Namely, this is a site for a game, and it colors the boards. I suspect I'd need to find similarly obscure boards for any pretense of conversation, so don't tell me to google it. Thirdly, the more you help me the less likely you are to have my dissatisfied questioning in these threads, though I'll likely be an occasional visitor. Thank you for your time and being the best board I've ever been on.

Edit: I'd like to compile a list of reliable sources on diverse subjects. I'd appreciate any you can offer.

Quarter to Three, home to the famous Let's Play of Hatoful Boyfriend, might be worth checking out. Home to many gamers but with no game focus.

The key to finding a good social network (which a forum is) is having something in common, which is what a game is good for. Have you looked into forums for, say, your favorite webcomics?

Proactive? Do you mean, like, higher posts per day?

More on the lines of a higher likelihood of their rhetoric carrying on into day to day life, and less leisurely (in terms of things like games, music, movies).

Oh, now I get it.  It's not that you think badly of us, it's that you're looking for an activist forum.  So, not just "I'm here living my life and trying to make it, with some work on a cause on the side" but "I'm living my life for this cause."

I personally hate the xkcd forums, but I think you could do well on the Serious Business board.

Well you know, Minecraft is similar to DF in some regards, just more popular. As such, I'm suuuure their forums are just as good as bay12, just with more members. You should at least give it a shot!

They've always rubbed me the wrong way.  Something buzzes and goes "These are not my people."  It reminds me of the college crowd--so reliant on discussion of science, sex, and drugs/alcohol/whatever as their mainstays, around and around.  Yes, they're more serious.  They talk about less fantastic and more "grown-up" things.  But that escapism is not my escapism, and I think that an overreliance on the absolute authority of whatever we happen to call science is dangerous.  Might be better than the opposite, seems same enough to me.  Both hurt people.

[Let's not have a flame war about that]

It can feel very into its own intellect, close-minded, aggressive, and... boring for me, I guess.  Impersonal.  I'm more interested in personal experiences and less interested in having the book thrown at me.  If you want specific data, definitely go there.  But if you want friends, I think here is better.

This forum isn't a perfect fit, obviously, but I just sort of don't feel safe there.  Don't like the way they play Mafia, either :P

That's the exact vibe I get from the comic itself, and I was wondering if it carried over. They seem far more worried about the reader knowing how smart they are to be able to make X point, without really making the point well. And people who don't "get it" are dummies.

Anyway...

As far as other forums go... well I mostly follow gaming ones to keep up with upcoming things so take this with a grain of salt. I honestly haven't seen another environment like Bay12. The only other forum that's even similar is the one for Gaslamp Games, but it's vastly reduced in activity. I got a decent vibe from the SomethingAwful forums but they require you to pay to participate, so I didn't really look that hard. That's fine to support their site, but I didn't really want to pay membership dues without free pizza and cookies.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

I personally hate the xkcd forums, but I think you could do well on the Serious Business board.

If I'm honest, which i may as well be, i like you lot, your friendly, helpful and entertaining, and there's a high quality of interesting discourse, but i have my doubts about where the line between what you can't do, reasonable amounts of leisure and what you can do looks like. I'm aware of the strained finances and long hours common here, but it doesn't speak for everyone, and it's something i put up with, not dismiss. More importantly, this is an excellent source of information and discussion, but it has limited impact outside the boards, though I have clear doubts as to whether a larger or more active board would have anything like the quality. If someone wishes to bring up the SMBC forums, please do, but much as I like the comics, i'd think it would be unappealing for much the same reasons as this.

One last thing; I'm not quite so much of a unbending idealist that i think a board without any of the above can be found. Bay12 is quite possibly one of the best examples to be had, but if there are any better, I'd welcome them.
