What is SpyParty?
SpyParty is a spy game about human behavior, performance, perception, and deception. (shamelessly stolen from dev site)
It's a 1v1 game about observation, finesse and deceit. Sniper vs Spy is the first game mode but there are hints for more to come at another point. The developer is the talented Chris Hecker and he has some interesting ideas on game design as can be seen on this video http://vimeo.com/21558217

If there is enough interest I will hold a giveaway for this game and perhaps I can get the dev to come here and answer any questions, so please ask away, assuming it isn't answered by the FAQ http://www.spyparty.com/faq/#Will+there+be+other+modes+besides+just+two-player+Spy+vs.+Sniper%3F

Isn't that the guy who ruined Spore?

My understanding was that his involvement was primarily in texturing and animation for spore. From his liner notes"Cute vs. Science   Since it just seems to keep reanimating like a really bad zombie movie, even though it's been called nonsense by me, Executive Producer Lucy Bradshaw, and Will Wright, I will simply state clearly that at no point did I try to steer the game towards a simplistic, shallow, or casual design. Sigh. " Said liner notes can be found here: http://chrishecker.com/My_liner_notes_for_spore

Isn't that the guy who ruined Spore?

Dr. Wikipedia claims he had been working on Spore, particularly animations, and been blamed for Spore's rather unscientific vision of evolution, but it seems that it was the general attitude of most of the Spore team that preferred diversity in creations over, you know, making sense.

Quote from: Will Wright
We didn’t want there to be one ultimate design direction that the simulator was forcing all the creatures into.

As you can see from this quote, Maxis does not get evolution.

Err, what?  I won't gainsay the statement that "evolution" in Spore is kind of spotty compared to actual theories of evolution, but that quote doesn't do anything to support that.  Scientific evolution doesn't have a single ultimate design direction, either.  It merely expresses a trend towards optimization geared towards survival through natural selection and differentiation through speciation; it doesn't imply there is a single "ultimate" evolution, nor does evolution "force" anything.

I took that as a quote about min-maxing, not about evolution.

Exactly. Evolution does not work on level-up basis. And yet Wright believes that unless you make the creator as shallow as it eventually was, everyone would end up with one single ultimate design.

For instance, length and width of joints would affect how they would work, so, e.g. leg A gives 1 speed compared to leg B of the same length, which gives 2, but a long leg A is faster than a very short leg B, or creatures that look like they have some serious muscles in their arms would hit harder.

All of those were axed, because then you couldn't make creatures which are dramatically unfit to their environment, and Creature Creator ended up as a very accessible, if limited, version of Blender for J. Random Player.

Urr, hate to be a party pooper, but this stuff all belongs in a "Let's argue about the poor design of Spore" thread, not here. :P

On topic, somehow I haven't heard of this game. Looks pretty cool and I do need something to help me through the holiday...
My one complaint is how secretive the whole website is about what the game actually entails. I only learnt that from one of the reviews.

Seriously, have we not bitched enough about Spore for one lifetime?  It came out almost five years ago.

I checked my email when I saw this thread and boom!  If I'd waited three more days I would've lost my invite.

Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

Man, this game is freaking genius! I've heard of this one for awhile now and never really got the concept until I saw some matches. This is really something else and I can't wait to play it. Watch the videos from Northernlion they are pretty entertaining.

I got my beta invite to this a couple days ago.  Haven't done much more than poke around at the practice mode (which is basically a controls tutorial minus the tutorial).

The idea is pretty slick though.

If you haven't seen the tournament finals yet, I highly recommend it (skip to 22:00 to watch actual gameplay).

I love any game where the main mechanic is paranoia. Right now this plays out like a 1vs1 Trouble in Terrorist Town and that's a very good thing.
