Amber decorations in generated tombs?
« on: June 04, 2013, 05:06:53 am »

While exploring the barrows/tombs with my somewhat overpowered adventurer, I went through the usual process of looting everything in sight, and found a rather interesting iron shortsword in a bag...is amber just in the game, but dwarves are too dumb to find it, or is it just randomly added and is not in the actual game, like centaurs as myths?

Edit - here's the picture.

Open DF, press Alt+PrntScrn, open Microsoft Paint, press ctrl-v, save.
Open internet, go to any image sharing site (imgur, imageshack, photobuck, img.ie, whatever), upload onto the site.
Open forums, press the little image button, copy-paste the image link in between then html tags.

Amber is treated like Pearls.  It exists in the code, its something with a material definition, it's just not obtainable via normal means.  It lacks a workshop production because of slight quirks.  It's very similar to obtaining barrels of Badger Blood or Grasshopper Brains from the caravan - it exists as an item, it's just impossible to get unless the game generates it as part of a set of items.

Amber, Coral and some other materials exist in the code, but i only have seen them in FB. I did't know they could appear in decorations.

Thanks for the help, Girlinhat. By the way, is there a way to mod the raws so that it appears (unrealistically) sparsely underground as a gem, somewhat like petrified wood?

yeah, probably not too hard if you use one of the other gems as a template.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

It'd be very easy to simply copy-paste Petrified Wood and rename it to Amber.

Ooh! Or set Amber to show up as a gem within clusters of Petrified Wood!

[INORGANIC:AMBER]
[USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:STONE_TEMPLATE]
[TILE:15][IS_GEM:amber:STP:OVERWRITE_SOLID][DISPLAY_COLOR:7:7:1][MATERIAL_VALUE:20]
[ENVIRONMENT_SPEC:PETRIFIED_WOOD:CLUSTER_ONE:1] wasn't sure "inserting" a small cluster of amber inside a small cluster of petrified wood would go over
[STATE_COLOR:ALL_SOLID:AMBER]
[STATE_COLOR:ALL:AMBER]
[STATE_NAME_ADJ:SOLID:amber]
[STATE_NAME_ADJ:SOLID_POWDER:ground amber]
[STATE_NAME_ADJ:SOLID_PASTE:amber paste]
[STATE_NAME_ADJ:SOLID_PRESSED:pressed amber]
[BASIC_COLOR:6:0]
[BUILD_COLOR:6:0:0]
[TILE_COLOR:7:7:1]
[MATERIAL_VALUE:2]
[SPEC_HEAT:1000]
[HEATDAM_POINT:11000]
[SOLID_DENSITY:1200]
[LIQUID_DENSITY:1200]
[ITEMS_DELICATE]

If you paste that into inorganic_stone_gem.txt I think you should see single tiles of amber showing up in clusters of petrified wood.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Clusters of one inside small clusters are already in the game -- it's how the coloured diamonds (not faint yellow or light yellow) and star gems appear. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding the comment, since you probably got that line from the rare gems anyway...

Amber won't appear very often with those settings though. I'm a little fuzzy on how the frequency works, but it seems to be more across biomes than individual small clusters. Usually I have either no rare gems at all on site, or they appear in many of the small clusters. There was one site where I had a grand total of three green diamonds, but that may have been due to that biome occupying one embark tile or less and not having the space for any more gems.

Same goes for the small clusters that those rare gems appear in. I've had sites with layers and layers of kimberlite, and not a single diamond of any colour anywhere.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
