how do i get rid of stone?
« on: June 13, 2013, 08:39:20 pm »

Its a newbie question I know, but how do I get rid of these stones in my tunnels? They are annoying and I can't build some things on it.
It is claystone, but it sticks around after I mine through it. The wiki says stones are automatically removed when mining, but they aren't. I cannot smooth it either.
Thanks!

You mean boulders?  Rocks that are produced after you mine?

Eternal issue, alleviated slightly since the 1/4 drop rate.  Dumping still works.

Could we get a screen cap of that? Press [k] and put the cursor over the problem first so we can see what's going on; 'cause I've never seen that kind of behavior before.

Sorry, nevermind.. I set up a couple of huge claystone only Stockpiles and they all came and instantly took it away. It takes some getting used to lol.
edit: that's what dumps are for.. got it

d-b-h and hide them. Unless they are in doorways (stop doors from closing), in stockpiles ( take a spot on the floor for a bin or item) or in the way of a building, they are harmless.

d-b-h will hide them from you seeing them

I tend to keep a craftsdwarf continually making either stone mugs or stone pots.  It keeps the stone supply down to a reasonable level.  Also, the mugs make good trade goods, and every fortress will need a huge number of either barrels or pots for food and drink storage.

Are you legitimately 3 years old?

Also, it may be a basic but he still has to learn it. Maybe you shouldn't be so condescending.

Yeah, I'm used to this forum being a shining example of newbie-friendliness within the dark pits of interwebs. Let's keep it this way.

Designate a garbage dump (press i, make the zone, press g)
Then designate all the stone to be dumped by pressing d, then b and then d and select all the stones.

You should make several garbage dumps since hauling stone takes very long time. I usually set one dump for ~10 tiles. After everything is cleaned, you can reclaim the dumped stone by pressing d-b-c, like mass-dumping.

Fatser option would be stockpiles and wheelbarrows, but it uses more space. By dumping it is possible to fit an infinite amount of stone into one tile, but stockpile can have just one stone per tile. Wheelbarrows hovewer make stockpile-hauling much faster.

Make rock blocks. You can never have too much blocks:

1. Build mason workshop - b-w-m
2. Make blocks in workshop - q -> move cursor to workshop -> a-b-r

By the way, blocks are good because they are much lighter and so speed up constructions.

While the above is true, it only helps to 'get rid' of the stone, if the blocks are actually used for construction - otherwise they reduce the space needed to store them by only 20% at best, because each stone gives four blocks and each bin only holds five. A (little exploiting) workaround would be to not have a stockpile for blocks and let them clutter up the masonry, and just build a new masonry once the clutter starts to bog down the production speed. Then, when something big is to be constructed, a blocks stockpile can be put near the construction site.

^This. I tend to build mason workshops as I mine. The initial stage of a fortress is always messy.
