400 Dwarf Fort, Only thing they kill now is FPS.

Hello! First-timer to these forums, but I figure this is the best place to ask this.

I started up a fort with a pop-cap set to 400 for some reason, and it went along very smoothly for the first 200 or so dwarves. Now, I have 380 dwarves (plus kids and their stupid pets) and my FPS is at best 8. I tried getting the kids to gather under a drawn bridge to squish them, but they take forever to even pretend to try and move that it's just getting stupid. Is there any way to improve my FPS here?

I think I figured it out. Got dfhack and cleaned all the contaminants and scattered broken items that were all over the place. Really helped turn that 400 dwarf city into something that can actually function again. :D

I get 8 fps around 250 dwarves, so you're doing well :D

While I agree, that's a fuckload of Dwarves, I've noticed world history impacts FPS aswell. For example, when I embark on ~Year 6, I can get a decent FPS (23+) until >100. I recently wanted to have a bit of depth in a world, so I embarked ~Year 67, I get ~10FPS with 30 Dwarves.

I did not know that about World History influencing it. Kinda cool, and would also explain why my Queen is an Elf.

On topic, after doing the stuff with dfhack to clean up, my FPS is now at around 30-50. It still drops to 2 if I designate multiple tasks for a very large area/multiple layers, but it's better than the previous 3 FPS at all times that it was at. :P

Now that the FPS is squared away, I gotta figure what to actually *do* with all these beardy-bastards. I'm solid on food/clothing/bedrooms and am nearly totally underground. Any suggestions on stuff to try? :)

I *did* just hit the candy...that could be a good idea. I'm currently re-doing my fortress' architecture to make it more effective, as the upper 20 layers are still set up with a small (100-200) population in mind. Dinky hallways and such, plus it'd be a lot cooler to explore a more grand fortress in adventure mode..I think. :P

You can operate levers in adv mode can't you?

Rig it all up to unleash the HFS with a single lever.

The migrating item thing on abandoning will make it a bit of a treasure hunt for all that nice adamntium stuff, as it gets thrown about all over. But make enough of it and you should find at least some.

Gear up, and proceed down to the depths, throw the lever and die a glorious, glorious death.
