Artifact rope and magma
« on: June 09, 2013, 12:26:24 am »

Mostly same as title. I don't have iron on the site so I'm being extra stingy with my metal. I got an artifact cloth rope... I'm wondering if I can use this in rollers submerged in magma without them deconstructing and/or the rope disintegrating. I recall artifacts being indestructible, and that they burn for a long time, but I'd rather not make the guy go insane if I can help it.

They are indeed indestructible, but I think they will still catch fire and just burn forever.  The guy who made it won't get upset about that, but whether that will deconstruct anything made with a !!rope!! I can't say.  I've never tested that.

Well. Considering that submerging a nether-cap minecart causes it to poof, I would suspect it to deconstruct.

I'll have to test on another file, though, as, uh. The goblins got in. No survivors.

:( THAT was fast.

I think I remember someone building a !!well!! that melted anyone who used it while I was still lurking, but that wasn't submerged in magma.

Nether-cap items suffer fire damage because the game doesn't even perform temperature checks to determine if wooden items will catch fire, IIRC. An artifact rope would catch fire, but buildings don't deconstruct until the burning part is destroyed -- which for an artifact part, will be never. A roller using iron and artifact rope should survive.

What I want to know is, will it still smoke? Because if it does then you'll probably want to avoid using it anyway, purely for FPS reasons.

Sounds like worthy science project. I suppose I'll just have to engineer someone to make another artifact rope. Shouldn't be tough, just order one guy to handle all the looming, wait for moods, and when he gets one, savescum the crap out of it until he makes a rope. Then, science.

If you use DFhack I think you could also transform a non-rope cloth item into a rope with the changeitem command.

Kobolds like to glare at constructed artifacts, right? Could an ever-burning artifact act as the flame to the kobold's moth?

I found a human city named Sleevevirgins. It was easily the biggest city in the world, so clearly I wasn't the first person to come inside the city's walls.

I believe its been done.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

With the new "don't catch on fire" pathing updates, will thieves even step into the same tile as a burning artifact to steal it?

I've not actually seen anyone be smart enough not to run into a fire. In fact, fire seems to be a magnetic force.

I did. Various FBs made of fire don't move a step now since every square around them is too hot.
