"Position" in barracks assignment
« on: June 14, 2013, 12:36:43 pm »

I've just made my second squad, and I had them training for a while in my main barracks while I got a cavern outpost built.  Now it's built and I've made it a barracks, added the second squad to it, and removed the squad from my main barracks.  The orders are set on train for both squads.  However, the dwarves of the Fenced Sculptures (my second squad) will not go to the new barracks.

This is a problem in itself, but I feel it's related to something else that's appeared: a "position" option in the settings for the barracks (only when The Fenced Sculptures is the selected squad).  When I select it, I'm given a list of dwarves in the squad, prefaced by P1:, P2:, etc, and I can choose one and only one.  I have no idea what this menu does.  Could someone explain it?

That orders the squad to stand watch either at one place, or to patrol between them.

No, it's for giving orders to specific dwarves. Press p to return to squad selection(it switches between squad and position).

I think you're thinking about points, Japa.

In that case, why do I not have that option for my other squad?

because you didn't press the toggle button to switch between squad and position orders, in the other squad

What is the toggle button?  I don't see one.

Actually it sounds like you found the assignment interface for barracks. This is the way that you assign a bed/box/stand in a barracks to a specific squad member. Just as a check, do you have individual equip and sleep turned off on the main barracks for your second squad? I can't check at the moment, but it makes sense to me that those would control whether the position option is showing up or not.

By the sounds of it, Akura's figured out your problem. When you select the squad from the Squad menu, you should have the option of pressing p to switch between giving orders to specific dwarves and giving an order to the entire squad.

An aside, when presented with the option of giving orders to specific dwarves, you can hold shift and hit their associated letter to select more than one, same as when selecting multiple kill targets from the list or multiple squads to give orders to.

except he's talking about barracks assignments, not orders.

Exactly.  I'm still unsure what it does; no matter who's selected all dwarves use the barracks as normal.

My advice, consider it a success.  I always have militia sleep in their own rooms anyway.

Turns out the method of getting that menu for barracks is basically the same as the squad menu. Once you set a squad to train in the barracks, you can hit P to select positions. As near as I can tell, this allows you to instruct the barracks to allow one and only one member of the squad to train there.
