inquire as to who owns the arena. The local nobility? Ask if she knows any more details about the events for the arena.
+1
Ask if there are any rumors of impending war. If there aren't, taking some time with City Guard can give our country bumpkin some experience and contacts that he can use for his eventual goal of gaining title.

Ask about who owns the surrounding land, and if there are places to hunt or trap game nearby where you wouldn't be considered a poacher.

...

When the women is gone, strike up conversations with the patrons in nearby booths of you suspect to be merchants, see if any of them are hiring guards.

Thinking about what she said, I'd say we join the guard for a three month shift. Assuming we timeskip between major incidents and encounters. We should focus more on training, making friends with our fellow guards, and saving money than actually doing our job. When we are done we have a bit of money and will be better in combat, and then we can start our quest for nobility in earnest.

A job working for a merchant as a guard would also be good. We could learn a bit of the trade while we work, and perhaps get a discount on goods as well.

"I get the feeling that info will help me a lot, so thanks. However I have a few more questions to ask if you don't mind, first off I wanna focus on the arena, who actually owns the arena and how are things handled there like recruiting new fighters and matches?"

You ask between mouthfuls of the beef stew, and taking swigs from your mug, the woman smiles at you as she takes a look out over the common room to insure everything is in order before replying,

"The owner of the arena is a man named Yarlith, he's a very successful merchant come across the Dragon's Eye far to the south to make a name for himself as an arena master here in Nocte. I've talked to the man a time or two, and both times primarily about that arena as its completion is sure to boost business and people in this part of the kingdom and he's told me a fair amount about how he's gonna run the place.

For recruiting all I know is he's taking every man to volunteer as a gladiator, or a Ti'eth as he puts it since it seems his people have a fair amount of respect for those who risk life and limb in the arena. Those people he does hire as these Ti'eth are going to be paid on a per match basis, the lowest paying matches are the duels or fights to first blood as we prefer to call them, and those only pay any real amount of money if you win.

One above that in pay are the beast fights where a gladiator, or gladiators, go head to head with animals, creatures, and beasts from all around the world more obviously of course these jobs only pay if you win, because if you lose you're most likely dead already. Then highest of all are the death matches, generally it puts his hired gladiators up against armed criminals in fights to the death, real potential for money there but you're putting your life on a very thin line.

Of course there are also the special events he'll host from time to time, like the opening ceremony will have several such of those, and depending on the event the pay will vary but he assured me to a common man the pay would be a fortune though he didn't say anything about what they might be. So if you feel like putting your neck on the line you can sign up for a bout as a gladiator, of course you only have to do matches you want to do, but who knows what refusing or avoiding matches would do to your fans who would also be another source of income. Now what do you wanna know next?"

You take a moment to think over your next questions as you finish the last of the stew, taking another drink of ale you answer,

"What can you tell me about the local nobility besides this Baron Oakcrest?"

"There is not much to it really in these parts, but all together there are three other local nobles besides Lord Oakcrest. The first, and most pressing of them is Lady Elane Snow who controls the regions to the north from here to the Sleeping Forest, she recently set a mandate to double her lands standing army though no one seems to know why.

After that there is Sir Parish Balmark who controls the lands south of the city from the Artok's Pass on the border to the White River to the west, he is an aging knight but the people of his lands love him greatly and he has quite a bit of sway here in the city. Finally, there is Lord Henry Ralson, or the Snake as people call him, he's a greedy and silver tongued bastard though his people put up with him because he protects them from the war parties of the Sleeping Wood's tribes."

"And are there any hints of war in the near future?"

"Not that anyone in this region is aware of, while tensions with Tarth are high the only thing we ever get from that is the occasional border skirmish, and the rare attempt from Tarth to take the Red Fortress which bars Artok's Pass. Other then that the only disputes we get are those caused by crime, a few battles between rival Mercenary Companies, and the war parties from the Sleeping Forest.

All in all this region is fairly peaceful, though if you happen to be up for some travel signing up with a trade caravan as a guard wouldn't be to bad for ya. You'd get to see more of the region that is for sure, but you'd have to watch out for the tribals, they've been hitting more caravans then usual in the past two or so years. Now if you'll excuse me I gotta get back to the kitchen, hope you liked the food, and I have a room for ya on the house, 3C on the top floor."

With that she goes scurrying off through the growing crowd, from the looks of it the place is getting more packed by the minute, so what now?

Go to the arena. Ask what kind of special matches are being offered to commemorate the opening.

Your food finished you push yourself up from the booth, and force your way towards the door to the Easy Lass, you have to push a few people out of the way but you get through the crowd faster than the first time. Taking a look around you notice a handful of patrons have left ... and a handful of the serving girls as well, that explains something about the name it seems. Throwing the door open, and stepping out into the street beyond you join the throng of people moving into the city as you take another look around, what you are dozens of houses made of stone and thatch with the businesses like inns being predominately built of wood and tiles.

It takes a while, but you finally arrive at the arena with the crowd that you had joined dwindled down to a handful of travel worn souls holding weapons and packs as they trek towards the arena itself. The arena towers above you, a massive six story structure of granite with three archways interspersed along its side to allow entrance to its fans, in between two of those archways lies a set of iron bound doors the size of a man with two guards to either side and old withered man sitting at a table with parchment and pen in hand. Walking up to join the small line in front of the table you wait your turn as the man writes down each entrants name, takes a small fee, and signs them up as a gladiator.

When it comes your turn the man looks up and scoffs as he speaks,

"And does the peasant boy with his father's sword wish to join the arena in search of money? Unlike the others I can't let you just pay a fee to sign up, Yarlith's orders says any hopefuls like you gotta agree to a match with Yarlith overseeing it before you can join. And you gotta do it the day you sign up, so what say you boy? Brave enough to continue or did you wet yourself already?"

Check pants for wetness, confirm or deny based on the findings.

Hm.

Ask more about Yarlith, specifically if he's an exceptional warrior.

You guys won't fight Yarlith, he'll be overseeing the match, as in deciding what you go up against, how well you do, etc.
