Poor sound design

Doom 3 suffered from this hard in my opinion. I can't name a single gun in that game that felt satisfying to use. The pistol didn't even sound like a gun, more like a distorted dog barking. The machine gun was just a high-pitched version of that. The shotgun was okay but not spectacular. The plasma gun was way too quiet, to the point where I started to think that the sound wasn't playing during the final boss fight. It felt like I was playing with those dollar-store toy guns that have speakers in them and play samples when the trigger is pulled.
This. So much this.

It really takes a lot from the game when your bad-ass shotgun sounds like someone slapping a table with a fish. And the fish is a sardine.

Games that fuck around with setting/themes of the source material.
"Enslaved: Odyssey to the West" which was based off the far more interesting Chinese book called "Journey to the West" was a massive culprit of this. Water down with it's setting and contents "Americanised" to appeal to marketers who believe you can only sell Americans to other Americans.

The latest example of this that really got my blood boiling was the announcement that the new Mad Max game won't take place in Australia. Fuck. That. Shit. To top all of that of the protagonist now has the mandatory bland American gravel growl now which is so boringly placed in every AAA game. I suddenly have no interested in Not-Mad Max: Generic Post-Apocalyptic Setting #43.

10mm pistol in fallout 3 as compared to fallout 1 pistol is just sad. They made it sound better in new Vegas though. Then theres the 0.32 revolver which sounds better but does nil damage, youd be better off just punching your enemies as that doesnt waster ammo for hunting rifle.  :-\

won't bloody take bloody place in bloody Australia
That's it, I'm officially not buying the game. And possibly blowing the developer's house.

Quote from: IGN
It was a surprise then, at Warner Bros.’ Behind Closed Doors demo at E3, to hear Max speak not with an Aussie twang but a gravelly American growl, a cookie-cutter ‘tough-video-game-angry-man’ accent. Surely developer Avalanche Studios isn’t seriously stripping the franchise of its Australian roots? Surely we’re not yet at a point where all game protagonists need to be white-washed into a collective pool of generic American anti-heroism?

“We treated this as a completely new property,” said Avalanche Founder and Chief Creative Officer Christofer Sundberg, when I enquired after the studio’s decision. “And that was really the only way for us to take on a licensed game.  It’s the first licensed game we’ve ever taken on. And we wanted to treat it like an original IP. The setting – where it is in the world – has really nothing to do with the Mad Max video game. It’s really a game to do with the relationships between different people in this world."

Well, add games media that claims to be based on some source material but literally only uses the name to the list.

My personal game peeve is useless magics.

I have the power to bend the forces of nature to my will. WHY IS THE GUY WITH THE POINTY STICK STRONGER!

I should be able to blast everything with magic. It should be easier. The warrior should be the harder class to play as.

For RPGs

High-HP Low Difficulty
While this is fairly common this has become insane over the years. Bosses that can take an hour but pose absolutely no threat? WHY!?!

Oh yes.

In other game types too, where they make enemies harder by simply giving them tons of HP rather than making them act/play smarter.

The final boss of Borderlands 2 anyone? It was so dumb, you could stand off to the side and never get hurt. Yet it took a friend and I about half an hour to kill it, firing nonstop. What a tough battle...

There is so much bastardized media based on "Journey to the West".  Especially from China itself.  It ain't too odd that this got bastardized for a Western game market.
