Aegis: New Frontiers
« on: June 02, 2013, 01:06:55 pm »

Introduction:

Three worlds twirl in space, following the path Fate and Time has anointed for them. Like a massive clock, ticking down to a date millennia away, when the universe will end, when the thread of Time and Space finally ceases to be.

These three worlds, ageless, mighty in their power, have been humbled by the tech of a little species known as man. What was once desert has become a great jungle. What was once a storm-wracked world of conflict has become peaceful and calm. What was once dead has become alive with dust storms and marshes.

Leading the fates of men and women in their endeavors is the Aegis Union of Free Settlements, which, with force of arms, struck down the last great empire, and executed its emperor after turning the entire population into his jury.

Now, almost three hundred years later, the Terraforming fleet has disappeared after completing its decades long work of turning Wesir and Tycho into habitable, pleasant planets. Colonists flocked to these worlds to escape the stinking overpopulation of Aegis Settlements, and to make a new name and life for themselves on these new worlds.

Newsbreak with Keith Evermen and Lisa Davids.

"Greetings ladies and gentlemen! We welcome you back to the News Break Channel. News all day, every day." Keith Everman starts, adjusting his papers, "The Colonial representatives have vowed to cease all taxes to the Union if the Union does not withdraw the ability for the High Admiral to land on their planets and use their ports to harbor in without paying. "
He pauses, briefly
"A public trial is scheduled for later this month to see if the fleet violates the Writ of Rights as laid down by the founders."

Lisa cuts in, "A string of murders has rocked the Capital, as of late, Micheal Murry with the details; Micheal?"

The feed shifts to a young man standing outside a street corner, near some yellow police-tape and flashing sirens, "This is the third victim this week, Lisa. A young lady, name pending release by her family, has been killed here, in the lower section of the Capital Settlement. The victims have been of all genders and all orgins, with no clear defining motive."

They go through various, unimportant tidbits of news, such as a young woman suing OASIS, and the internal ministry, for mental anguish she was put under when working there. She specifically blames the director, in all this.

The stock market is up: 5% over last quarter and Wesir Plantation Grown Coffee stocks have skyrocketed in price due to a shortage cause by bandits.

The Solar Scoop, with Cheshire Palmroyal

"...and tonight we sit down with Helios Mynocki. A self proclaimed 'prophet' of the Nai'an Supremacy movement, leader of the Aer Clan, and admitted Raider, and in his own words-freedom fighter. I'm currently in an undisclosed location and...I was surprised you agreed to my interview. From my prison cell, no less."

The tall man with the impressive muscles, tanned skin and ice-chip eyes smiles pleasantly. He's wearing a fresh Raider garment-reactive desert camo, though unactivated at the moment. He's quite handsome, in his own way...if, a bit cold looking.

The four-winged flag of the Aer Clan is on display behind him. They seem to be in a bunker of sorts.

"Why not? If I intend to get the attention of those in power, who better to appeal to then the people themselves?

And, I apologize for your rough treatment. I am glad to see they did not injure you. Rest assured, you will be returned to your family as soon as safe passage can be arranged. There are many Nai'ans not as honorable as I, nor as kind to women reporters caught intruding on their lands."

"...Let's answer the accusations, first. They say you're a terrorist-a murderer. A Warlord, even."

"I do not mind what you call me. Everyone has a name for something they don't understand.

Is it terrorism, to keep my people fed during blights, and warm during cold night?
Is it murder, if the people I kill come to pillage my world without permission?
Am I Warlord for keeping peace and order in our lands? To bring my people together, and stop the needless shedding of blood?

If mere titles are the price to do these things, I will gladly pay them.

Nai is a difficult planet to live on. It is a wondrous place, but a dangerous place. What you called a failed Terraforming, a wasteland...it's a land I grew up in. It's my home. It has it's own bountiful life and a harsh beauty all it's own-if only you could see through my eyes.

I would not have it any other way."

"But, is that justification for what you've been...accused of? The government of Aegis has attempted negotiations in the past. You don't deny this? Wouldn't it be easier to work with us?"

The man seems to express genuine regret for a moment.

"When a true leader steps forward, and meets me man to man, I will listen to them fairly. A Nai'an does not negotiate idly-if we do not have what we need, there is suffering. For you it is...exciting news reports, the shifting of mineral stocks and such. The reality on the ground is we live day to day on the edge. Medicine, food, weapons to defend ourselves-all are needed. What is the promise of a politician to the empty belly of a child? Or a mother dying sick with the Ghoulscratch Fever?

