Simple question about FB
« on: June 05, 2013, 12:22:34 am »

Can you butcher a poisonous forgotten beast and eat it without killing 97% of your fort population? I stopped one of my dwarf from butchering the corpse of one once because I feared for the worst.

Was I right?

I don't think the meat will be poisonous even if the Beastie has poisonous blood although getting it might be a pain.  Fairly sure that in the odd world of dwarf fortress meat has no blood in it and butchering produces no blood.

The syndromes are only present in the extract or blood materials. Probably.

I agree.  There should be an option at the butcher to save blood, requiring a barrel.  Then we could get stuff like Barrel of Giant Sperm Whale Blood [35145]

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I kill and eat poisonous FBs all the time. But I do use a cavein trap to deal with them, which produces a blood spatter at worst.

If the FB corpse is surrounded by pools of blood or extract, getting at it may be tricky. You can clean a tile by building something on it (eg. bridge, furniture, farm plot), but a dwarf has to walk into the same tile as an object to pick it up. For that you can pour buckets of water onto the tile until the FB and the contaminant are separated, or let the butcher walk through and deal with the contaminated footwear later.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I put dwarven bathtubs at the dwarf entrances to my FB "processing" chambers. That way they're coated with water when they enter the contaminated area, which prevents them from picking up other coatings until the water evaporates. And if the water evaporates that quickly, I have other problems. Problems of the !!Forgotten Beast Corpse!! variety.

Will dwarf cross deep water if no other pathing are given? What are the basic knowledge required to do a dwarves bath?

I believe bathtubs only need to be 2 deep at shallowest to prevent evaporation, though even a 1-deep would be able to coat a dwarf entirely because... because.
