Grewie is let in to see the king in his private chambers, where he sat and poured over over whatever maps of the kingdom he had. The war preparations were in full swing, and Marshal's strategies seemed to be played out over and over on the table with counters painted in different colours, moved from place to place.

"Ah, my ambassador returns. Who news do you bring of the barbarians?"

"I bring good news and bad. The good news is, only the Alvlings are involved--the other clans don't seem interested in attacking us or anything like that."
Grewie paused, trying to think of the best way to word this.
"The bad news is severe. The Alvlings intend to attack us. They appear to be preparing for war, much to my displeasure. We will need to strike back, strike hard, and hopefully this will provoke them to attempt peace.
"I do have a couple bits of good news. Firstly, there is a minor demon in the Alvling lands, which should draw resources away from the war until they destroy it. Secondly, your majesty was correct in his assumptions--the increased tribute was demanded for no particular reason except that they felt they could."

"Hmm, so the war is inevitable." The king scratched his chin, looking thoughtfully at the map.
"If you have any insights I would welcome them, otherwise prepare to aid our armies with magic. If you can that is."

"In addition to our scouts, if you could aid us with scrying or some sort of far-vision magic to relay enemy locations to us as they appraoch, that would be ideal."

"I'll get to work on that immediately."

Grewie thought. This isn't something he could just rush out and do. He needed to plan. Rushing a spell is fine in an emergency, but when you have time, when you can prepare...use it, do so.

Grewie begins to plan out a device that could be properly enchanted to allow it to scry over long distances, as well as the enchantments required to do so.

[2+1,6] Such devices are very rare if not completely unheard of, with you having seen only most brief of descriptions, but your knowledge of magical energies allows you to prepare enchantments and devise ways of channeling power that would allow for basic far distance-scrying. You even managed to make a list of necessary resources, which turns out more expensive than you thought. Delicate aperture, channeling crystals and necessary runes and engravings, in all, you are sure that the cost is close to tens of pounds.

Oh dear...well, the King asked for it; if he wants it, he will need to pay for it. If he won't pay for it, he can't get it. There's no way around it. I just hope he isn't one of those kings who executes subjects for reasons beyond their control...

Grewie attempts to schedule an appointment with the king.

"Your Majesty? I did some research on that long-distance scrying device you wanted me to create. It seems that few have ever been created, but I have discovered how to make one myself." He took a deep, nervous breath. "The problem is, it requires many expensive components. I am uncertain of the exact total cost, but I believe it would cost in the tens of pounds. If I cannot get these components, I simply cannot create the device."

Arcadius was demanding but not an unreasonable man. His frown deepened however.

"Human magic seems to be a costly affair, while Hulen brings me divine gifts whenever asked. But that is the price of your craft. I won't punish you for this, but I would be interested in any other way you would be able to help. Otherwise I don't think court mage seems to be of use to me. Unless..."

King got up, paced around the room for a bit before stopping and speaking up again.
"Contact the librarian, ask him about royal crown. Its an important artifact lost during reign of my great-grandfather, an artifact of Meridian himself. He created it as a symbol of future reign over all the tribes, but it was not meant to be. No one dared to wear it since his reign, and now we are missing it. The librarian mentioned non-papal ogres or elves, I wish you to investigate that case. Use your magic talents to find it."

Grewie can choose between applying himself as a battlemage or go treasure hunting.

Grewie had failed his king, and he knew it from the moment Arcadius had opened his mouth.

Thankfully, his head was staying on his shoulders.

He had never wanted to be a soldier--part of why he became Arcadius II's adviser and magician--which left him the option of trying to find the royal crown. It could be dangerous, but it was the king of danger he could handle. Brief fights, no time for him to get fearful, no arrows coming out of crowds to impale everyone near him...Stop it, Grewie told himself. Nothing to fear. Nothing to fear...

Before he started on preparations and planning, he had to do a lot of research, guess where it could be, what obstacles he would or could face. Grewie contacted the librarian to begin his search through the texts he can find.

Kyle of course was well aware of the lore behind both of the suggested creatures.
"That idiot told you to do what!?"

"He requested that I attempt to find the Royal Crown, and to investigate elves and non-papal ogres. I was planning to focus on the former. And I'd prefer that you not refer to the king as 'that idiot'..."

"I told him not to do that, I advised him against it. He wants you to hunt two incredibly rare creatures to find a crown!? Look, I would find it more likely that a roaming band of adventurers have than a non-papal Ogre and even less likely that an elf took it. But if you're dead set on your quest I will look into it... By the way, if you do happen to find an elf would you please bring it back here?"

"Certainly. And I'm more interested in finding the Crown than non-papal ogres or elves."