Wind and words. When I see action being taken to recompense us for our suffering and make amends, I will negotiate with them fairly.

Too many of my kind have tried to broker peace and ended up working in your mines, twenty hours a day, no breaks, little water, minimal human contact-when one is sick or injured, they do not live long. Those who die are not even given proper burials-I will show you the mass graves, if you like-within the very shadow of your corporate towers. As it is too all usual for what you call 'prison laborers', even if their crime is no more than tossing a stone at an armored vehicle as it rolls over your home. Ask your elected representatives. We do not ask for sympathy. We merely ask you to learn the truth for yourself, and then judge us fairly."

"Prison Laborers? That sounds...abominable. Do you have more evidence of this?"

Helios nods somberly.

...

Chesire Palmroyal was indeed, freed about a week later. She reported being well taken care of, in good health and high spirits-even to forging something of a personal relationship with the infamous Clan Leader. She has agreed to write Helios Mynocks autobiography, entitled 'The Red Wings of Freedom'

THe polarized windows of the office were opaque, blocking out the bright sunlight from the outside.
The large desk was cleqr of any items, save for a single monitor showing recent news and an open file, laid out in front of Walter.

He silently looked thourgh the documents and names in the file, pondering his options and cracking the numbers in his head. Market was up, credit should be plenty. Economy was in an upswing and no doubt people were interested in more than just news, although it was about time that market was cornered and monopolized. UNN was not ashamed about its goals on Aegis and colonies were yet to feel the corporate breath.

"Nai, Helios... and bunch of other savages..this is shaping up to be fun."

He closed the file and got up to get his jacket. The ride home would be probably uneventful as usual, but he enjoyed the sight of the city as well as the quiet time that he got, alone in the car.

Request meeting with a government official in regard to business plan on Nai (Az/DH/NPC, whoever gets to me first).
Investigate network ratings on Aegis - is there anyone to buy, or station/newspaper to beat.
Hire investigative "journalist" to get a scoop on the murder story in the lower settlement.
Check Wesir Coffe stocks price.
Check prices for installation of comsat stations on Tycho and Wesir

Alfred reached up a hand and ensured his mask was fixed in place as a group of men walked in, six in all and three of them being his captains as he liked to call them. The first one in was a little weedy man, almost rat-like in looks whose name was Thomas though many simply called him 'Rat'. The second man is a worn looking man who appears to be in his middle years wearing a cheap suit who they all called Stone, his signature revolver nowhere to be found. Finally, the last member of the 'council' is a tall aged man with graying hair and milky grey eyes whose name is Fellini.

They all quickly take their seats at the smooth worn oak table, and turn their attention to 'Shade' as he leans forward and starts talking, his voice distorted by a voice changer making his voice purely mechanical,

"Well gentlemen lets get down to business, there is a lot of work to be done over the next few months if we're to get a strangle hold on the crime life of Aegis. Rat you and your boys are to get my information on every gang on the planet, I wanna know their names, their locations, and their numbers if possible.

Stone, I want you to take look around for as many gangers, thugs, thieves, and outcasts you can find to see if you can scrounge me up an actual force of muscle. Fellini I'd ask you to look into the Internal Affairs head but I don't want you doing it alone so for now wait until I can hire some help for you, that's all so get to work."

With that 'Shade' gets up and walks through a thick iron door behind his chair, shutting and barring it behind him, well time to get to work ...

Investigate the standing gangs, and any information regarding them on Aegis.
Look for volunteers and those interested in joining Crimson Night. (Recruit a Basic Regiment if possible)

Helios rode along one of well driven dirt roads in his armored jeep-the gunner atop, lazily turning the mounted flak turret toward a small family who had wisely moved their horse and carriage to the side of the road.

Helios smiled at them as his convoy went past, but there was no humor in it. The little girl buried her face in her mothers skirt and cried.

....

The Warlord mounts his horse to full gallop. Smoke and screams on the air. The ring of spears, and auto-rifles being drawn, flung, fired. The trade caravan never had a chance. He would never know why they thought they could get past his forces. But by the time he arrives, he does not need even bloody his blade.

He does not see the slaughter, does not care. He is merely looking out into the wastes of Nai, scowling.

