Holy crap you're using my suggestion.  :D

If the suggestions are good, then I am going to be adding them, and giving credit to the person who suggested it in the first place within the game.  As well as within a section of the in-game credits, there would be an NPC for those who are in the credits.  In your case, the NPC would have the name 'Lord of Gamers' or something like that.

Well, I had the book...then a school project never allowed me to open it.  Now it had to be returned, and is on reserve by someone, so I won't be seeing it for another 2 weeks minimum...even then, classes would get in the way...damn...

You don't have to pause everything for a book. There must be a thousand java tutorials of how to make games using the language out there in the 'net!

I'm thinking of going over to C++ instead.  I want to change the engine, and all the 2d engines (I'm going for coding simplicity) are old, not made for this kind of game, or are for an online game.  I found a pretty good one for C++ that seems to be what I am looking for, so I am thinking about it.

I learn fast, too but never worked with C++ yet (looked at, but mainly Java and C# with some VB, HTML, PHP, Javascript and JSP)

good luck also I suggest if you are going the route of C++ is get OpenGL funny thing is there are more C++ OpenGL tutorials online then there is for Java OpenGL.
So OGL will for sure help you get your engine started. Also for randomly genned terrain Perlin Noise or Diamond Square methods are good to look into (Id suggest Perlin Noise, also was fixed by Perlin and renamed to Simplex Noise)

I am also a semi good 3d Modeller and Animator, saddly I have my own project (Java OGL or also known as LWJGL)

Well, I've have had so much to do, that I haven't even been able to learn the C++ programming, much less start it.  I don't think I will be able to until the weekend, and even then, there are likely to be projects that I need to do...

The other thing you are going to have to decide is simply speaking is how you are going to handle the age aspect of Dragons.

Whether it will be gradual aging with changes in its art at certain intervals... Or if there will be "Stages of life" that will be sudden and bring up the new rules of the game.

Now the reason why Life Stages instead of Gradual aging is a possible choice, in my mind, is that it allows you to stage the content simply by playing off the dragon's size. So a hatchling dragon would be in small caves and glenns and every age basically shoves the dragon out of its smaller and smaller world.

It also lets to stage different elements of the game as they come so as not to overwhelm the newer player.

Gradual Aging though has a more organic approach and is less jarring allowing for the feel of steadily growing along with the game.

---

Though I ultimately keep thinking of treasure and how important that is for a dragon (Who are hoarders) and I cannot think of much other then making it be EXP.

I guess it could be tied into some sort of reputation system as sort of a status symbol.

Ohh well, tis all I can think of. I am trying to think of options mostly.

Well, then.  Trying to find a good C++ compiler that wouldn't put strain upon my internet is too much of a headache.  Back to Java!  Oh, and I found this isometric java engine.  A quick glance through the code has it seemingly more complete than Janon, so I'm going to try it out.  It actually helps solve one issue that had been at the back of my mind: how was flight going to work?

I heard Unity is also good.

It's...a little too large in the size of the file for my comfort.  If it is too confounding for me to understand, I would likely drop it to maintain the will to work on this project, and that would be a great deal of data used up.

The other thing you are going to have to decide is simply speaking is how you are going to handle the age aspect of Dragons.

Gradual Aging though has a more organic approach and is less jarring allowing for the feel of steadily growing along with the game.

All of the ideas I have go more along the lines of Gradual Aging, with the character image starting out as small within the game grid, then growing to fill the entirety of that grid space, before expanding into covering a 2x2 grid, before slowly growing to fill that, reaching 3x3.  This would continue until a point (yet to be determined).

Note: Images of others would be scaled.  1x1 would have small entitiess, ex. lizards and chickens.  2x2 would have larger entities, such as dogs and humans.  3x3 would have even larger entities, such as horses and trolls.

Though I ultimately keep thinking of treasure and how important that is for a dragon (Who are hoarders) and I cannot think of much other then making it be EXP.

I guess it could be tied into some sort of reputation system as sort of a status symbol.

I'll likely tie it to reputation.
