Perhaps we shouldn't delve too deep into questions like that. Dwarf Fortress inspires plenty of insanity as it is. Poke the dragon at your own risk, I always mutter to myself.

Wow.  What a turn!

Make sure you don't build the well 100 z-levels deep, as it will take a VERY long time to get the water.

do we even have to pump the water for the well? i remember hearing that all you needed was the well over the water and the z level did not matter. although this would be a good safety measure to keep a flying forgotten beast from flying up the well

You can totally have a well that deep; however when a dwarf goes to gather water the bucket has to go down each Z-level individually (I think it's the same as walking speed), then all the way back up.  Totally works as a temporary measure, but a big time waster in the long term.

You can actually watch the bucket going down and back up when a dwarf is using the well.

Oh, so, instead, what? Make a pond closer to the level of the fortress?

Hopefully Aquathug will appear soon before the turn defaults to me. If not, it might take a day or so for me to get to my desktop to run the save as my net-book would catch fire if I tried to run something so CPU intensive like DF.  ::)

I will PM Aquathug to try and get his attention.

Or a Roc, or forgotten beasts. Whatever happened to those vampire fellows? They could have come in handy.