Nai was very much the same, mile after mile of desert hardpan. Desert wasn't even the proper word-even a desert had life. Helios hated every inch of it, but there was no escape. It was everywhere-every direction. Sand, rocks, the occasional bones of man and machine. Scorching his mind with it's blinding, unthinking idiocy. No patterns, nothing. He wished he had never been born here, and feared that he when he died here the last thing he would see would be this horrible planet, stretching in every direction, swallowing his vision.

The planet itself was empty, broken from it's very inception. A true wasteland. The air was thin and difficult to breathe for normal people. Those like Helios had developed strong lungs in the generations they had resided here. He would likely have to wear a breathing mask, if he ever left. The very basics of life-insects, birds, plants-had never taken root. As such, only starving desperate things could survive. The only use here was the metal ores hidden under her surface...plenty of it, in fact. It was the only reason anyone cared about this place. Her people were much the same. Too stubborn to die, too stubborn to surrender to the Aegis government which they knew only wanted them for mine labor. Taking what they wanted was their life.

A fusillade of shots ring out, bringing him back. Oh, he hadn't exactly ordered them to kill the prisoners. The price of inattention.

...

A small bunker, deep below the hated desert.

The Warlord examined his dossiers. Rivals, troop movements, supplies.

He had reluctantly realized, some time ago, he would need more support for his ambitions...which was difficult, considering his situation...but, all things in time. Today was a more personal visit. Cheshire Palmroyal was quite generous with her affections. He trusted her-not because, she was a particularly trustworthy person, but because she was a professional. A keen business sense. He was using her as much as she was using him, and they were honest at least to each other. Helios admired the integrity of that.

...

Another persons light breathing beside him, a distinct softness. The Warlord feels a momentary calm looking at the night sky, thinking about her.

Sometimes Helios wishes for the old days, like any man does.

Flying so high, he can't even see the hated wasteland anymore. A child's dream come true. Watching as shiny bits of shrapnel bounces off his canopy window. Pulling out of a low dive using all his stregth, hearing the skitter of stones rattling against the hull as he skirts the hardpan. The momentous feel, the awesome power, of a pair of guns firing full auto-shaking the entire craft, his entire body-laughing as he sowed destruction. The smell of burnpower and cordit calming him, like a painkiller. And then...back on the ground, feeling like a God among men. Laughing, drinking, loving...sometimes with the very people he had just fought to death in the air. They were able to look each other in the eye with a smile, and say 'Ah, I'll get you next time'. Then, they would toast to those who had fallen from the sky. Those were the good days.

There was a simplicity, an honesty in that he would always miss. He was no longer a mere warrior. He had...responsibility. Oaths. A duty. To whom? Not to this hated planet, no...maybe to it's people...

He eventually falls into a light sleep, and dreams of a great blue ocean he's never seen in life.

Shootandrun

[8] The construction of your fleet is going well, nearly exceptionally so. You’re personally shown around one of the frigates, then the Judgement. The construction workers are fast, efficient, and intelligent, obviously well-trained members of the ministry of construction or industry.

[4] However, Tycho is halting several important parts needed with red tape and bureaucracy. They’ll arrive, but it’ll be far later than needed, and set the completion time back a few months at most.

[6] The crew training grounds is well-run, not exactly as efficient as the workers, but most of the cadets were only recruited this year, and are still being shaped into the future pilots and crew of The Judgement and other ships.

Spoiler: High Admiralty (click to show/hide)

Ardas

[10] Your company is going wonderful! Great, it’s income is rising steadily and improving quickly. However, this draws the eye of several agencies involved with taxing corporations. Since your main broadcasting satellite is in Union space-space, they present you with a warrant to search your files, premises and income.

[100% (!?!?!)] Your news corporation is watched by a large percent of the population, your only competitor is the NewsFeed Channel, which has been around for far longer than your corporation. There’s a few indie papers out there, and indie stations, which you technically cannot take control of due to anti-trust laws.

[9] A young, bubbly blond reports for duty, informing you she can get the scoop on the murders, maybe even crack the case wide open. She needs money, though, 1(A) for…various expenses, so to speak.

[~]The price for a stock unit is currently 1(A) and will pay you back next quarter, if the price stays the same, 2(A).

[~]A comsat station on either of those planets main settlements, along with the sever relay networks would cost five Acredita, three acredita of resources and an engineering guild, corp or contractor willing to build said structure, perhaps by contract.

Taricus

[10] The other Nain clans have turned against one another in true Nain fashion, the Maros and Rasos clan slicing at each other’s throats bitterly, while the colonial troops with them form another faction, which continues to sweep across your lands.

