Didn't something like that happen to La-Mulana?
Yeah - the remake is a lot better too, I'd say, since they culled some of the stupid shit and made all the fights better.  I did really enjoy Spelunky, so I might give the remake a go.

Oh hell yeah! One of the best games ever gets a remake? I'll buy five copies!

Because everyone has different tastes and interests.

Only mine are correct, though.

.. Buy the PC port of Console Remake of a free PC game?

More specifically: What makes this worth paying for compared to Spelunky?

Hi-def graphics, new secret levels, new enemies, new bosses, up to four player co-op, more in-depth stat tracking, player versus player arena modes, and maybe some other things I don't know I haven't played it.
Why is there only 1 thing that seems interesting in there ?

All of these things are great and I certainly don't mind paying for an upgraded version of a free game that I have played for 60+ hours.

I got it. It does look tons better than the old classic version.

You really have to laugh at some of the deaths in the game, but it's very rage-inducing. I can hardly get to the jungle.
When I get there I usually only survive 1 level. It's really hard :(

Practice and patience will get you through. You need to be really careful. It's weird, There is a certain mentality I think you need to be successful in the game and taking your time and being very calm and calculated is the best strategy. To be honest Rogue Legacy gives me more rage quits than Spelunky haha.

The good thing about spelunky is that way more often than not it's your fault you died, so you can learn from your mistakes and play carefully.

Plus, everytime you get to the Jungle level, you can give money to the tunnel guy, and at some point you can start at the Jungle level. And the same goes for the rest of the levels!

Yeap, the shortcut thing is what made me play this game 10 times more than if it weren't here !
Because I can tell you one thing, from all the YASD I had in Spelunky : I am really stupid :p

I don't think I'll be buying it for now. The delay is just too much. It's as if they were looking for some way to get some more bucks out of their catalogue and they found the perfect opportunity: an old, "small" indie game they had forgotten about lying in some drawer that they hadn't ported yet while they could have easily and which would still be warmly received by the PC audience.

What do you mean with delay? The last version of Spelunky on PC was released in December 2009, they used 2.5 years for porting and enhancing it to XBLA and another year for porting it back to PC (and to Vita and PS3). That's not too bad for a two-man team.
And their catalogue consists of Spelunky, it's the only game by Mossmouth. I doubt that they already forgot about it.

I really don't like the new PC version. The graphics are worse, the music is worse, there are a few more enemies (which are annoying), whipping pots doesn't kill the things inside them, tunnel guy doesn't consume treasure, just a maximum of one item per visit. Overall, the only nice feature is more damsel and character sprites, and I believe more items. I don't have a clue what is supposed to merit the time lapse, unless there's just a lot more end-game content.

I wasn't thinking of picking this up (after all, I thought to myself, I can just play the original PC version) but an extremely generous individual gifted me a copy out of the blue. Since then, I've found myself thoroughly enjoying the game.

It's not surprising, as I adored the original. Do I like this version more? It's hard to say, but I think after some consideration I would have to concede that the HD graphics, smoother animations, movement controls, and sound blending all add together to make for a more chilled and enjoyable experience. It's not a case of whether my preference is for pixel or HD graphics, but that my eyes and my mind seem to have to work less to absorb the scene and the feel of the game in this latest offering.

I'm sure I'd still have a lot of fun playing the original, but given the choice between the two, I would pick up and play the remake.

Mods are the only real sticking point (and it's a big one, I'll admit) but I hope that in the future the same level of support for the modding comunity will be offered.

I've started recording an Let's Play of the game, so if anyone is interested in comparing the new look and feel to the original, hopefully this LP link will help a little.

But as far as my two shiny pennies go, I feel happy recommending the game to any fans of the original, or the genre as whole :)

I confess I don't know much about how XBLA works, but I was talking about Microsoft. I was thinking the decision for the XBLA remake to be ported to PC belongs to them.
