The Tales games typically do it right in that... The enemies are USUALLY "unbeatable" but if you have mastered the mechanics of the game you can win anyway.

Still the cheap shots get old... Since really it makes the entire fight pointless. "Well why didn't you just do the trick?"

But the fight wasn't meant to be fought anyway.

Then don't do the fight.

If the fight was ultimately meaningless... don't do it. Just skip to the villain doing his cheap-o-shot-2000 or trap and move on.

This.

If fight is meant to be lost then just make an epic sufficiently dramatic cutscene and move one.
I have no desire to fight for 15 minutes with some guy only to get defeated by some retarded plot device.

Ok here is one. It isn't a HUGE pet peeve but it always bugs me. There are two versions and I'll just stack them both

Power Creep Sliding Scales
Its the end of the game so jumping over a simple rock requires 100 skill

Ok let me explain these two. Lets say you are playing a game where your skills or relationships have a numerical value. What always bugs me is the further through the game you are the higher the numbers you usually require and to a certain extent it makes total sense that things are getting tougher.

Yet, everything is getting tougher... and pretty uniformly so. No longer are there simple checks anymore making anything you didn't seriously invest in pretty useless. It bugs me because, well, in any world other then a "game world" any challenge you face is usually split up into easy and difficult tasks. Crossing a raging river might be incredibly difficult, but the logs around the river aren't usually invisible, they usually don't weigh as much as lead, and the river usually doesn't have giant mecha bears defending it.

The second one is basically the worst form of it. Where things just suddenly require more skill even though it makes no sense. Your suddenly at the end of the game and in spite the fact that what you are doing is incredibly easy, it is still going to require godly amounts of skill to actually pull off.

Both of these in essence makes your skills pretty much intangible because things scale to such a degree that there is no baseline.

It's an exaggeration... well, except maybe in Runescape :P
But it is unfortunate when skills become nigh-useless in the late game unless focused in.  As a general thing, it makes it harder to play characters who blend strengths.

This
(WARNING: Tvtropes link. Open this only if you have nothing to do for the next 5 hours)

Anyway... yeah, Cutscene Incompetence.

I'm playing Dynasty Warriors 8, and I like it, but that is the one thing that ruins the illusion: how am I supposed to believe a major character dies fighting 10 or 20 normal soldiers, if I reached that cutscene only because I was able to defeat MORE THAN 900 of those?
Even worse, 20 arrows during a battle? An acceptable amount of damage. During a cutscene? One of those, and you're out.

I don't care about "realistic" battles! This is Dynasty Warriors!
It goes against all the cheesiness of the setting. Is it so hard to add a couple hundred more people to those scenes?

They do this in some of the DLCs for the Fallout games too. Especially the beginnings of The Pitt and Dead Money, wherein respectively a character who has just fought heir way past an army suddenly surrenders to about half a dozen guys, and a character who is immune to poison due the the events of another DLC is incapacitated with poison.

Well, there is one good example, in Dead Money, a Fallout NV expansion, you face off against holographic cops, right? You gotta sneak by them, or, turn off their emitter, normally they're close by, at the start, the skill checks are about 20-25, but, near the endgame, when playing a puzzle game that has no clues and you don't know how to start because there are three of the bastards, all patrolling in really hard to understand paths that can only be changed by getting to these computers, but I could not for the life of me figure out what it changed or how it helped (these cops are indestructible, by the way, you can't kill them), even at 100 stealth I found it near impossible to get through, however, there are still emitters, though incredibly difficult to get to, those emitters, even though they look and act exactly the same as regular emitters, require upwards of 90 repair skill, right through to 100, I think that's what Neo was talking about.

Yeah, the ones at the end are on the way to the Sierra Madre vault, right? Like... the ones guarding the most secure location is an extremely wealthy casino. As opposed to the first ones who guard the open tables and presumably petty cash.

I wonder why the vault group would be harder.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

But they look exactly the same, that's what I think Neo is going for.
I mean, what difference is it in what you're doing to disable either of them?

Silly Lossmar, progressives are not only compelled but obliged to infest anything that could be considered popular culture. Kind of like how religiouses are morally compelled to try and convert everyone, except you can't insult them by implying they're secretly gay.

No gambesons in medieval fantasy
Why not? It is a cheap, effective armour that can be styled to look pretty much whatever you want it to look like. Witcher 3 has gambesons and it's my favourite fantasy RPG in ever. I mean look at it.

What a very subtle parody! The misspelling was a particularly nice touch.
