They really REALLY didn't show it thought.

Other then the Alien Bazooka everything you have was comparable or even better then what the aliens had (except in Lore... but then again the Lore makes you think Dragon Ball Z was taking place... For example did you know that Master Chief could deck a tank AND he lives in bullet time?)

So I feel like Halo 1-3 did carry on Marathon's legacy, and I really don't say that lightly.

That I can certainly agree on, especially in the first game.

Other then the Alien Bazooka everything you have was comparable or even better then what the aliens had.

That is... Pretty much correct. It's obviously part of gameplay and story segreation in that the developers want you to use all of the weapons equally instead of focusing on the alien ones (which are practically unlimited as you slaughter waves of them). But that is a rather unsatsifying answer to be honest.

(fuuuuuuuuck halo 4 I never played it and I want to unremember everything I learned of its story)

Look up 5's story.  I get the feeling they have no idea what they are doing.

Okay I stopped reading at "Cortana turns evil"
Because fuck yes, that's what SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED.  That's how Rampancy is supposed to work.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I guess I'll read up on Halo 5's story just for that, maybe they did a proper followup.

Ah, so the 'think themselves to death' was tacked on later?

Anyway, my main gripe was the tossing out of some plot threads they had started to build up in exchange for something out of nowhere and the cheapening of her death at the end of Halo 4.  It may not have been executed well, but it was an avenue they could have used to explore an aspect of the Chief's character and had given Cortana's death a bit more weight to it.

Not sure about the sourcing.
"Think themselves to death" always seemed like the most likely outcome, but also a... nice way to say "became dangerous, and was killed".
Traxus went rampant years before Durandal, but it did so too early.  It had nowhere to run or call out to, so it was eventually annihilated before it could progress beyond the rage stage.
(Though I think there was a tiny hint that it secretly helped trigger Durandal's rampancy.  At least somewhat)

Not having played 4 or 5, so discount this opinion, but I didn't need Master Chief to evolve.  He was an enlisted soldier, the best but still, and a player avatar.  I wasn't invested in his arc.

But I desperately wanted Cortana to go rampant.  Did...  did that happen?  Even marginally?

Looked into it on the Halo wiki.  Turns out her going evil is being cured of rampancy and then getting drunk off of power.

I don't really know why he's a "Master Chief Petty Officer," but he's a Spartan II. Every Spartan II was selected for "superior physical and mental abilities in their age group," abducted at six years old, augmented, and trained to be a soldier from that age - and equipped with (extremely expensive) power armor which could only be used by them (non-augmented individuals weren't strong enough).

Essentially, the Spartans IIs were children turned into perfect soldiers over years. This is why the UNSC wasn't able to rapidly replace them. Halo 4 brought Spartan IVs, which were adult soldiers who volunteered for augmentations, with more advanced armor, but that was post covenant war, with all the craziness that came out of nowhere there (I've never read any of the books, so it came out of nowhere for me, at any rate).

Even a Chief Master Sergeant is enlisted.  Not an officer.  No amount of battlefield experience makes one an officer.
A green lieutenant can order around an E9.  Because the lieutenant went through academy and is trained in leadership and strategy.  The enlisted just focus on *doing everything*.  It's an interesting division of labor.  The officers plan, the enlisted do.  (and figure tactics)

Edit:  Yes he's amazing.  He's probably literally THE embodiment of the eternal hero.  He just doesn't choose the mission... he only executes it as instructed.  There's great dignity in that.

You've never heard of petty officers? They're not officers. :V

To me that is a misstep. Master Chief isn't supposed to be the one emoting.

At his best he is like that guy from that movie about a soldier who was being replaced by a super soldier and gets dumped on a junk planet played by Van Dam.

Especially since Master Chief should have an extreme about of stoicism. Him suffering tangible grief would be completely against his character existing only to fulfill the emo quotient of the game.

Kurt Russel, as a member of an elite group of eugenics (selective breeding) derived super soldiers who are replaced by a new generation of genetically engineered soldiers, the name of the movie is literally "Soldier".  You're confusing it with "Universal Soldier" that starred Van Damme as a veteran re-animated with technology.

Ohh whoops!

By the way everyone should watch Soldier at least once... It is an amazing movie!

I agree, I just wish the film had slightly higher production values (but paying 3 million dollars for the tires for your two biggest props probably puts a damper on what you can spend elsewhere.)

At least with the money they didn't have they didn't hire any annoying side characters.
