"Just try it. I'll soulbreak and make sure I take you with me. I'd hope to have enough time to do your friends, but seeing you dead will likely have to be enough. And no, dwarf, I'm not going to tell you that. Treason to lords is one thing, treason to countrymen is another."

Well, in that case, I guess you're going with the rest of this sorry lot. I am curious, though, what made you think that attacking us was a good idea?
Morgred, we can't sell a sack of meat and you're soul burnt anyhow. You, my friend, are a normal skeleton for the next day or so.

"Don't call them bandits" Tarana protested with a serious look on her face "We all see, that they are lawful tax collectors that made a horrible mistake and assumed that we are carrying a contraband, we made a mistake and assumed that they are bandits,  that horrible  wrong assumptions led to unfortunate bloodshed. No one to be punished. That's how I think... Demongirl grinned Or rather that's how I will think if our new mage friend will find a way to make me richer or provide some other benefit.

Ah, but you don't get it. You're a normal skeleton and talking about soulbinding, sacrifice, and other deeds - right in front of him. He points at Zoah.
So why not just leave the woman so we can sell her like any other bandit? Lawbreaker. Whatever.

"Thirty of us, five of you, you do the math. It's not as though we knew you lot were bloody adventurers, or that the legionnaire over there would start with the killing before anything else." Oh, there was some bitterness in THAT tone. Completely understandable bitterness. "Or that he was one at all, for that matter. Or the bloodthirsty one a Defiant priest."

She'd turn to the new voice and twitch her lip in something that would only faintly resemble a grin.

"That all depends on which law you think applies in this situation, now doesn't it? Duke's law, bandits. Baron's law, tax collectors. I might be able to pass you all as new members, but I see no reason why I should help you. Sure, you can threaten to kill my friends, but you have no way of knowing if I can tell my handler the truth. What's in it for us?""

She would ignore the question posed to her by Neun.

Well... Myrln ticked the options off on his fingers. I could let Morgred do what he really wants to do with you all, I could break all your limbs and leave you to die here, or a myriad of other horrible fates. I'm offering you a chance to live! And quite possibly go free without severe injuries. Plus I could attempt to torture the information out of you. It's really no difference to me. Point is, we've been hired to go take out your hirer and we have to uphold our contract. So: easy way or hard way?

"And on the other hand, we can probably get amnesty, or at least reduced punishment, for you and your friends if you cooperate with us."

"How stupid do I look? No, wait, don't answer that."

She sighed. Pretty stupid, given the situation.

"On the one hand, you threaten to sic the angelborn on the priest so he doesn't kill us, then threaten to sic the corpse on us if we don't obey. I know enough about the Decaric faith to know that he won't just sit there and let the corpse play with us for fun. Kill us? Oh yes, most certainly. But, you see, you're assuming I - we - don't expect you to kill us anyway. Try harder."

At the talk of amnesty, her lips twitched again, this time coming close to a smile.

"Now that's something I can get behind. Tell the Duke a story about how us loyal citizens accidentally took you for Barony forces, and after a tragic accident, realized the truth. If you take that option, I'll swear by my power to the gods of your choice to live a quiet, peaceful life under the Duke. I can't speak for everyone else, mind you, but I expect my friends here would prefer life over death. Though you may have to rescue some of their families. Not all of us are in it for coin, you know."

Myrln wheedles.
Weeeeell, I've never been one to kill people with legitimate grievances. We're probably going to end up burning the Baron's castle down, so we can escort any prisoners out of there if you can cooperate. This is a two way street, after all.

Lass, If you'd ask me, I'd try to hire you all to share the goods offered by the duke and turning your from Duke's enemies to Duke's allies.  Three new mages in the party can't hurt. As well as grunts. Of cause you all can betray us, but as Aphiliam teaches anyone can betray anyone. It's our duty to force others to not betray us.

"You cooperate with us, and we'll tell anything you ask of us to the Duke to try and get you that amnesty. Honestly, we probably don't even need to tell him that you and your friends were involved in "tax collection" in the first place."
