I'm not sure if people using the ESRB rating system as a crutch is any different from people using the MPAA rating system as a crutch for movies, though.

Ohh don't get me wrong the ESRB system is far FAR superior to the MPAA... which is so corrupt it should be disbanded and remade.

Let's just overthrow our respective governments and establish a new world order!

I mean, I can just download it off GOG. And if somehow they're like 'We will not sell this game under any circumstances to people under 18 years old' and presuming I don't just... Y'know, lie, I'll just pirate it (which I'd really rather not do, since CDPR is awesome) and then buy it when I hit 18. Nothing is going to stop me from playing Witcher 3, I am sooo Hype for that game.

I tried to buy the Diablo box set as a young'un. The cashier quickly mumbled "Are you 18?" and didn't even wait for my reply before ringing it up anyway. That's the one time I can remember being even vaguely prohibited from playing anything.

That happens to me a liquor stores sometimes.  Weirdly I'm 34.

Before you go "Well that isn't a Pet Peeve at all" I should perhaps qualify.

I mean I like a game LESS for having bad DLC... even if I never EVER intend to buy. Somehow the existence of these add ons just make me like the game less.

I have the same thing. Knowing there is content to the game that you will never play because it costs more than it's worth makes the game worse.
Of course, even worse is when they add an NPC to your camp that sells DLC.

RE: ESRB Ratings

First off, GameStop will sell you an M rated game if you're 17 with a state ID. Not 18. If someone looks to be over 30 or so, I don't even bother, unless my DM or corporate is in the room.

If it helps, when someone has questions about the rating of a game, I'll pull up a review of the game on my phone or use examples from other games that I've played. Many laughs have been had at these exchanges:

Parent: "What does 'suggestive themes' mean?"
Me: "Cleavage, mostly."

Parent: "My kid is 15. Do you think 'partial nudity' would be too much for them?"
Me: "Not really."
Parent: *shocked look*
Me: "Partial nudity is usually a buttcheek, or very rarely a full butt."

Look at LEAST ESRB has to justify themselves and if you go to their website they will actually show you the reasons why it got the rating. As well their ratings are usually fair or at least consistent. Bully Is probably the most M-Rated game I ever seen that is rated T (it is pretty much the only "Rated T" game I've ever seen that I feel is actually for teens)

I am more ticked at parents then the actual ESRBs.

The Film board on the other hand... no I dislike them immensely.

Best of all, the ESRB ratings have essentially zero impact on who can get what. They're not legally binding in any sense of the word. Most game stores (mine included) follow them to show the moral guardians, "Look, we're thinking of the children!"

Today, I sold a man an M rated game for his child who was under the teen age group. (He looked to be about 8. The game was Watch Dogs.) He asked me a bunch of questions about why it was rated the way it was (this is actually very rare. Usually it's "Mombuymethisgame." "Okay, whatever, I don't care, just shut up.") I told him about the scene with the implied cannibalism and the auction and all the other stuff in it, and his reaction was to look at the kid and say, "Don't tell your mom." *shrug* Nothing I can do about that.

Except for Porn... but to my knowledge the ESRB has never, so far, made a game rated X for political reasons.

ESRB doesn't use the X rating. That's for the MPAA. ESRB rates stuff like that as AO, which doesn't get sold in mainstream stores.