[5] They stall at Crater Lake, several of their tanks having attempted to cross the body of dust and sand, thinking it a stable surface, and sinking for their efforts.

[10] Maros and Rasos BOTH send requests for aid, offering land and resources back to you from their raided treasury, in order to come to the aid of one or the other.

[1] Unfortunately, it seems that your two cities have abandoned you in an attempt to form their own clans.

Spoiler: Clan Tavash (click to show/hide)

Goldwrymgold

[3]  Back-taxes on Wesir reduce your treasury from 5a to 2a, cutting away most of your saved money.

[9] You own a single ship, a cargo freighter, with a large storage bay(which can carry three units of cargo) and a number of heavy guns. It wouldn’t do shit against a Union fleet, to be sure, but its hard to think that pirates wouldn’t have a rough time of trying to bully you into giving them your cargo.

[9] You’re currently heading towards Aegis, to drop off  two units of premium Wesir coffee, for which you will be paid 1(A) for delivery and fuel charges. Not the best price, and you could probably sell this stuff on the black market for much more.

Ghazkull

[9] You’re currently latched, quite securely, to an asteroid in the belt between Tycho and Aegis, near the trade route from Tycho to Synth.

[1] Unfortunately, some issue on Tycho with you being the last woman to be seen with, and argue with the shipping director of the docks there, and that shipping director later dying, quite suddenly. You left town before you heard, and now the Union has a bounty for dragging you in for questioning.

[1] Your ship is heavily damaged from smashing into the wreckage of another ship while attempting to board it. Two of the three cargo bays have been lost, and a number of dead crew have had to be chuted into the void of space.

DigitalHellhound

[3] The legal suite against you and resulting publicity of your organization has lowered its efficiency, as well as the recruits going into it. Your methods have driven a large amount of people to mental breakdown and your currently under investigation for mental disorders.

[8] Luckily the Internal Minister is a close friend, and quite nice to you…despite your lapses. But still is quite cross with your behavior and interactions with your workers. Her basic words were, quite simply, “Be nice or you’re going to Synth.”

[8] You have a few, loyal agents and a number of analysts and diggers on your team, although many seem strained by the hard work and low pay, but each and every one is a patriot and a populist, and would maybe be willing to die for you.

Spoiler: ASIS (click to show/hide)

Player:

[1] Your turf ain’t respected, your folks are getting shot down in broad daylight, and men and women diss you in front of you. Folk reckon your gang is too weak to actually enforce your turf, and they would be right. Most of your men laugh at your orders, some even back-talk you in public, and in private.

[9] Luckily, your HQ still stands on some primo ground in the mid-town, the police ignoring you for a little bit of money a month, and no one wants to piss the cops off by attacking you; but this is a double-edged sword, the slum gangs laughing to themselves about how much of a bitch you are to hide behind some cops.

Spoiler: Crimson Night (click to show/hide)

Player:

[10]  Tycho is peaceful world, with absolutely nothing important going on. Your boss has allowed you to recruit more than three hundred people, in fact another  regiment directly under  your command and jurisdiction.

[9] And you’re very well liked by the people here.

[1] The only issue is that your boss wants you to pay for the New Regiment itself, as well, and perhaps some of his excesses.  Your currently within your garrison house. An ill-designed building.

Spoiler: The Lost (click to show/hide)

Alexandria

[1] Your first operation on Aegis and you immediately get lost while looking around for the Financial office. The blue and white, heavily armored Watch Guard are no help to you, reluctant to inform you were exactly it is. Finally one cracks and directs you to a stately building, wherein you enter.

Dwarmin

[5] The clan wars that have started over petty land and wealth disputes have somehow drug you into this, men raiding on the inside of your border. Your watering holes and hunting places have had a number of unpleasant guests fleeing into your lands and causing trouble. The clans around you have been Fracturing, fighting amongst one another.

[2] Your slaughter of that fleeing family on the road has ignited the ire of Clan Maros. One of the larger, and more chaotic of the clans that call the ravaged landscape their home. A few raids have hit your home.

[2] A few members of clan Tavash have been found scouting within your lands as well, being executed and recycled upon discovery.

[1] Very people read the book, in fact no one does, and the movement formed around helping your captured people out is tiny, hardly noticeable.

