Oscar stepped to the side of Princess.

"I'm going with you. Not that I don't trust Ursa or his abilities... but just in case it starts raining Exstenian wyverns or something of that kind."

"Excuse me, is there a quite place around here for me to study these books?"

"You can use the library. It's up the second floor. You go up the stairs, go left down the hall, and it's the second doorway on the right."

"Thank you very much. If someone needs me, I'll be there."

Lucas then follows the directions and gets to the library to study his new tome and look around for any other interesting books.

Lucas finds less a library and more a small study. Maybe 12 bookcases, nothing like the vaults of knowledge he knows in Osngaria.

Worse, not much inside relates to magic beyond the beginner level, and most of the books either contain historical texts, or are in fact  old tax ledgers from around Ulfijan.

"Well, this is a disappointment. But it'll do for now."

After a while of studying Nosferatu...

"I think I got the basics of it. I still don't really know what these "Health Points" are supposed to mean, I'll have to get back on it later."

Lucas looks around the scarce collection of books.

"I guess any information about the Divine weapons could help. Let's see if these books have something about them."

Some of the history books mention the Divine Weapons during the end of the rule of dragons, but none of them seem to go into any detail.

"Nothing helpful. Again. I'll look up something about Ulfijani traditions and customs to get used to being around here."

((Wasn't there something about dueling the Emperor/Empress?))

Lucas comes across an old law book. It's pretty dry stuff overall, but there is a section on the mandate from Empress Ulfijan, the founder of the nation and blessed heroine who helped to slay the dragons, dictating that any man or woman who could not defend the throne in single combat would not be fit to sit upon it.

The laws for challenging the throne are very simple. A formal verbal challenge must be submitted at court. Then, the standing Emperor or Empress decides the method of combat. Precedent is usually a duel of archery. All challenges must be fought to the death. A footnote points out that because the reigning ruler tends to use Brahmastra in the duel, the challenges are both few and far between.

There is also a small subsection afterword mentioning that though using a Divine Weapon against another man is an affront to God, using the Divine Bow in such a challenge is exempt from that rule, as the Emperor rules by Divine Mandate.

Diana followed the other three over to the mountain.

"I'm not sure this is climbable, Ursa."

She knocked on the smoothed, sheer rock face.

"Oh."

It takes a few seconds before realizing the full implications of this particular law.

"Oh! This could be bad. Really really bad. I have to talk to the prince about this."

Lucas runs back to where they last met.

"Told'ja. It was done this way specifically so people couldn't come into the city through the mountains. No one could climb it, especially with gear for training with them."

Unfortunately for Lucas, the princess had left the magic shop.

Ursa eyed the walls. Sheer, yes, but there was a rough section that led further up. Maybe, just maybe...

He spat into his hands and attempted to climb at least a few feet.

"Oh give it up big guy, there's no way you'll reach flat ground before your arms give out."

"...Okay, I'll admit, you're getting pretty high up there, but sooner or later you're gonna fall down, now get back here before you hurt yourself!"

"... Son of a bitch but he's way up there."

Eventually, Ursa reached a point where the masons had apparently decided to quit making sheer walls and the terrain returned to its natural state. He clambered up, waved to the people below, and worked his way back down.

: "This good exercise!" he shouted once he was close enough to be heard. "Stone-workers did good job, this tougher to climb than tree!"
