Snipers, and other kill-you-without-engaging-you bullocks.

Doing the monkey dance to dodge hitscan death-rays isn't fun, and I would like to use the large portion of the map that's actually open instead of the cover, tiny corridors and cubby hole portion of the map without fear of instant death from being in someones line of sight for half a second.  If it exists, I would like a viable counter that doesn't involve being a better sniper than the other person, that's just fighting bullcrap with more bullcrap.

Aww man, being a sniper rocked in BF2 AIX.
Fairly fast fire-rate, hitscane, 1HKO 10/10.

Of course, my other tactic was, at one point, climbing up on a roof overlooking a combat zone and using the Grenade Launcher. Much kills were had.

ESRB ratings are stupid.
You're 17. Of course you would say that. When I was your age I thought they were stupid too.

Not really harping on at you in particular, just saying what I think about ESRB ratings.

I guess it would count as a 'gaming pet peeve', though the same goes for almost everything with an 'age restriction'. I dislike things that restrict people based on arbitrary things. (In-game as well, freaking invisible walls. >_>)

The reason why I think they're stupid is because people mature at different rates. I'm all for things that allow parents to decide what their child is exposed to, because that is their prerogative, but 'age ratings' are... Well, purely arbitrary. It's different to alcohol and driving where legitimate biological factors come into play.  ESRB ratings should honestly just be a description of what the game contains (though honestly they suck at that a lot of the time anyway) to allow the parents or buyer of the game to decide.

By the way:

Just to let you know, that kind of thing ("of course you would say that") is incredibly condescending.
This is an identical statement, directed towards you instead of towards me. 'You're 27. Of course you'd say that.', alternatively, 'Well obviously an old geezer like you wouldn't have a know what you're talking about.'
See how it invalidates your entire opinion in a ridiculous fashion? Here are a few more examples. Somewhat more extreme, though.

'Someone who believes in God wouldn't have a clue.'

'What, you think an atheist would understand?'

'You are black, your opinion is thus invalid'

'You are white, anything you have to say is wrong.'

Of course, I highly doubt giving off that sort of attitude was your intention. Sorry if it sounds like I'm insulting you or something, I couldn't think of a better way to explain.

Well it is insulting, but that's alright. I don't really care. It's the internet. None of this matters because it's not happening outside of the internet. While I'm on that tangent I'm going to break my account so I don't ever bother coming back to this place again. 4chan has more tolerant people than this pisspot.

Hmm... This escalated rather quickly. Hopefully Toady will decide to delete all of these posts, they're rather... Unsightly. It seems some people can't help but take everything anyone says that isn't in agreement with them as a personal insult and declaration of war.

I don't even know what just happened, "Ya it's insulting but you aren't tolerant so I'm leaving?"... was going to respond, but apparently he's gone, ok! So, how about them gaming pet peeves!
Missions that are just collections of side activities
Specifically saint's Row IV. They have a bunch of character missions, but each one is just a straight up copy of one of the side activities. If I'm doing missions I'd like for them to be unique scenarios. If I want to jump in front of cars I'll seek out that activity on my own thankyouverymuch.

ESRB rating are a bit pointless.

In saying that, my brother is 10 years older than me so when I was a "yoof" I basically had all the games he had. After he left, when I was 14, my mum wasn't particularly bothered by me playing ultra-violent games, after a conversation she and I had after discovering me playing MKII when I was... awfully young.

Even then, buying games online doesn't require age verification, except for the occasional "are you 18?" tick boxes.

Artificially making the game longer with stupid side activities

Specifically in Mass Effect. In the first, the Mako segments on the planets. Basically have a big square with some interesting points, but there are hills everywhere, so it takes ages to explore with your little car, and doesn't add anything to the game. The side missions in the game are usually pretty interesting, and even affect the later games in the series, but getting to them is usually a pain in the arse.

In the second, they replaced the Mako with planet-scanning for resources, which basically involves moving your mouse/stick up and down while holding a button to scan a sphere. Sometimes you get a mission, often-times not. That's even worse than the Mako noise!

* timferius puts on parent/gamer hat

ESRB ratings serve two purposes. 1) they remove liability from the game companies, and really, it's all they can reasonably do to manage who plays their games
2) they are a parenting crutch. They exist for parents who don't care to either a) learn the subject matter and/or b) take responsibility for monitoring their children's growth/maturity.

As a parent, you need to be able to know when your kids are mature enough to handle things, and honestly those numbers are a high bar, for the security of the gaming companies. When my kids can prove to me that they can handle the content of the game maturely, and that they have a firm grasp on game vs. reality, then they'll be allowed at it.

Plus I'm at odds with society's priorities anyways (bloody murder is fine, but good lord NOT A BREAST!).

Isn't ESRB that thing where you can view at a glance whether any particular product has violence/drugs/whatever in it? As a to-be parent, that sounds moderately useful. Of course I wouldn't take ESRB ratings at face value. What I could do is learn that a given game has drug use, which I could then look into and think for myself whether the implied/shown drug use is handled in such a way that I'd want to allow or disallow it from my crotchspawn.

And I just checked ESRB website and lo and behold, they have this bit:
Quote
The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ratings provide guidance about video games and apps so that consumers, especially parents, can make informed choices about the ones they deem suitable for their family.
Unsurprisingly, even the ESRB folks themselves consider their ratings to be more of a flexible guideline than a strict do/don't listing.

Yes, that doesn't stop parents using it as a crutch. The list of stuff isn't bad, the issue is the giant Age Stamp rating, like all kids mature the same.

+1 to this ^^^^. The list is good. The giant emblazoned 'Age Number' is not. Hell, I only just recently found out they were like the pirate's code. When I was younger I thought they were absolute, strict, rules.

I'm fine with it, but I honestly think that 'guideline' shouldn't be there at all. It's often used as an absolute determiner, which is the issue. The info is fine, the info is good (except when that info is misrepresentation which is honestly far too often) but the age-rating can go screw itself.

Actually, breasts are fne (see: Ivy from DoA), it's nipples that are an absolute no-go. For they are the source of the breast's power, and must not see the light of day lest mass head-explosions be caused.

What is funny is some countries are the COMPLETE opposite... Naked boarderline porn is fine... but Heaven forgive they show any blood!

It is all cultural really.

But yeah Parents rarely use the ESRB to be informed, they seem to use it as a binary system. I remember when this kid couldn't play a videogame because it was rated T (because they were 12) and I was like "why? The game doesn't have anything bad in it... There is more gorey violence in My Little Pony"

And yes this is a Gaming Pet Peeve of Mine.

I'm not sure if people using the ESRB rating system as a crutch is any different from people using the MPAA rating system as a crutch for movies, though.  Ignorant people are ignorant, regardless of medium.  It's not really the fault of the ESRB system.  It is nice, though, that every attempt by moral authorities to pass state legislation mandating its enforcement as a hard restriction has been struck down on constitutional grounds in the US.  It's a bit different in a few provinces of Canada, though, though I think that even there, enforcement is sometimes a bit lenient.

Ohh don't get me wrong the ESRB system is far FAR superior to the MPAA... which is so corrupt it should be disbanded and remade.
