Got kind of interested in the idea in a place with NO running water from the comments earlier.  A nice twist for a challenge run would be having to breach the caverns for our water source.  The barren volcano idea would be great, or something similar.  Possibly a place with no trees as well... would be like starting a fortress on Mt. Doom.

How about you pick 2-3 nice looking embark sites from the map and put up a poll to vote on them?  Personally I'll let you do the prospecting and will be cool with whatever that isn't evil/glacier (towers are fine and Fun!)

Most of my embarks have been in heavily forested, untamed wilds, no aquifer, and metals (shallow or deep). I have tended to shy away from towers so far, as I have wanted to learn a lot of the aspects of the game before having too much fun, but I am up for a challenge. my second fort ever was without a river, and to date it was my most successful fort. The one I am doing now promises to rival it, but this one is in a much more peaceful area. It took me forever to figure out that all the ponds were stagnant water and that I needed to do something about that, for the sake of my wounded.

Bottom line - I will work with whatever comes my way, and will be quite open to suggestions on a lot of things.

Do we just select a random dwarf to be our overseer? Do we name them for ourselves? I am looking forward to this game.  :o  :-*  :-\

i thought that was pretty clear.. the starting seven are named after us. I have created the custom noble position of overseer. during our turns your dwarf becomes overseer when you appoint him there.

What starting build will be used? Depending on that, I call (er ... "request") either chief medical dwarf, or mason. I'd call militia commander, but I am skeptical of their survival rate. be a shame to have to put a corpse into the overseer position. "What's that, Ozark's rotting lower left arm? brew more booze? Yes, sir!"

Put all my points into flatterer and intimidator. I want to bully all the dwarves, but I want them feel good about themselves when I do.

I am just kidding. Don't do that.
My starting build is usually pretty standard.
Miner
Miner
Carpenter
Mason
Farmer/Brewer
WoodCutter/?
Doc/administrator or military dwarf, depending on what I feel like
throw in some points for architect, maybe mechanic, possibly plant gatherer if you think food will be an issue early on.

Similar to mine but i go for quick construction and force everyone into mining roles off the bat with DT.

anyways here are soem sites i have sampled for us:

Site 1:
Resource wise our most luxious and fits savage, possibly sandy and volcano:


Site 2:
I do not think this will be much of a challenge for us but has an extreme lack of metals


Site 3:
I think this could be our most interesting site but not much in the environment that could be worrisome


Check original post for upload of our game directory. if you guys want to suggest alternate sites i'll give you a couple days to do so or you can cast in for one of the sites above. As soon as we have a consensus on site I will start it.

On the other hand, "leastblazes" is a rather ... comforting ... name fora volcano.
