==THE GAME==This is a game of magical girls, of their trials and tribulations, of their fight against the Youma, of their lives, and their deaths, and all the myriad tragedies in between.
The theme of this game is quite simple: Fight the good fight. Save your family, your city, your world.
Or die trying.
Probably the second one.

Backstory: Gretchen was born to a fairly well-off family. She always had too much free time, a lot of which was spent with her older brother. Dan wasn't a good influence. While Gretchen never got into the kind of trouble her brother did, she does enjoy causing mischief. Despite this, Gretchen is a kind girl when people or certain kinds of animals get involved, and she always tries to stop her mischief before people actually get hurt; these are due to the more gentle influence of her father, a Christian who tries to raise his children to be moral and disciplined, which was more successful with each child. In contrast, her mother was often at work or something, and when at home her standards were high; this, in turn, lead Gretchen to work hard at her studies.
At school, Gretchen mostly stuck to her own group of friends, including a few other girls who enjoyed her general sense of humor. Gretchen was typically the one who kept the group on the less dark side; the others were either more shy or more apathetic. Aside from this group, she hung out with some sort-of nerds; while she didn't initially like them much more than anyone else, she wasn't as good a student as she thought her mom would want her to be, and so studied with them. It was here that she picked up her enjoyment of science fiction and certain select sciences.
Not quite a year before the Contract, Daniel enlisted in the army*; this was an emotional time for Gretchen, due to her close relationship with her brother.
Later, she discovered that er brother had died.
What kind of girl are you?: Mind over matter; Youth and treachery will beat age and skill every time; that kind of stuff.
What convinced you to make a contract?: My brother's death.
What is your wish?: To bring my brother back to life, of course!

Backstory: the youngest daughter (currently 16) of an affluent Russian nouveau-riches family of five children, all of them girls, Lyuda moved into town not two weeks ago. She still doesn't have a solid command of the English language, unfortunately, though her good looks and reasonably decent intentions, not to mention a general impression of pleasantness have allowed her to get by so far. Tomorrow is her first day of school, though - she bets it will get interesting soon enough.
What kind of girl are you?: attractive, foreign, reasonably clever. Also somewhat philosophical and amoral, or at least ethically flexible. A bit sickly and frail, tends to miss schooldays and P.E. regularly as a result.
What convinced you to make a contract?: she's thought about death a lot. Fear of death and death itself stops her from doing and seeing a lot of things. Very fun things. But what if she didn't need to worry about death? Think of all the things she could potentially achieve and the landscapes she could see.
What is your wish?: to become an endlessly reincarnating soul, one that will be born again, memories and psyche fully intact, upon each death. Hey, no need to wish for small things if you can go all the way, eh?

Backstory: She lives with her father, step-mother, and two younger brothers, her mother having died in an accident when she was a child, and various issues that were placed upon her father made life tough for both of them for many years. After barely managing to scrape through the financial and legal problems, her father eventually remarried to a woman who had two young boys of her own, and whom Alyna quickly took a liking to.
What kind of girl are you?: A cunning, far from naive girl who has somewhat darker expectations of the world around her. She's actually pretty out-going, and is far from shy, but she is still reserved and collected around most people, and phrases what she says carefully, and her thoughts are often a mystery to most.
What convinced you to make a contract?: She wants to protect those dear to her.
What is your wish?: To change the past.

==HUMAN CHARACTERS==Clair's parents,
Richard and Barbara Fortune. She has known them her whole life and they are probably the strongest chain to sanity for her once this gets going.
Diane Gounaris, Gretchen's best friend. Diane and Gretchen have known each other and been friends as long as they can remember, and have developed a strong bond over the years.
Alla Vladimirovna Kovalyova, Lyuda's mother. Their relationship is largely defined by relentless mutual mocking and the sharing of snark. Lyuda enjoys pointing out that Alla is largely a trophy wife with very few other good points beside her looks, and a bit of a failure as a mother. Alla in turn likes to remind Lyuda that whatever genes she's got for that sort of thing, Lyuda probably inherited them. Their abrasive relations, though seemingly mean-spirited, rarely take on the character of actual insults, usually keeping themselves to good-natured, humorous ribbing.
Arseny Ivanovich Kovalyov, Lyuda's father. Despite the fact that he is scarcely ever at home, Lyuda likes to think of her father as a respectable figure, a self-made man, somebody to look up to in life, and quite the opposite of her mother. They hardly ever speak, but the girl lives in reverence of the man, in no small part due to her siblings' tales of times well spent and adventures had back in Russia. Lyuda often regrets that the fellow is home as rarely as he is - lately he's been spending up to sixteen hours a day working.
The
Astronomy Club. They meet every Friday night on the school roof and well, watch the night skies. It a small club with only 10 members including Clair. Notable members are the president of the club, Chris Rey and the first person who tried to bully Clair and ate floor, Amy Williams(They(Amy and Clair) get along fine now).
Lyuda's second-eldest sister,
Marina Arsenyeva Kovalyova. Marina, 27 years old and the second eldest child of the family, is a self-proclaimed artist/poet/art critic. What this means is that she's done very little with her life in these last ten or so years, mostly busying herself with the high life, partying a whole lot and supposedly working on her poetry. What she's also been working at for the last ten or so years is getting a job, and neither her mother nor Lyuda have let her hear the end of it. On one hand, Lyuda views her sister as a largely useless layabout. On the other hand, she also rather appreciates bantering with her sister, as the alternative would be to stay at home with only her mother to keep her company.
Mikhail Mikhailovich Lobov, a buddy of Ludya's from back home that she still communicates with through e-mail. He's pretty much the only person she communicates with at this point that is not one of her family members or the serving staff, and they have a good rapport between them, though the letters they write each other are few and far between due to each of them preferring to wait until there's actual news to communicate. He represents a bit of back home to Lyuda, and though she could certainly live without these communiques, she nonetheless appreciates them. And Misha himself is certainly a pleasant enough fellow with an optimistic view on life, so it serves as a nice contrast to her family life most of the time.
Jane Gardener, Gretchen's younger sister. While (as is the way of the world) the younger sibling annoys the older, the two are pretty close, and each appreciates the other more than they're likely to admit...perhaps in part because Gretchen remembers how Daniel was to her.
