here's the workaround thread mentioned earlier; http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=93969.0

Ahh, thanks! This is what I need.

Although I am confused as hell.

The first post looks straightfoward and it claims to work.

But later in the thread someone posted something super confusing involving miners "claiming" picks, and also forbidding the picks.

Whaaat?

Ah, that is possible, yes.

So what does happen exactly if I have miners with armour on and then I remove them from their squad? They dump the armour?
They'll drop their armor if you take them out of the squad or if they go off duty.  They may only drop their gear if they have a dig job, I'm not sure.
In my experience, it's re-enabling their Mining labor that tells them they can't be a soldier anymore. As long as Mining is turned off, they'll happily chill out in full plate + pick, permanently.

But man, it's annoying that the 3 professions that are most likely to draw dwarves away from the safety of the fort (Mining, Woodcutting, Hunting) are the only 3 professions that outlaw all forms of armor. Well, I guess Plant Gathering makes them roam too, but how often do you use that?

Yeah, it is most frustrating.  I tried running a fort where almost every dwarf was also a soldier.  I had about 70 soldiers in that fort's prime and curb stomped every invasion with a large amount of satisifaction.

I had to send escorts with the stupid wood cutters though, because if I didn't I had casualties almost every time from ambushers.   ::)

To simplify this: Never mix Hunter, Wood Cutter and Miner with anything military. If you want those dwarves to become soldier, disable their labour first and wait for them to drop off their gear. Shouldn't be long.

Mining Picks make for really, really good weapons and they are controlled by the Mining skill. However, those soldiers will not have other combat relevant skills, so they will need some training.

In other words, for the Picks of Slaying squad, you should:
- Mine out the map for a Legendary Miner
- Disable his mining labour. Watch him drop his pick.
- Recruit him into a military squad. Assign Pick (foreign) as a weapon, or assign a specific weapon if need be.
- Give him opportunity to train properly (from a skilled teacher), organically (on captives or the front lines) or artifically (in a danger room)
- Watch him kill everything.

Alas that rather misses the point of what I'm trying to achieve. I want miners that don't die. Not super soldiers. I will be making cannon squads and zweihander greatsword legions for that.

I'm hoping the walkaround with choosing specific weapons will work.

Seems that in my current version of the game (with masterwork) it actually shows what weapons people already picked up in red, so you don't end up with problems assigning the wrong weapon to multiple people.

Notes: The material and quality of picks (and axes) are totally irrelevant for actual mining (and woodcutting), but are crucial when they're being used as actual weapons. Distribute your -copper picks- and ☼steel picks☼ accordingly.

At first, a Miner->Warrior is essentially a naked baby with a machine gun. So armor that baby!!!

Physical stats seem to be largely neglibile, when you're a steel-plated ninja with a lightsaber. I made my duke into a Miner->Warrior, and his stats were "He is rarely sick, but he is flimsy." The very first time he did any military service whatsoever was when I sent him out of the fort (wearing masterwork steel everything) to draw some of the ambushing goblins away from the gates, so that the merchants could safely exit. The dude took on 5 ambush parties singlehanded (including 2 groups at once), got 16 kills, and suffered only 3 bruises. And then I savescummed, because I'm not going to have a duke with the battle title "the Cuddly Squirting of Boats."

Well, I tried the aforementioned workaround.

It has half worked.

I have a bunch of well equipped armoured miners with the specific picks I assigned them.

However, the other half of the squad is nearly naked, with no picks.

There are picks in the stockpile that have been individually assigned to them. What the hell are these little dwarven morons doing!?

I even saw a couple of them go into the stockpile and DROP OFF their picks.
