Willpower 'n' stuff!
« on: June 12, 2013, 09:50:21 pm »

Aight, so: some time ago some of you might remember I posted a depression topic (which I seem be managing now) and now im back. While my over all happiness is pretty good right now, I seem have lost my self-worth and willpower, I can't seem to do anything! Working out is difficult and so is completing academic work. I guess I bring this up now because I wanted to try and practice/gain some skill at soccer this summer, even if that's just getting to the point where I can juggle the ball for a few seconds. Im worried that ill just slack off and not do this (and other summer activities)! Scheduling doesnt work for me, ive always just gotten bored and stopped; I also hate schedules.

So any tips? Am I still a little depressed? How do you get motivated?

All help 'preciated during this long and sleepless night!

PTW because I was considering asking for help with my total lack of motivation. It's like I have no energy - I can't push myself in anything. And I gather that you feel the same?

I don't do schedules, I do flexible lists of things that need to be done within the next week or so.  I pick a bunch of items that look doable and try to get them done every day.

Yea, its kinda like ive lost the will to live (not suicidy, but like no passiony) I only know something is wierd because i have short, intense moments of passion that never seem to stick.

EDIT: and it's not so much like: im not gonna do this this week, its like: im here but I can do it later right?

For that, holding off something enjoyable works. Like, I hate mowing and lawn trimming, but I wouldn't let myself play Animal Crossing until I did one one day and the other the next. Thus, I had options in case I really didn't want to do the thing, but still a reward for doing it. That way, if you still don't want to do the unpleasant thing to do your favorite thing, you can start to reconsider how much you actually care about and want to do the first thing.

And I hope that was teetering on the comprehensible side of ambiguity.

This method works for me, so the problem isn't starting something. The problem is continuing when I don't have to. Lifting the weight that one extra time, or doing review work instead of just mindlessly gazing at the course material.

Here.  Use this as a trigger.  If you catch youself saying this, grit your teeth, and DO IT NOW YOU LAZY COUCHFUCK.

You'll feel better after it's done; trust me.

willpower

Cheat. Generate desire. Don't perceive from the angle of "this will benefit me even if I hate it, therefore I will force myself to do it." Instead, perceive from the angle of "I want this." It then becomes easy to do. Just be sure to perceive it as "I want this" and not "I want the completely unrelated end result that I think will come from forcing myself to do this thing I hate."

This right here is some sage advice. Reward yourself when you do things that you wanted to do.

fake it 'till you make it
It's a problem I have to and one thing I work on to 'fix' it is to first stop pushing myself, stop fighting with myself. I'm actually wasting more energy in debating what to do with myself than it would have taken to actually do, for example, the dishes. Stop thinking and just do it.

Get friends to help you with going to sport. If you're not doing it alone it helps to keep you going even when motivation is lacking. Staying motivated for a long time isn't easy. It comes and goes, just like all things in life.

What for me also made a difference was to realize that I wasn't lazy, or unmotivated. I was demanding too much of myself. How? I demanded of myself that I was good at the sport in question and I couldn't help but dread that I wasn't perfect. This is a slight exaggeration, but the point remains. Since I can't stand not being good at things I quickly get discouraged, sometimes to the point where I don't even try things because 'I'll just lose my motivation halfway through anyway'. The point to this story? The worst thing you can do for your motivation is getting on your case about it. Any other point I wanted to make, I forgot about. I hope this rant was helpful anyway

As much as it is cheesy, my grandma always said "In a healthy body resides a healthy mind"
First of all, get at least 8 hourse of sleep, preferably early to bed, early to rise, drink a lot through the day, vary meals etc. Your biological needs must be met first, sicne they too can affect your state of mind through deficiencies.

As for motivation, I am no psychologist, sorry. I just have my life's dream which I pursue and I know exactly what must be done to get there.
