Jagged Alliance Online
« on: June 05, 2013, 08:20:41 pm »

Soooo...

Anyone has any idea what the hell this is like? First time I've ever heard of this.

Is it like, the remake with multiplayer tacked-on? A faithful conversion of the old one? A game engine with absolutely nothing to do with JA, but that uses the name for sales?

There's really little info out there or my Google-Fu is weak today.

(It's Free2Play BTW, just too lazy and my hard drive is too full to install any more stuff for now)

EDIT: I think only the PvP is free.

I was in the beta for a while and it was pretty bad. It has become a little better, but it's not exactly a gem. Paying the $27 for one of the two packages opens up more than 100 missions if I remember correctly. I just simply found the cash shop was too much of a necessity for me to enjoy it.

I've tried it.  The game is on a free to play model.  Browser Game.  You can pick up mercs from the JA game.

Basics is it is pretty much like a 'tactics' game.  Per mission, not open world.  Your base camp, you can play house and upgrade it.

I haven't gone as far as unlocking/trying out PvP.  (Things may have changed from the last time I played, like a year or so ago.

I was skeptic. The screenshots didn't look too good.

Probably will give this one a 'pass' 8)

Ditto.  The problem is that they've recreated the boredom that was "Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games."  When I tried it this out over a year ago, it was a webclient based game (Unity maybe?) where you run a mercenary team that accepts global missions.  Except all these missions were seemingly unrelated (guerillas in the forest... then drug dealers in an alley... then bikers in a bar). And worst of all, I think I remember these missions being timed, but don't hold me to that.

So take out the narrative hook of the campaign... the open-world aspects of global map... the freedom to take a mission as stealthy/aggressive as you want... enter a mission sector from a completely different side... and of course, no charm via voice-acting or music.  The game was just chronicly uninteresting.

Maybe they've fixed it since a year ago, but back then I wasn't smelling any potential.

When will developers learn that F2P is not a demo? Do like Guild Wars 2 or Vindictus, and make the cash shop an awesome addition; not a complete necessity.

Started the game, finished tutorial level 2. Got bored. Game crashed, whatever.
