You are the king's court: Ch.3 Victory is Sweet
« on: June 14, 2013, 04:24:21 pm »

"The king has been assassinated!" The people cry and news spreads far in this little domain that you call your kingdom. As the remaining courts of the royal families and the bloodlines too young to take the throne, the people of the courts of been called to make decisions. There are many of you, you all bicker amongst yourselves and lands are put up for the line. None seem to be willing to back down. What you all agree on is that action must be quick before enemies attack your lands. Your army is small, you have but one general to lead them and they struggle to maintain order. As the courts settle, you all agree to this thing that some guy once called 'democracy'. A load of rubbish, but it is good for the temporary situation until the king's children one day can take the throne(or all of you decide it'd be best to take control yourselves). You all form the council, you are many, and actions may need to be swift, indecision will not count towards either votes or actions. You all take a breather, relax. You need to remember who you people are...

You are the people of the Kindom of ____(Choices!)
Your flag is the color of _____(Choices!, one color please!)
You are located withing the modern day country of _____ (Choices!, yes a modern day country)

You have the power to change things now, the people they riot, and the men they fear to fight their own kin. What will you do about this? The peasants are unarmed and can be easily attacked, or you could listen to their pleas of freedom. With the king gone, a choice must be made, even if it isn't the obvious ones and ones you decide on your own.

Kingdom of...

You have 1 capital city
You have 3 farming villages
You have 1 mining village

You have 1 general
Your army is demoralized-devastated
Your weapons are supplied
Your manpower is small

Your laws are harsh
Freedoms are non-existent
The people are rioting

With the kingdom rioting from the loss of their king, some seek freedom, others see opportunity and some just feel like looting from the coffers of strangers. With this much turmoil, you all hear word that the people march to the capital's castle. They carry pitchforks, hoes, clubs, daggers and other household goods made into weapons. If Northern Kiwiland's army does not act soon, the people will be looking to cut YOUR heads off. Luckily, the castle is well walled and defended unlike the small wall that goes around the city. Your men ready for a fight, they do not wish to fight. Decisions must be made quickly. Indecision could mean the death of you all.

Their peasant army has no general
Their peasant army is devoted to the cause
Their peasant army is non-supplied
Their manpower is small-medium
They fly a black flag towards your castle.

You have 1 general
Your army is demoralized-devastated
Your weapons are supplied
Your manpower is small

Your laws are harsh
Freedoms are non-existent
The people are rioting violently

Send the general out with the army to meet the peasants at a strategic location.  Inform the army that if they fail, they will die either by our hand or the peasants, but if they live they will each be rewarded with a plot of land (taken from the filthy rebelling peasantry).

a) that sounds like a great way to get the army to rebel, b) if our laws and such are so harsh, I doubt the peasantry have land to confiscate.

Send messengers out to inform the peasantry that following the death of our former king, we have moved to institute a system of democracy, where the people will be much better off. In time, they shall be able to govern themselves, without having to die over it now. They will be able to own land, work for decent wages, etc.

Also point out that should they attack, we are better armed, better led, have superior supplies, a superior position, and roughly equal numbers. To defeat us, it would come down to a siege, since they lack the numbers and equipment to storm the place. Even if they managed to get supplies from somewhere to lay siege long enough to starve us out, the harvests would be missed and many of them and their families would die to famine (assuming it's the right time of year for that).
Plus, whoever assassinated the king would probably just invade, pillage, rape plunder and burn, and generally treat them just as badly as they have been if not worse, and they'd be foreign to boot. They might not even like sheep! *Gasp, horror*

I agree mainly with Harbingerjm, but maybe instituting democracy so early is a bad idea?
Lets just tell them that we will loosen laws, we are better armed, and the people who assassinated the king are still a threat.

The peasantry are at the walls. The army is deployed just in case. They receive the message. A herald reads the message to the people. "The king is dead! The tyrannical rule that the king has caused us will be no more. Laws will be as follows!" The herald speaks of the new laws, they are not quite democratic, but they will make the lives of the people easier. With land now actually purchasable instead of their serf lives. Some will have to remain as such until they can afford otherwise. The people listen, and discussion is among them. Some agree to the terms, others do not, this began infighting, and while some peasants still attempted to get through, they were easily dispatched. This led the rest who felt more needed to be changed to be headed home. Those who were pleased had already done so. For now, the riots have stopped.

With this situation under control at least, business resumes as usual, guards are sent back to their posts and watch over the people, slightly intimidated at this point. You get a map of your surroundings. The kingdom of Drella is to the north. Their blood red flags fly over their city and three villages. To the south there is the free state of Koran, their orange flag flies over their two villages. And next to them is the kingdom of Koran, their green flag flies over their city and one village. You have no information on any of these kingdoms, and at this point it seems they are neutral.

What action should the kingdom take, you could try and improve the people's lives, expand borders, initiate conflict, kill people at random. The army is at your order, the lives of many people at your fate. The city could use work, but it isnt hurting at the moment. What is the will of the court?

It is found out later that the citizens who seemed to lead the others have gone into hiding, but they are apparently pretender to the throne. No name, nor appearance could be found, they hid themselves within the crowds, but out of the rumor, and how some speak, their is one plotting for power among them.

Kill people at random [/joke]

Make alliances with nearby villages, try to obtain another farming village, if possible. Set up beginnings of relations for future trade.

Send emissaries to the surrounding nations to talk to them.
Change the government into a representative democracy-thing with two houses, the first comprised of us and a second comprised of representatives from each town and city, these people are to be voted in, however, each house can veto the others ruling. This veto can be overturned if the first house has 4/5's voting for the law.
Increase some freedoms and loosen some (key word, some) laws. not many, but some.

-1, too modern and sudden. One step at a time; there's a reason there was a Second French Revolution. To quote a certain well-known urchin:
"There was a time we killed a king; we tried to change the world too fast. Now we have got another king, he's no better than the last."

+1, it's one step.
