:"Shit, that's pretty cool. Not sure I know how to do that, though... really, I barely know what the hell I'm doing WITH the tome."

"Eh, it's not like it's all that special. Any sage worth their salt can do it. Anyway, that seems to be the closest thing that I can think of to what you're doing. Except, of course, that it's linked to the tome you use but I'm not close to knowlegable enough to even begin to comprehend how that works." Maybe daddy could though. Back to the lesson, Anita. Focus. "But as I was saying tomes are just a medium to aid with casting magic. The runes inside them are just mini contracts to the spirits that control, or rather make up, magic." Her mind began to wander again as she finished retelling one of her lessons, this time trying to grasp how Jago could do what he did.

"Hey, have you noticed anything different about yourself since you started casting magic? Like do you feel more tired than usual or anything like that." She asked because she thought that maybe Jago was somehow doing what she had just done, but without realizing it and that the tome was just lessening the affects somehow.

Jago scratched his head and shrugged.
:"Er... not really, I mean, not more tired than I usually am in battle. Also... mini-contracts, huh? Uh... what am I agreeing to?"

"It's basically just asking for power in exchange for some of your energy. The stronger the spell the more energy they want. That's why tomes are so popular, because they act as the energy you'd be giving to the spirit to cast the spell."

:"...oh, huh! I really didn't know any of this... didn't exactly have a lot of mages back in the village! Still, I think I definitely don't mind having a mage here! Well, ooone specific mage."
Jago grinned at Anita.

"Well when you spend basically all your life studying magic you tend pick up on stuff like that." Anita did her best to not let any disdain slip into her voice when she that. And then Jago suddenly brought the previous topic back just like that!

"And I like being here. It might seem a bit weird to say that considering what we're doing but, well, I finally feel like I'm free and living for myself. Making my own decisions and stuff like that."

Her face reddened a bit.

"And I like being... with you."

~Chapter 10~
~The Nature of Humans~
Having made their way to the homeland of their enemy, Diana and her forces soon find the local population discontent and confused over the behavior of their king. Spare little help is offered to them, but neither do the citizens stand in their way. From the citizens willing to talk, they learn little; Ansel is in his castle, and his military and nation are devastated by the colossal task of conquering most of the continent. Very soon, Castle Exsten comes into view...

"...Well, this is it." Wilfort said, sitting atop his steed, looking at the gates of Castle Exsten. "It's weird though, there are no guards outside. We should probably move forward and try to get inside before they have time to properly prepare defenses."

"The lack of guards worries me but we need to press forward. We can't stop now. Princess, we'll follow your lead."

Wilfort turned to Diana. "You should probably say something before we go in. Inspire them, you know."

Diana nodded and stepped in front of her troops.

"We're coming to the end of this war. Ahead is the Exsten castle and our target, Ansel. We end him, and we bring peace back to the lands. We will do it for the friends and family we've lost, for the friends and family others have lost due to Ansel's aggression. We will do it to prevent further losses."

"I am proud to have fought alongside each and every one of you, and if you wish it, there is a place in my kingdom for you. But whatever you decide, I would like for us to part as friends once this struggle is over."

She turned to Exsten castle and drew her sword.

"And now... we finish this, once and for all."

Ursa looked at the doors of Ansel's castle with contempt. Taking an axe in each hand, he approached the entrance and roared out his challenge:

: "EX-TENS, BEWARE! Diana is here and she will kill you all!"

Ursa moves to (21,26) and SMASHES THE DOORS DOWN!

The metal doors bent, curved, and sheared open as Ursa's axe was forced through the door. A few armed soldiers turned to face the doorway.

"Intruders! Make ready for battle!"

"Princess, don't you think it's a bit too quiet? After all, we're in middle of the most powerful nation on the continent and attempting to murder its ruler. Shouldn't we be choking under a flood of elite guards and blasted apart by hordes of powerful battlemages?"
