So some resaerchers put up a test to collect data on vocabulary size. You can find it here.

So, what is your score? I did a respectable 30,000 words (man, this vocabulary get complex), putting me in the top 0,3% of my category (non-native), and in the top 20% for my age among native speakers.



P.S. Just to be clear, you don't have to fill in your data to take the test, your result will just be discarded if you don't.

I got 33,400 words. And learned a few more. (Native English speaker). I think maybe I was partially unlucky on some of the really specialized stuff...

32,900, native speaker. I retook it a few times; the vocabulary is pretty much identical each time, FJ. Probably ~70% of the words I couldn't define off-hand were still recognizable. It would be nice to have a much larger selection that randomizes each time to help account for things which are specific to certain fields of knowledge or literature.

I didn't know oneiromancy, but having looked it up, I should have been able to guess it. -mancy as in cartomancy, and onei- as in oniric.

25800, native. I feel pretty terrible about this. 

Still, most of those words just make you look like a bit of an ass if you use them just about anywhere, and their usage wouldn't be useful for fiction writing (you have to write for an audience, after all) so... I suddenly find that I really don't mind that my vocabulary isn't the largest. At least it's above the median for my age. 

Also, first time ever knowing what malapropism means was helpful outside of High School.

39,500 - putting me comfortably in the 90th percentile for my age group. That was a lot better than I initially expected, though I suspect my score was boosted as I am a bit of a sesquipedalian.
