS members, too, and most of them will also be armed).