Spoiler: Clan Aer (click to show/hide)

Azthor

[1]Unfortunately, as you’re looking over the tax incomes for Aegis and the settlements, your computer system, the one for the entire financial ministry beaks down
And it’s simply taking forever to boot back up and run maintenance on. Luckily, your mostly out of the office anyway, eating at a fancy Old Imperial Restaurant, one of the few that survived the fall of the Emperor and his house of nobles, and their subsequent execution at the hand of the Mob. The place was lucky to escape the looting and general chaos that followed before the Union was formed.

[5] As you arrive back in the ministry, you receive a note from the High President, informing you to come to a building within the lower hive for briefing upon a situation involving your ministry.

Spoiler: Financial Ministry (click to show/hide)

Caideleth frowned at the news. There were always going problems on Nai, but when two splinter clans form, it gets worse. Their timing, along with another brushfire war between some of the clans along with a colonist invasion just further pushed the dagger in.

If the Nai were to ever drive the UAS off of Nai, if they were to ever prove themselves as the rightful masters of Nai itself, they would need to present a unified front to the colonists, they would be able to push them off permanently. And from there, The NAi would have a bright future ahead of them.

Caideleth turned around and headed inside the compound. The invaders had been stopped at crater lake, some of the crews even plummeted into the lake with their vehicles into the briny depths of it. The offers from the Maros and Rasos (The two clans being united once, but split from a disagreement during the original clan's succession) were tempting, but in the end fragmenting another clan would do only harm to the cause.

Thus, the course of action decided would be to reunite the Tavash. To bring about the two splinters back unto one banner; That of the "true" Tavash clan. Caideleth walked into the barracks, dozens upon dozens of young men and women lined up at attention, ready for their first taste of battle, their ramshakle environment suits being the only thing between them and the hostile environment of Nai itself. Their rifles were crude, yet elegant, capable at firing at twelve times the rate of the heavy plasmas (It was far less impressive when it meant they only fired twelve bolts of plasma a minute). These fresh initiates would soon learn the way of the true Nai: The art of warfare.

These initiates would represent a new era for the Nai: One that was focused, disciplined and organized. A new dawn for the Nai was beginning to shine, but it would take strength and initiative to use the light it would bequeath upon them for it's intended purpose.

With that, Caideleth finished inspecting the initiates, and bellowed out an order for them, Soon, they would link up with the clan's elites, and start moving out towards the first splinter stronghold. Caideleth took his helmet and placed it upon his head. Soon, the name Tavash would strike awe and fear into the UAS, and the name Caideleth spoken only in whispers among the foes of the Nai.

Actions

1. Start recruiting the refugees into my clans forces.
2. Organize a counter raid on Clan Marcos, to test their defenses
3. Send the bodies of the Clan Tavash we killed back to their kin for proper burial. Ask them to not wander on our lands again.
4. Encourage a larger print of my autobiography and increase my cult status among the people of Aegis. Perhaps find a large publisher. Provide some information about my past to be used for embellishment.

...Dead, 12 Wounded, Cargo Bays One and Two both are both Hull breached, we lost a good percentag-

She had stood and listened to the emotionless Damage Report of her Chief Engineer Kruger, her face unmoving except for a quivering of her left eye socket, which once propably was a nervous eyelid, radiated a whole new quality of annoyance.

Kensington, get a Boarding Party together, board that ship and find out if anything wortwhile is on it. We will tug it back to Tycho.

The XO merely saluted and left the bridge in goose-step. XO Kensington was never quite able to give up his Old Navy Habits even despite the fact that when she had met him the first time he had been stupidly drunk, his parade uniform torn into rags and the pig sty around him didn't make it much better.

Kruger, repair what you can close up any Hull Breaches. I'm going to contact the Union before we end up boarded by some mad Bounty Hunters.

1.Repair as much as possible of the Ship (aka make sure at least the Hull Breaches are closed)
2.Meanwhile Send a Boarding Party to the wrecked ship and take everything worth something, then tug the ship, maybe it can be repaired or at least sold piecemeal.
3.Also, Contact the Union Authorities, make clear that i wasn't aware that i was under suspicion till i heard from it in a newscast. Ask them to suspend the Bounty and tell them that i will return as soon as i have repaired my ship since i crashed with an abandoned wreck.

The Minister of Financial Affairs calls for his head assistant before leaving for the meeting.

"Something unexpected has come up, namely, a meeting with His Excellency; reschedule the meeting with the civil counsellors for tomorrow" he sighs "not that we'd be able to get much done with that system crash. I trust you to have everything up and running by the time I've returned"
