Or we could use up single sound illusion, of maybe someone calling for guard behind them in the distance or something like that, less mana usage.

Line of sight is necessary if you want to pull the wool over someones eyes - for sound you only need to choose where it has to be. Homing-illusion-magic sounds somewhat silly. Allright, magic in generall might sound silly, but never mind. Short turn, but nothing I can help here. Bad rolls.

I did give a bonus to the roll on their decision, but running after a thief while in full armour, might not be the most productive thing to do. To be honest, "Murder", or "Fire" would have gotten a slightly bigger one.

You instantly weave some of your mana into a womanly cry of "Thief", clearly coming from the direction whence both of them just came. They stop in their tracks for a moment, and then decide to keep chasing you.

It seems that "that muddy thing" is more important than theft – or they called your illusion. While you gained a few strides with that maneuver, they immediatly close in on you. -3 MP

There is only so much you can do with two grown men after you and it might be time for your sneeze. If even that does not shock them, you doubt anything you have in store will. You do hold that though for a moment thou, maybe you get an even better idea.

Watch and wait, ready to spring aside or demonstrate our flame in an instant, but give the pursuers a chance to show us what they're trying to do or to negotiate with us.

Jump up (between the wings and our small, agile build, we should have good jumping abilities), Sneeze fireily at them, and snag the wall. Climb out of swordrange.

Briefly give one guard an illusion of someone covered in blood moving in a nearby window, angling it so their partner wouldn't be able to see it thanks to the windowframe so they have a reason the "killer" can only be seen by one of them.

If we can make it to that narrow passage then startle one, possibly just by jumping at them, then the cramped quarters and quick pursuit could cause them to stumble into each other.

Do we need line of sight to the person targeted or just to the illusion's location?

Hmm, how to do this so they don't start being on the look-out for the muddy thing? So they don't suspect a trick?

Can we create any illusions besides visual? (can we make one think he's twisted his ankle, & fall down)

I agree, as long as we also agree to actively search for information if we can.

I don't think they're hunting for us. They'd have made little difference against that thief, and the funny-shaped mud ball's likely just piqued their guardsman curiosity. A general cry of 'HEEEEEELP!' would have been better.

-edit
Also, guys, keep in mind that our new thief friend would likely notice any thefts that get up to that hefty sum of 30 gold. However, we might be able to fool him if we can get a couple gold & another bag- two bags, one of rocks inside a larger one, with the gold coins on top. We fool him into not seeing the other bag, and if he pulls out a coin or two his friends will see it's real. Perhaps?

There are "aoe-type" illusions, but those are quite high-tier. Even then, if you want to get the best effect, it is always proper to make a focused effort.

Can we create any illusions besides visual? (can we make one think he's twisted his ankle, & fall down)
Only sounds and visual illusions right now. It is obviously within the repertoire of a skilled illusionist, but not right now. I'm pretty sure we will regain some of our abilities when we get our claws onto the pendant, but we do have quite the messed up mana right now.

Also - sorry, not editing your ninja for interrogation in. We did come out alive afterall, and as soon as we talk it really narrows the spectrum down.

You ready the mystical flames, but decide that you really want to know what they are actually trying to do. For that purpose you begin to face them while growling, but it does not stop them in the slightest, whereas your awkward posture certainly does not much for your own speed. Before you are able to deal your next card – the cunning ploy of jumping up and breathing some live into their faces – one of them decides to wager a kick at you, but he misses the unprepared you slightly. He stumbles for a bit, with his partner just overtaking him.

A moment later this one is uppon you, grabbing for you with his arms. He snatches you up easily, and since you really do not dare to dine on the steel covering his arms, you are only left to struggle with your limbs. This proves futile however, and soon enough he has turned you around, bringing you on eye-level with a firm but surprisingly gentle grip.

What happens next is quite the obvious developement, and with a painfull scream he let's go of you like a rod of glowing iron. He covers his face while screaming, but you very much doubt that it was strong enough to do more than slightly disfiguring his face. Feeling the burn of a dragons fire, and coming out alive – what a lucky man indeed. He was thoroughly surprised thou, and mixed with his pain the influx of mana is almost enough to come out even.

You hear a sword being drawn, and quickly scamper away. As you do not hear any sounds of being chased, a quick look reveals that the blade now leans on the wall, with the injured men seemingly being cared for. Trying to get away from the whole spectacle, you run into the next team of guards. If it is bad luck, or if they have heard the scream is unkown to you, but as you immediatly dodge into another lane, you get lucky and they only pass by. You put some distance behind you and the whole mess, before you start to order your thoughts.

While you might have eluded immediate capture, the guard soon will know that "that muddy thing" has wounded one of their comrades, and is not to be taken lightly. They even might issue a search for you – a most unpleasant developement. While there are about a dozen of mythical beings that have the natural ability to breath fire, it also might cast suspicion upon your death – provided it reaches the magical circle in the city. Not that far-fetched, seeing as such beings certainly would better be dealt with by them.
