Head to the Arena. We could use a bit more coin and fame to get started.

Until we prove ourself, I doubt we will get matched up against anybody much better than us. They think we are just a lowly peasant. In reality we are a lowly peasant with a steel sword and some idea of how to use it. If we can buy a sickle, cheap mace, or other peasant weapon, and hide our sword, we can hustle our first oppoent: Appear as helpless as anybody else before pulling out a proper sword.

No to City Guard, because they stay at home, guarding cities. Maybe some sort of investigations and patrols, but still.

No to the Arena, because all we know about swords is that they work by sticking the pointy end into things you want to kill. Keep it in mind, because we may need money later.

So, C. You always find quests at inns.

E. Ask the local beggars for information on the current situation, repeat with merchantmen, priests and other people you can find.

Standing Votes:
City Guard - 2
Arena - 2
Inn - 1
Ask around for information - 1

I'd like to point out you can inquire about jobs at both the City Guard and the Arena without actually having to take them, any who I'll wait a for a few more hours before updating. Perhaps we'll get a tie breaker.

Find some giant rats to level up our sword skill on. There's gotta be someone around here that inexplicably needs to be provided with ten dead rats. Maybe a sausage maker?

Seriously, though, let's try the inn. Need to get a few companions. Loners get nowhere, and inns are great places to find other restless souls. Let's look for some other ambitious young lads out to make their fortunes. I'm reminded how the Romance of the Three Kingdoms begins. Let's not rest until we've sworn eternal brotherhood to some other enterprising young blades.

Then, a good party formed, let's go to the guard captain and ask if there's a bounty on the deserters. Getting stuck with guard duty is a boring way to stagnate, but this will get us noticed, if we show up leading a group and can help the captain with a real actionable problem.

Deciding against wandering around the city any longer, and risking yourself along with your purse you step out from the alleyway and enter the inn right in-front of you. Its a cozy enough establishment called Easy Lass, inside the common room is fairly packed with workers of all sorts sitting at the tables dicing, drinking, or harassing the closest serving girls. Meanwhile some seemingly more reputable people sit in the booths lining the wall, a collection of what you can only assume to be less successful merchants and their guards, though you manage to find an empty booth in the back easily enough. Sliding into the seat you push your pack underneath the table with the hilt of your sword close at hand in case you need it.

After a few minutes pass one of the serving girls comes over to you, "Anythin' I can get for you?"

You take out a few coppers and toss them down onto the table saying you'd like a mug of ale and the best dish the chef could make, then taking a few more out you place them down and ask if perhaps there was anyone who could fill you in on whats happening in the area. The girl gives you a smile, and scoops the coppers into a pouch, she then slings it around her neck and tells you your food will be a few minutes before weaving her way through the tables, swatting away stray hands as she goes.

You don't wait all that long in the end as a slightly older woman with light brown hair, and a stocky build comes to your table with a bowl in one hand and a mug in the other. Setting them down on the table she slides into the booth across from you,

"Eat up before it gets cold, I understand your new to the city or just returned one so let me welcome you to Brightdown, anyway my name is Catelyn and I'm the owner of this establishment. I cook, take care of the place, and even help out people like you when I can, so if there's anything I can do for you I'd be more then happy to help, for the right price of course.

Brightdown is one of the few prosperous border cities of the nation Nocte, it lies on the border between Nocte and the Empire of Tarth to the east, and its known widely for the rich mines and the underground part of the city that give it its name. The current lord is Baron Oakcrest, he's a good enough man but he sets the import taxes to high, forbids drunks in the inner part of the city, and is strict as can be so the people don't hold any great love for him. Crime is nearly gone because of him sure enough, but he recently let a few mercenary companies set up manses in or near the city so lately there have been more then a few disappearances yet no one can tell who is responsible.

More importantly if you're looking for work there are three places to go in the city, the City Guard's recruitment hall, the White Crow Guild hall, or the arena that's about to open up. The City Guard aren't as strict s they used to be so you can sign up for three month stints nowadays, and those that do get a small bonus payment at the end of their service time, of course they have to make an agreement to join the lord's forces if he makes a call to war. The White Crows are a respectable group in these parts of Nocte, they hire pretty much anyone whose willing and sent them out to fulfill contracts that the people of the region send. Finally, the arena is supposed to be opening in a few days and its going to a pretty big success I'd say, of course most of the fights they hold will be to first blood or against animals, but there are rumors going around about mock battles between criminals and the arena's men.

That's a fairly rough outline of the stuff going on in this town, anything in particular you wanna know about or do you wanna get to your meal?"

Ask about how the Arena works, and the quality of the City Guard's training.

City guard training could be useful, but I don't like the risk of being sent on a campaign. Not one bit. Being a mercenary sounds nice, but depending on how contracts are assigned/accepted, we could land ourselves in a situation we can't handle and end up being wounded.

The arena is new, so there'll be plenty of other hopefuls for us to practice on, and they can't have too terribly dangerous beasts just yet, as it has only just been built, not to mention if we are pitted against normal people, that we've got a great chance of making it out in one piece (first blood, so the old hag says). But then again the owners might be planning some sort of spectacle for the grand opening, which could mean more danger, but it certainly holds fame for us if we're victorious.

We should play it safe for now and inquire as to who owns the arena. The local nobility? Ask if she knows any more details about the events for the arena. How would we go about involving ourselves in these events? Can we anticipate what we end up fighting, or do contestants simply have to deal with whatever comes out of the gate? No doubt they just grab as many people as possible and then organise the events from there.

I say we should thank the lady, finish our meal, and head to the arena. We can scout out the hopefuls to see if any of them look friendly enough to talk to or ask training from. Who knows, maybe we could make a few friends there. If all of them are unfriendly or refuse, we could at least observe one or two matches to get a rough knowledge of how the arena battles work.
