"So it's undead, then. It doesn't seem to be in too good of a state, either. Might as well get rid of it now."

Attack it with my tome.

"I agree. I don't quite see how ANYTHING in that state would be alive!"

Morazin backs up a step and bathes everything in the room with a fiery blast

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Morazin and Anciano race to be the first to destroy any potential threat. And any potential loot.

Init-off

Morazin [5+2=7]
Anaciano [-4+8=4]

Morazin leaps ahead, spitting hell and brimstone!

He lights the corpse on !!Fire!!

Along with a good amount of the shrubbery burns as well, starting to send plumes of toxic-smelling smoke into the closed quarters of the hold. It might get hard to breathe very soon.

Cough! Hack! Cough!

Anciano is winding up for a finishing blast on the smoldering skeleton, when it politely explodes outward for him before he can. The corpses chest cracks open like the worst jack-in-box ever devised-and what surprise should clamber out, but at least seven nasty giant beetles the size of overlarge chickens? Apparently, they were asleep in their 'home', packed in cozy and tight. Their shiny shells are a slimy death black with red speckles, their eyes multifaceted and shiny blue as sapphires.

They hurriedly clamber out of the burning corpse they once occupied.

Beetle 2 Reflex Save=23

Beetle 3 Reflex Save=5
Damage/1

Beetle 4 Reflex Save=14
Damage/1

Beetle 5 Reflex Save=7
Damage/2

Beetle 6 Reflex Save=17

Beetle 7 Reflex Save=14
Damage/1

The beetles all mostly hit the scuzzy water, flapping their stubby wings at high speed-rolling around and smothering the flames before they are damaged much.

The, they all turn to face Morazin, their sharp mandibles clacking and clicking angrily in his general direction.

...

Hey, what a bargain you got on this ship, right?

Beetles roll an average 18 for initiative!

Our heroes roll..

Morazin: 5+1=6
Konicek: 9+2=11
Durham: 13+6=19
Anicano: 20+-4=16

Battle: There are seven angry, quite singed corpse beetles ready to leap upon your group-they are arranged in no particular order across a wide room of burning vegetation and swamp matter. Any possible loot from the corpses is quickly burning up, but perhaps not totally destroyed yet. Durham strikes first, then the insects, then everyone else. Most of them are weak and easily dispatched, but dangerous in these numbers. Your party is standing in front of a door, which leads behind to a narrow hallway. While the ground you are on is stable enough, fighting in the room itself in any place but the center 'island', will incur a DC10 balance check to keep from slipping in the muck. Approaching the walls will also possibly threaten fire and smoke inhalation damage, though it is not yet thick enough to cause problems with breathing or vision, it's catching rapidly and smoke is filling the room.

'Don't let all the items on that corpse burn!"

Cast Create Water over that burning corpse.

"Hmph."

If Durham can reach the center island, he moves there and attacks one of the beetles.

BZzzzzt!

"Hmph."

Durham shuffles through the slime to the center island, finding more or less proper footing-he lashes out at the closest beetle with his sword!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Feeling as thought he should be better at this, his blade slices cleanly through the air and hits absolutely nothing. The beetles all make a keening sound which might be their laughter, in their strange, coleopteric family.

Then they swarm down upon the party!

Two buzz toward Durham!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Nipnipnip! He feels a painful bite on his forearm, as the greasy mandible tears through his shirt! Luckily, the other one tries to bite his neck and gets a mouthful of leather armor.

Three more team up go for morazin, author of their misery

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Two latch onto him and draw blood! One just sort of flies into a wall and sets itself on fire, and dies in a thrashing heap. Derp.

The remaining two beetles each pick one target of the remaining heroes...

But standing by Konicek has it's advantages. Note his long, spear like weapon-he advantageously strikes both of the little beasts as they attempt to close in on him and Anciano
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He skewers one skillfully, beetles parts flying about in dramatic fashion, but the last one does a fancy barrel roll maneuver and dives straight down on [1] Konicek himself!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It blunder into his unarmored face, scratching it with needly claws, and he tosses it away with a mild curse.

...

Anciano, remaining unbitten and unbothered, incants Create Water over the still burning corpse. There is a subtle flash, like a stroke of lightning in minor-and what amount to a bucket of water falls from the air onto the corpse, snuffing out the roiling flames.

Durham as well, is thoroughly soaked.

...

"Crows take you!" The Knight roars, striking with furious fury. At a beetle.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The critter explodes in a puff of wings and viscera, it's tiny body blown to pieces by a swift stroke of his glaive.

....

Morazin hops back, and fires another wave of Dragon fire over the enemy! It's noticeably weaker this time, but the majority of insects are still nicely singed. One more blast should do it...

Spoiler: Beetle Squad (click to show/hide)

Battle: There are now four angry, very much singed corpse beetles in the process of leaping upon your group-two swarm around Morazin, and two around Durham. Anciano is behind Konicek, who is covering them both with his glaive. Durham is standing on the central island, and Morazin has moved slightly ahead to hit all the beetles in range. He can move back to Konicek, but will incur AoO's.

The corpse is now no longer burning, but the fire continues to smolder apace otherwise. The ground you are on is stable enough, fighting in the room itself in any place but the center 'island', will incur a DC10 balance check to keep from slipping in the muck. Approaching the walls will also possibly threaten fire and smoke inhalation damage, though it is not yet thick enough to cause problems with breathing or vision, it's catching rapidly and smoke is filling the room.

Use my tome on beetle 3.

((Dwarmin, you forgot to account for my use of Create Water in my remaining spells list. Giglamesh, Morazin's last attack dealt all of the beetles 1 damage.))

Morazin take's another step back and blasts the room again(FTLOG)

On a side note, I'm now VERY glad I decided on Endure Exposure instead of Draconic Knowledge as my first invocation, otherwise I wouldn't be able to risk blasting away in inclosed spaces like this without friendly fire incidents

Durham, undaunted, regains his footing and heaves his sword overhand at a low flying beetle.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The good steel blade goes snicker-choom! He leaves it dead, and with its corpse, he does punt across the room.

Victory!

The remaining beetles resign themselves to a glorious, level one encounter deaths.

Durham is assaulted!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It promptly impales itself on Durhams sword, in a hari kari fashion.

Haha, silly beetle.

...

The final two swoop on Morazin in chattering wave!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One blunders into his helmet, gnawing harmlessly on the embroidery. The other manages to get at his neck, nipping a nice chunk of flesh off!

Morazin is feeling a bit woozy...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Konicek tromps up, but pauses at the last second, but is unable to get his jab on without also prodding Morazin, he thinks. The double entendres running through his mind paralyze him into inaction.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anciano, however, is either wiser or perhaps too senile to care-he lifts up his light tome and a beam of pure energy flies out, roasting the beetle currently gnawing on Morazins neck to a pair of ashes and gossamer wings.

....

Morazin staggers back, aiming a final, weak fire blast-the poor beetles last thoughts are that since the attack did one damage exactly, even if he made his reflex save it would do at least 1 damage. He doesn't even get a roll to survive! This is bullsh...

*pssst*

Aftermath

Smoke continues to cloud the area, but the beetles are all in various states of dismember-eyes, wings, viscera-you name it. Anciano, given time to think, identifies one of the nasty things on a glance.

The switch to lower the water level remains unflipped, firmly stuck in the wall. The dead body, having suffering fire, water, rot and beetle ambush corpse explosion related damaged has seen better days-but perhaps something remains of the owners equipment.

Morazin is not looking so good, and has several badly bleeding beetles bites. Everyone else is more or less okay.
