I placed a lever controlled door in hall and it seems to have NOT stopped water flow ... did I need to smooth the walls?  or install gaskets?

So I waited for winter to freeze the brook and dug around to place a floodgate ... only to find out the brook still flowed when frozen LOL  What a mess fun fun fun

Alright, good to know. I'm asking this because I'm building a complex pressurized above-ground cistern and need six piping channels (well...not really *need* I suppose), and don't want to deal with six floodgates and six levers for letting the miner escape after he punctures a hole if I could just make a door.

What about using an upward staircase behind a corner (to keep pressure out of the stairwell)?

I placed a lever controlled door in hall and it seems to have NOT stopped water flow ... did I need to smooth the walls?  or install gaskets?

If the door was shut, it should be just like a floodgate.  Maybe there was another path for the water, such as over the door?

that wasn't it ... could there have been something washing through the door to keep it from shutting via lever?

Floor Grates (or hatches, I forget what they're called ingame) work exactly like doors, except that you place them in-between Z-levels, kind of like what you're asking for. They're also immune to building destroyers under VERY specific conditions.

In a 1-wide hallway, as long as there's a ceiling on the Z-level directly above, the door should work... If you built the door directly IN an aquifer layer, then what might be happening is that the tiles past the door might be creating water. I'm speculating pretty hardcore, as I can't tell what's going on without more information than "I put a door in and it didn't work."

Maybe.  It would be hard to check, since water has a tendency to make items invisible.

I think dump designations work in invisible items, so mass-designate the area around the door for dumping, then look through your stocks menu and see what items are marked for dumping.

Grates and hatches both exist, but you appear to be talking about hatches.
