Fallout 3 would have been a great game if it was set 20 years after the war instead of 200 and the BoS was renamed the Maryland national guard.  I seriously wonder if they just stopped their research at "post apocolypse" and didn't realize the "200 years later" part until the game was done.

But the basic idea for Fallout 3 was pretty terrible. Irradiated water troubles 200 years after the war, when you've dealt with a water problem like 100 years prior in the West, and there were places like Vault City and NCR following that. It's like the writers had no idea for a plot so they went with a mish-mash of plot points from FO1 and 2 that make no sense with the time and place they decided to go with.
I agree, the original premise of FO3 was bad. The Pitt was interesting, but far too short.

It's true though really the only reason Bethesda is popular on the PC is because of mods, if they didn't give out modding support I guarantee you that any PC interest would soon drop out. But they do make quite a lot of money from the console crowd, and that's why they're blatantly trying to shift their focus to them. Whether or not they're really going to make money from the console crowd in the long run is questionable, but they seem fixed to try their best at it anyways.
I concur about the mods.

Well, consoles have pretty much effed themselves with the next generation (No backwards compatibility and very few games? Yeah, 40 games for the PS4 sounds impressive, but if they had the entire PS2 game library along with it, the number of PS4 games would shrivel pathetically when faced with such a monolith) and a lot of developers are seriously considering removing their support. Whether Bethesda will be among the ones who do so is yet to be seen.

I'll add this here. Probably add it to the original post as well. Whether it does indeed being Fallout 4 or not (which again, seems really likely)...it looks like (and it was probably obvious anyway) that it won't be released till next year at the earliest. That is expected really. So no surprise there.

Developers will always produce for consoles as long as they remain the 'casual' gamers hardware of choice. Using a PC requires time and knowledge. Using a Playstation or Xbox is a simple as putting the disk in and waiting for the device to do all the work for you.

It really just depends on how interested you are in the setting. As someone interested in the setting, I love to see it expanded and fleshed out more and can't possibly consider a sequel to be a waste based on dynamic alone. Sure, it'd be great if they made the game mechanics somehow amazing (I really don't see any alternatives presented to the rather fun base) but telling more stories, assuming they're better than fallout 3, is enough for me.

I would like to see FO 4 in someplace like Missouri, with a huge map. What I think they could do with this is make the game centralize along the river. Not like the other games, but focus on a trade network between Jefferson City, St. Louis, and Kansas City. Jefferson City would be a small, semi powerful, very rich city, kinda like Venice (Maybe?). Kansas City will be a two faction split, not in a conventional war, but fighting with assassinations, and other different, sabotage style of warfare. And St. Louis would have many gangs fighting over the main city, with one powerful group holding the coast of the river, controlling the trade. And you could also travel to the landlocked towns to see how they develop in comparison. And instead of having a standard, main quest, You can do major, mega quests, which will have a dynamic effect on the world. Say one time you help clear out a group of river pirates from Jefferson city, and say this takes a few hours cause they are supported by the guys who you helped JC fight earlier, BUt in another game, you clear them out in a few minutes because they are a group of poor farmers who were repressed by say... Columbia, who dabbles in slave trade with Kirksville, and has been raiding farms to provide slaves for restoration work because a gang you helped blew up part of an important wall. And this is all effected by things that you do in the game, and each time you start the game there is a new starting situation. Maybe 4-5. Which also help decide how the game plays out.

TLDR: Wont happen...

One thing I wonder is how they are going to keep the vaults relevant... I mean FO3 basically made them permanently irrelevant by making their entire purpose now superfluous.

Probably won't happen, but looks like a good idea for a major mod. Of course, getting a team good, dedicated and pacient enough (for this would take years, see Tamriel Rebuilt) is a challenge in and of itself.

Fallout is sort of a series where each sequel is more pointless then the last... They aren't entirely superfluous yet... but after Fallout 3... You pretty much have to make up realistic threats from out of your butt and invent reasons why America hasn't recovered yet.

I mean they have a water purifier and a LOT of garden of Eden Creation kits that work... AND they took out both of the major villains of the series permanently.

I don't think the fallout engine would be able to handle that however, the map, probably, but the different starts would be unlikely. However, one can always dream.

There's like... three GECKs in the series total. The Enclave and the Master were bad guys, sure, but they're not exactly the root cause of everything bad and terrible in the Fallout verse. That'd be like saying that after the Nazis and the Soviet Union, everything was okay forever. Besides, North America is a very big place and without a unified government, at best it's going to be like Europe as it is now: a series of smallish nations who are theoretically unified by an alliance, at worst it's going to be like Europe in the 1100s: a collection of feudal kingdoms fighting over each other without attempting to broker a true peace or make any cultural advancements.

Three that they had... and the Enclave were the root cause of everything bad and terrible in the fallout verse.

Without them the underlying problems can start to improve themselves and they can begin to collect the Gecks.

Quite literally the Enclaves destruction should mean much more.

I don't want to spoil too much but suffice it to say that they were the secret villains of the first game and the outright villains of the second and third. They instigated the entire series and were the cause of everything.

What is odd is the Enclave had a reason for doing what they were doing... but that goal was long lost.

I mean I guess you could have taken out a fake Enclave who were fooled by the real enclave.

I think I prefer The Remnants. They were a dying nostalgic union of a dead nostalgic faction based off a dead nostalgic nation.

Surprisingly it seems like the Enclave while being evil in every way were the only ones who came close to rebooting society. Brotherhood of Steel are a bunch of xenophobic tinheads more interesting in weapons than society. NCR is a massively corrupt and over expanding bureaucracy. Caesar's Legion were united under a single leader and would collapse with his death. Everything else is either tribal or glorified city states with limited room for expansion.
