Why are ducks so tiny?
« on: June 05, 2013, 09:34:39 am »

I wasn't getting any meat from ducks. A check of the raws showed them as size 1000. That's the third of the size of a chicken.

What.

I know there isn't a lot of meat on them but seriously. I've since corrected this in my own raws and made them the size of chickens.

Edit :

A quick poke about in the other raws and I find this. Rabbit, size 500. Cavey, Size 800.

Since when were rabbits smaller than guina pigs?

Are you sure it is not te baby? A baby duck is smaller than a chicken, and a baby rabbit is actually smaller than a guinea pig.

I also noticed that elves are dwarf sized.
I like this for the ability to wear stolen elf crap,
I hate it because I like my elves tall and snooty, so I can dislike them easier.

My theory is that they're only pretending to be the Tolkienesque, one-with-nature elves to throw us off the track of their delicious cookies.

DF elves are much more akin to the Bosmer from the Elder Scrolls.
http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Bosmer
They are even cannibalistic!

OT: Yeah, it seems ducks are unusually tiny. Then again, DF has always had some issues when it has come to creature scale  :P

To make matters worse, any ducks you have that were born in the fortress, are even smaller than normal.

I knew about the size bug for animals, I didn't realise it affected fortress born dorfs as well  :o

But I'm very sure these are the adult sizes, it's hard to get them confused. Madness I say!

Note that, these are volumetric data, not tallness. Anyways, does the game track the height of the creatures?

In the sense of "this elf is 1.6 urists tall," no. All sizes in the game are by volume only (and when combined with density values for things, weight descends from volume). The closest it gets to tracking height is things like "Urist McWrestler is slightly short," which is relative to the species; so a dwarf described as "tall" might still be shorter than a human described as "slightly short."

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

So elves are tall and thin. Makes sense really, considering.

The beards also must also be accounted for when comparing dwarf vs elf volume.

What.

Note that you may be thinking of modern domestic ducks, which have been bred to be huge compared to their original wild brethren.

95% of the duck eaten in the US is the "American Pekin Duck" aka "Long Island duck", which has an average full-grown weight of 8 to 11 pounds, and a hull length of a foot or more.  These were further bred from already-domesticated ducks imported from China in 1873.

Their original wild ancestor is the Mallard, which weighs 1.6 - 3.5 pounds and has a hull length of about 6 inches (and is considered a medium-sized species of wild duck).

I've seen wild ducks, and about 1 pound of edible material is a meal to a normal person. People hunt wild mallards and eat them all the time.

I think one could say, that wild ducks are about as big as wild chicken depending on the races. While the domestic ducks are rather bigger then their chicken counterpart.

Talking of breeding - are genetics implemented? I believe I recall someone who wanted do to science on this branch of dwarven lore. It would give the game a whole new depth if one could breed animals for their size or in case of war animals aggressive behaviour...

Also all the extra info needed to do thid would fuck the fps even more - very dwarf fortress ;)

Interesting facts about ducks are accumulating, which amuses me greatly. However I would state that these are the ducks included in creatures_domestic and therefore it makes sense to me they'd be more chicken sized, if maybe a bit smaller. I actually corrected their adult size to 2800, rather than 3000. They are a bit smaller but not by a factor of three :)

Genetics in dwarf fortress would be hilarious. I'm not sure if things like the appearance modifiers are actually translated across. Would be awesome if they were though.
